Resolving combined wave-current fields from measurements using interior point optimization

Complex wave and wave-current conditions exist in the natural world, and are increasingly emulated in advanced experimental facilities to de-risk the deployment, operation and maintenance of offshore structures and renewable energy devices. This can include combinations of ocean swell, multi-directional wind-driven seas, and reflected wave conditions interacting with a current field. It is vital to understand the full nature of these potentially hazardous conditions so they can be properly simulated in numerical models, to contextualize measurements made in field, and experimental programmes. Here, a numerical framework is presented for isolating both the wave systems and the mean current velocities from measured data using an interior point optimizer. A developed frequency domain solver is used to resolve, from experimentally obtained wave gauge measurements, two opposing wave systems on a collinear current, and used to effectively isolate the wave systems and predict the current velocity using only wave gauge measurements. Thirty five test cases are considered;consisting of five wave spectra interacting with seven different current velocities ranging from -0.3ms(-1)10.3m s(-1). Comparisons between the theoretical and derived wave numbers and current velocities show good agreement and the performance of the method is similar to that of existing methodologies while requiring no a priori knowledge of the current velocity impacting the wave field required. Although results are presented for the collinear problem, the presented method can be applied to a wide range of wave and current combinations, and provides a useful tool for increasing understanding of both ocean and experimental conditions.

Real-Time Cooperative Adaptive Robust Relay Beamforming Based on Kalman Filtering Channel Estimation

In this paper, an adaptive channel estimation algorithm is proposed for the multi-user robust relay beamforming problem. We propose a norm-bounded channel uncertainty model for all of the channels. We employ the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) for joint estimation of channel coefficients and beamforming weights, and propose a Markov model for source-relay and relay-destination channels as well as the beamforming weights in the relays. The channel coefficients and bemforming weights are shown to be well-estimated in order to minimize the total relays power transmission subject to worst-case signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) criterion at each receiver. As the main contribution of this paper, we propose an adaptive method for simultaneous estimation of the beamforming weights and channel states information, and solving the associated optimization problem by estimation tools. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm outperforms the interior point based methods for non-linear optimization. In comparison to our recent work, a sub-optimal solution to the non-convex robust relay beamforming problem was provided, the proposed method has superior performance and lower complexity.

To expand or not to expand: A strategic analysis of the recycler's waste treatment capacity

This study aims to investigate the recycler's profits and associated environmental impacts of construction and demolition waste (CDW) recycling under two waste treatment capacity expansion strategies, which primarily consider the mismatch between demand and supply in CDW recycling market. Through developing and comparing non-linear programming models in two waste recycling market scenarios, we find that in both scenarios, no matter how much the initial waste treatment capacity, a waste recycling capacity-glut strategy can be always optimal from the recycler's perspective. However, the recycler may not expand its waste treatment capacity when the initial waste treatment capacity is medium or high. Instead of decreasing its waste treatment fee, the recycler would set a constant waste treatment fee for profit attainment when the initial waste treatment capacity is high. Furthermore, although the government and the recycler commonly have conflicting objectives in CDW recycling, a win-win situation where both the recycler and the government prefer the same strategy can be achieved when the initial waste treatment capacity is low or moderate. This study not only offers new insights into understanding the recyclers' capacity expansion strategies, but also provides valuable implications for related policy development.

This paper addresses the problem of allocating the terminal nodes to the hub nodes in a telecommunication network. Since the flow processing induces some undesirable delay, the objective is to minimize the total flow processed by the hubs. This study focuses on a real life network of the tunisian operator Tunisie Telecom whose operations managers are concerned by the quality of service. We provide three compact formulations that give optimal solutions for networks of large size. In particular, the last two are obtained by applying the Reformulation-linearization Technique to a nonlinear formulation of the problem. The latter formulation derived within this approach is the most computationally effective, as pointed out by the computational experiments conducted on the real life network of Tunisie Telecom with 110 nodes and 5 hubs. Finally, we discuss and compare between the single allocation and double allocation configurations.

OPTIMIZATION OF SHIP SPEED AND FLEET DEPLOYMENT UNDER CARBON EMISSIONS POLICIES FOR CONTAINER SHIPPING

In this paper, under the consideration of two carbon emissions policies, the issues of optimizing ship speed and fleet deployment for container shipping were addressed. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming model of ship speed and fleet deployment was established with the objective of minimising total weekly operating costs. A simulated annealing algorithm was proposed to solve the problem. An empirical analysis was conducted with the data selected from the benchmark suite. The applicability and effectiveness of the established model and its algorithm are verified by the results. According to the results, two policies of the cap-and-trade programme and the carbon tax can better optimize the results of the ship speed and fleet deployment problem to achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions. The research remarks in this paper will provide a solution for container shipping companies to make optimized decisions under carbon emissions policies.

