We study the following discrete facility location game. Two players, a leader and a follower, open facilities and compete to attract clients from a given market. Each player has a budget and maximizes own market share. Each client splits own demand probabilistically over all opened facilities by the gravity rule. The goal is to find the location and design of the leader facilities to maximize his market share. We present an alternating heuristic and exact method for this game. We rewrite the problem as mixed integer linear program with exponential number of constraints. In our method, we start with small subset of constraints and iteratively enlarge it until upper and lower bounds not coincide. Computational results are discussed.

In the era of modern computing based environment, the process of design is conceptualized, implemented and tested in a close loop integrating different modules of design, manufacturing and usages. In this regard, this paper presents a computing based design model for the design of a 'Pneumatic Driven Variable Buoyancy System (PDVBS)' for 'Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)'. The presented design model is modular in architecture and integrates the design of PDVBS with design of AUV. The design approach is derived from the basic and advanced principles of mechanics and the approach is defined in the 'Computer Aided Design (CAD)' model in terms of different modules with implementation in Matlab. Finally, we present a design example of a PDVBS for depth rating up to 4200 m with application focused on a large AUV of length 7 m to show the efficiency and applicability of our proposed design model.

Integrated planning for product selection, shelf-space allocation, and replenishment decision with elasticity and positioning effects

As the retail industry is growing larger and more diversified, retailers' decisions about product selection, shelf space-allocation, and replenishment become more important and challenging. This paper is to present a model for shelf-space allocation with product selection and replenishment decisions to maximize the retailer's profit. The model is based on a two-dimensional display space in which all shelves and products have widths and heights and includes factors that influence demand for each product, such as space and cross-space elasticities and positioning effects. The integrated model presented is mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) because the demand function is non-convex. This research proposes two heuristic algorithms (tabu search and genetic) to solve the MINLP problem. The results show the effectiveness and efficiency of these algorithms by comparing the outputs to the MINLP optimal solution for small data sets and comparing the algorithm performances for large data sets. The solution methodologies expect to support a simultaneous decision-making process for retailers to maximize their revenue.

A lexicographic approach for solving bi-criteria bottleneck assignment problems

The suitability of agents for tasks and ranked preference of tasks for agents play a significant role in problems where several agents are available to perform various tasks. The agents should be allocated to various tasks so that the corresponding assignment schedules must provide solution points on the Pareto front in the criteria space of the problem. This study discusses a bi-objective assignment problem of this kind, related to positioning players in a sports ground, and an algorithm based on a lexicographic technique is developed to solve this problem. The two objectives of the problem are to maximize the minimum suitability of players among positions and to minimize the maximum rank of positions among players, simultaneously. The proposed algorithm efficiently finds all the Pareto-optimal/non-dominated assignment schedules and hence, the solution points of the problem. This is an improved algorithm than the one available in the literature for this problem. A numerical example demonstrates the applicability of the proposed algorithm and shows less computational complexity than an existing algorithm. © 2024 The Author(s)

A look at two underutilized methods for optimum structural design

The paper presents a closer examination of two infrequently used optimization algorithms, in relation to their applicability in large-scale structural synthesis. The geometric programming approach and the Gauss constrained method are recognized as extremely efficient solution strategies. The former approach reduces the solution of a nonlinearly constrained problem to one with strictly linear constraints, and, under special conditions, to a solution of linear algebraic equations. The Gauss constrained method provides a robust approach for optimum design that does not require a step-size determination, and is thus useful in problems where functional evaluations are computationally demanding. An efficient implementation of these methods for structural synthesis can be attained by a recourse to well-documented approximation concepts. © 1987, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Rigorous NLP distillation models for simultaneous optimization to reduce utility and capital costs

