Network lifetime enhancement of WSNs using correlation model and node selection algorithm

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy efficiency is the key concern. The clustering of networks is one of the most common strategies to make WSNs energy efficient. In clustering, the nodes are assembled into some virtual clusters and leaders are identified for each cluster called cluster-heads. The normal nodes send their sensed data to the cluster head, then, the cluster head transmits it to the base station after the data aggregation. In most of the developed clustering strategies, the spatial correlation has not been used to filter sensors. Thus in this paper, a correlation model is formulated to filter the sensor nodes on the grounds of the correlation value before engaging in the clustering phase. This correlation model is employed to divide the network into correlated regions. The region where multiple sensors possess an identical copy of event data because of close spatial proximity is known as a correlated region. To pick out a couple of sensors from every correlated region a node selection algorithm is proposed. The selected sensor nodes further engage in the clustering process and remaining nodes switch to sleep mode. This paper also presents a Fuzzy-based distributed cluster technique. The results are compared to familiar CHEF and LEACH techniques. A study is conducted to show the impact of the correlation threshold value on the lifetime of the network and found that the lifespan of the network may be extended by changing the correlation threshold.

Localization technologies in wireless sensor networks have been suffering from great energy consumption problem due to the energy-constrained characteristic of the networks. Existing power allocating solutions are mostly distributed for the lack of global network knowledge. In this paper, we investigate localization algorithm with the support of software-defined network (SDN) technique and propose a localization node selection algorithm based on the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). By making use of the global network knowledge provided by the SDN controller, we formulate the issues into a 0-1 programming problem on the premise of energy satisfaction. Simulation results show that significant improvement in localization performance can be achieved with our proposed SDN based algorithm.

Each sensor node in wireless sensor network(WSN) uses only a single microphone instead of microphone arrays as its sensing device, which can guarantee the most important characteristics of WSN, such as small size, low power consumption and convenient deployment. In this paper, weighted linear least squares method(WLLS) was proposed to realize target localization. By dividing the localization equations and introducing new parameters, the localization problem is linearized and computational complexity is reduced. Then the most influencing factors on localization accuracy were analyzed, including the source position, background noise, sensing range, attenuation coefficient and node location error, which will provide an effective instruction on WASN design and nodes selection.

Visual sensor networks offer surveillance applications, particularly object tracking. This study proposed an angle converge algorithm for mobile object to cover all angles of a mobile object in wireless camera sensor networks. This algorithm mainly applies to a security monitor system that can detect the object tracks and need to catch the 360 degrees images of mobile object. This study designs a node selection algorithm to find a set of coverage nodes. The field of views of coverage nodes can cover all angles of mobile object. When the object moves, the set of coverage nodes has to update to maintain full coverage angle. We have to select the minimum number of nodes to cover full coverage angle. The wireless camera sensor network is random deployed in the monitor area environment. Each sensor node has rotational camera lens, and each camera can rotate 360 degrees. When a node detects a mobile object in the monitor area, it starts the tracking task and selects a set of coverage nodes to cover the mobile object. The field of view of camera is turned to follow the tracks of object. The mobile object is monitored by the proposed algorithm.

In cognitive radio (CR) networks, the cooperative spectrum sensing can greatly improve the sensing performance. However, several existing cooperative spectrum sensing methods have time asynchronization assumption, which will inevitably bring the waste of waiting time, and will cause many limitations in the practical application. In this paper, we propose an enhanced asynchronous cooperative spectrum sensing framework based on the Dempster-Shafer (D-S) theory. Within such a framework, each SU calculates the trust functions with the double threshold spectrum sensing method, which improves the reliability of the local sensing results. In fusion center (FC), it uses the sliding-window method to ensure the real-time performance and the asynchronism of the fusion data. In addition, to reduce the amount of data fusion in FC, we propose a node selection algorithm using the correlations of trust functions. Our analysis and simulation results show that this method can reduce the number of sensing nodes remarkably and improve the spectrum sensing efficiency significantly.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are networks that have no centralized body and in order to communicate with the nodes it has no fixed topology. Also it is difficult to find the route from source to destination in MANETs, because of its arbitrary mobility of nodes and in general MANETs works on multihop environment to select a route from source to destination. For this a new scheme has been proposed that results in an efficient and reliable path named as Efficient Power Saving Adaptive Routing (EPSAR). In this paper we would apply some amendments to FRENSA and make a new algorithm that could make it more efficient and reliable enough and also apply it to three different scenarios like Best, Average and Worst case for selecting a path and can check the performance of the network and the complexity of selected route. In all the cases we would take some parameters that have been used in EPSAR and analyze the performance of this algorithm in all the cases.

In Wireless Sensor Networks, nodes assist each other by passing data and control packets from one node to another. In a complex WSN, malicious nodes are well disguised so that they can purposely attack the whole network using the natural co-operations of sensors. To overcome this, we study trust mechanism in the human society and introduce it into a WSN. We also construct a cross-layer trust model based on cloud theory in accordance with the characteristics of a WSN. Based on trust model, we propose a node selection algorithm for wireless sensor networks. The experiment results show that our algorithm can improve the system security and performance of wireless sensor networks, and efficiently defend against the attacks of malicious nodes.