RECYCLING OF LIFETIME DEPENDENT DETERIORATED PRODUCTS THROUGH DIFFERENT SUPPLY CHAINS

Conservation of natural resources in order to protect the environment, support the economy, and offer a better life to living beings has become an urgent need of modern business so that future generations can survive within available resources and in a healthy environment. Recycling of used products plays an important role in the conservation of natural resources and the development of sustainable business for deteriorating products because the number of these items increases with time, which creates economic loss and environmental pollution. This paper considers the production and cycle time as decision variables to design a forward and reverse supply chain system that produces two different types of products, which are subject to deterioration. Rate of deterioration is time-varying and depends on the maximum lifetime of products. Used products of a forward supply chain are collected and treated as raw materials in a reverse supply chain to produce other products. The system involves three types of inventory stocks, i.e., product 1, 2, and returned inventory. The objective of this research is to minimize total cost per unit time for two types of systems, one in which products of both the supply chains deteriorate and the second in which the products of the first supply chain deteriorate. Kuhn-Tucker method is employed to solve the model and a solution algorithm is proposed to obtain optimal solution. Application of the model is supported with numerical examples and sensitivity analysis. Some managerial insights are provided to help managers while applying the proposed models in real situations. Results of numerical experiments suggest for deteriorating products to plan short replenishment cycles of inventory.

Determination of an efficient variables sampling system based on the Taguchi process capability index

Process capability indices are the important tools used in most of the manufacturing industries to check whether the manufactured products meet their quality specifications or not. These indices are the numerical measures used to judge the precision, accuracy, and performance of the manufacturing process. Acceptance sampling plan is another important tool used to check the quality of procured products. So, the sampling plan with combination of process capability indices will be a powerful tool for improving and maintaining the quality of products. In this paper, we propose a variables sampling system based on one of the most efficient process capability indices called Taguchi capability index. The proposed system can be applied when the quality characteristic under investigation has double specification limits and follows a normal distribution. Advantages of the proposed sampling system over the existing sampling plans are also discussed. Tables are also constructed to determine the optimal parameters by formulating the problem as a non-linear programming in which the average sample number is minimised by satisfying the producer and consumer risks simultaneously. A sensitivity analysis is provided in order to show the efficiency of the proposed sampling system.

As the retail industry is growing larger and more diversified, retailers' decisions about product selection, shelf space-allocation, and replenishment become more important and challenging. This paper is to present a model for shelf-space allocation with product selection and replenishment decisions to maximize the retailer's profit. The model is based on a two-dimensional display space in which all shelves and products have widths and heights and includes factors that influence demand for each product, such as space and cross-space elasticities and positioning effects. The integrated model presented is mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) because the demand function is non-convex. This research proposes two heuristic algorithms (tabu search and genetic) to solve the MINLP problem. The results show the effectiveness and efficiency of these algorithms by comparing the outputs to the MINLP optimal solution for small data sets and comparing the algorithm performances for large data sets. The solution methodologies expect to support a simultaneous decision-making process for retailers to maximize their revenue.

Design and optimization of a novel system for trigeneration

Subcooled compressed air energy storage (SCAES) is a system cogenerating heat, cooling, and power at a high coefficient of performance. In this study, hybridization of a SCAES system with a large-scale solar powered absorption chiller (SPAC) is proposed. The hybrid system sustainably provides cooling and power at high efficiency. The combined SPAC-SCAES system is appropriate for locations with large cooling demand and grid-connected renewable power plants. Employing this system, the renewable power plant may efficiently operate in the power market, maximizing the financial benefits by storing its surplus power and reclaiming the stored energy for balancing the demand and the production. In addition, a large amount of cold is produced, increasing the profitability of the system. This combined system is designed and simulated for a typical wind farm plus an absorption chiller of a hospital. nonlinear programming (NLP) is used to optimize the operation strategy of the SCAES and based on the given results;the components of the system are sized. The results show that by the combined system a massive amount of balancing power can be produced for the grid, a reliable integration between the cold and electricity sectors is made, and the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) decreases remarkably. A non-linear programming-based similarity reasoning scheme for modelling of monotonicity-preserving multi-input fuzzy inference systems

In this paper, the zero-order Sugeno Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) that preserves the monotonicity property is studied. The sufficient conditions for the zero-order Sugeno FIS model to satisfy the monotonicity property are exploited as a set of useful governing equations to facilitate the FIS modelling process. The sufficient conditions suggest a fuzzy partition (at the rule antecedent part) and a monotonically-ordered rule base (at the rule consequent part) that can preserve the monotonicity property. The investigation focuses on the use of two Similarity Reasoning (SR)-based methods, i.e., Analogical Reasoning (AR) and Fuzzy Rule Interpolation (FRI), to deduce each conclusion separately. It is shown that AR and FRI may not be a direct solution to modelling of a multi-input FIS model that fulfils the monotonicity property, owing to the difficulty in getting a set of monotonically-ordered conclusions. As such, a non-linear programming (NLP)-based SR scheme for constructing a monotonicity-preserving multi-input FIS model is proposed. In the proposed scheme, AR or FRI is first used to predict the rule conclusion of each observation. Then, a search algorithm is adopted to look for a set of consequents with minimized root means square errors as compared with the predicted conclusions. A constraint imposed by the sufficient conditions is also included in the search process. Applicability of the proposed scheme to undertaking fuzzy Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) tasks is demonstrated. The results indicate that the proposed NLP-based SR scheme is useful for preserving the monotonicity property for building a multi-input FIS model with an incomplete rule base.