Two non-linear programming (NLP) models with rigorous stage-by-stage MESH calculations are proposed based on the concept of bypass efficiency. The models can be used to simultaneously optimize the number of stages, feed stage location and operating parameters such as the reflux ratio and column pressure. They can also be used for simultaneous flowsheet optimization with distillation columns and heat integration, as demonstrated in a case study. The first model removes an over-specification where the enthalpy of the outlet stream is calculated using an equation-of-state. A degrees of freedom (DOF) analysis shows that the calculation is not required since the enthalpy of the outlet stream is computed from the inlet stream and equilibrium stream and the outlet temperature does not need to be known for subsequent stage calculations. The second model reduces the number of free variables by grouping the bypass efficiencies in a systematic manner. This modification reduces the model size and solution time without sacrificing accuracy or the number of unique solutions. Other than that, the pressure drop equations were improved. The improvement proved to be significant as the original equations caused all stages to be active in a case study, while the same problem was not observed with the new set of pressure drop constraints. Both proposed models had shorter solution times, smaller model size and they yielded minimized objective values 1.5-5.4% lower compared to the original bypass efficiency model.

Short-term operation is one of the most significant aspects of power systems operation and planning and it mainly includes resource scheduling including renewable and non-renewable energy sources. The mentioned problem is modeled as an optimization problem with one or more objectives depending upon the priorities of the decision maker (system operator) and several equality and inequality constraints. In this respect, this paper proposes a short-term operational model for the hydrothermal power systems in the presence of wind power generation and pumped-hydro storage (PHS) units. The problem is formulated as a single-objective optimization problem that aims to minimize the total operating cost including the fuel cost of thermal units. The problem has been comprehensively investigated through five case studies where the first case study is used for the sake of validation. Then, the other case studies assessed the impacts of wind power generation, PHS unit, and uncertainty on the problem. The five case studies are as follows: Case 1: Short-term hydrothermal (STH) scheduling which aims to minimize the total cost. Case 2: Deterministic short-term hydrothermal-wind (STHTW) scheduling which aims to minimize the total cost. Case 3: Stochastic wind-hydro-thermal scheduling that seeks to minimize the total cost taking into consideration the uncertainty of the wind power generation. Case 4: Deterministic wind-hydro-thermal scheduling in the presence of the PHS unit with the total cost minimization as the objective function. Case 5: Stochastic wind-hydro-thermal scheduling in the presence of the PHS unit that is used to evaluate the impact of uncertainty of wind power generation with the total cost minimization as the objective function. It is noteworthy that the first three case studies have been formulated using a non-linear programming (NLP) model and solved using the CONOPT solver in GAMS. The paper presents approximate analytical solutions of the problem of finding the shape of a plane convex figure that encloses the least area but whose torsion constant and the least second moment of area about any centroidal axis are not less than certain prescribed values. Simonsen and the early history of the cash\in-advance approach

The paper brings to light an early contribution to the cash-in-advance literature made by the Brazilian economist Mario Henrique Simonsen (1935–1997) in an article written in Portuguese as far back as 1964. Simonsen explicitly introduced the cash-in-advance constraint as an inequality in a non-linear programming problem and provided a diagrammatic illustration of the interior and boundary solutions. He also applied the concept to the discussion of the quantity theory of money and showed that the classical dichotomy is valid for the stationary equilibrium of prices over time. © 2002, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

A decision-making model of bank's asset combination based on multi-period dynamic optimization

Considering the constrain on VaR, laws, regulations and operation, using combination profits maximum of bank as objective function, applying the backward induction idea of multi - period assets allocation and linear programming method, the dynamic optimization model of bank asset combination is set up. There are some characteristics and innovations in this paper. The characteristics lie on four aspects. Firstly, by using backward induction method, the combination of this period is set up based on the combination of the next period. And then such problems as the neglect or lack consideration of the interaction of each period can be solved. Secondly, it is taken into account that the earning rate of this period will be affected by loan credit migration of the former period. Then in this study the earning rates of different levels and the probability of risk migration for one year are used to obtain the earning rates of every corporation each year and mean square deviations. It can objectively reflect the actual combination and risk. As a result, the neglect of the earning rates is avoided. Finally, the combination risk of multi-period loan is controlled by the introduction of VaR constrain. Then the lack consideration of the bank's risk tolerance ability and the demand of capital intendance in present multi-period study are avoided.
