The texture and color properties of surimi gels consisting of pollack surimi, golden threadfin-bream surimi, and low-grade hairtail surimi in various ratios were determined based on a mixture design. Surimi gels were produced by heating at 90 degreesC for 20 min with the addition of 2% NaCl. The texture and color properties of blended surimi from various grades can be represented as non-linear functions. Therefore, non-linear programming was found to be appropriate for determining the optimum formulation for surimi products blended from various grades of surimi. About 3.3% to 18.8% of hairtail surimi could be used when blending with high-grade surimi to produce surimi seafood.

This paper presents a new real-time robot path planning approach which, to our best knowledge, is the first one in the robotic community. Motivated by the practical requirements of obstacle representation. A generalized semi-infinite optimization problem (GSOP) with not only intersection but also union operations was proposed and a mathematical solution to it was developed. This paper inherits the fundamental ideas of inequality and optimization techniques from the previous work and converts the real-time obstacle avoidance problem into a semi-infinite constrained optimization problem with the help of a delicate mathematical transformation. This leads to an efficient method for the real-time obstacle avoidance. Simulation results in 3D space have been presented to show its merits.

The goodwill and time to introduce a new product in a market are the decision variables of a non-linear programming problem. Assuming an underlying goodwill dynamics derived from the Nerlove-Arrow’s model, we are faced with an objective function which is not differentiable over all the feasible set. After decomposing the problem into two differentiable non-linear programming problems we suggest a simple algorithm to solve it. A numerical analysis of the problems related with three different utility functions concludes the paper.

This paper proposes the software package SISCON, dedicated to the evaluation of optimal decisions for large scale systems. SISCON firstly evaluates mathematical models developed from experimental data using LS methods for linear and nonlinear systems and after that computes the optimal decision problems, solving the mathematical non-linear programming problems. The large scale systems have generally a complex structure and global approach computation cannot be carried out. The authors present a decentralised decision structure having a well-defined distribution of supervisory functions. After decomposition of large – scale problems is carried out, sub problems are solved using standard optimization techniques. SISCON offers opportunities for solving non-linear mathematical programming problems and for evaluating optimal decisions in large scale systems control.

The paper contributes to the use of social choice and welfare theory in health economics by developing and applying the integration of claims framework to health-care rationing. Related to Sen's critique of neo-classical welfare economics, the integration of claims framework recognises three primitive sources of claim: consequences, deontology and procedures. A taxonomy is presented with the aid of which it is shown that social welfare functions reflecting these claims individually or together, can be specified. Some of the resulting social choice rules can be regarded as generalisations of health-maximisation and all have normative justifications, though the justifications may not be universally acceptable. The paper shows how non-linear programming can be used to operationalise such choice rules and illustrates their differential impacts on the optimal provision of health-care. Following discussion of relations to the capabilities framework and the context in which rationing occurs, the paper concludes that the integration of claims provides a viable framework for modelling health-care rationing that is technically rigorous, general and tractable, as well as being consistent with relevant moral considerations and citizen preferences. Most existing linearprogramming (LP) models have optimization objectives that are very different from Fisher's linear discriminant function (FLDF). An LP technique that adapts to FLDF to solve the two-group classification problem is desirable, as FLDF is one of the most popular classification rules. Therefore, this paper introduces a piecewise linearprogramming (PLP-p) approach that has an optimization objective very similar to that of FLDF to solve the two-group classification problem in discriminant analysis. Moreover, the paper compares the classificatory performance between FLDF and the new PLP-p model, and shows that the results from both approaches are as good as each other when applied to three published data sets. However, the new PLP-p is more flexible than FLDF in terms of adding different types of constraints and weighting individual observations. The non-linear programming problem associated with the discrete lower bound limit analysis problem is treated by means of an algorithm where the need to linearize the yield criteria is avoided. The algorithm is an interior point method and is completely general in the sense that no particular finite element discretization or yield criterion is required. As with interior point methods for linearprogramming the number of iterations is affected only little by the problem size. Some practical implementation issues are discussed with reference to the special structure of the common lower bound load optimization problem. and finally the efficiency and accuracy of the method is demonstrated by means of examples of plate and slab structures obeying different non-linear yield criteria. This article presents a methodology and new technique for residential land planning for low-income groups. Several unit design modules for the residential area are suggested and a cost optimization model for obtaining the optimum physical design of one module satisfying the geometric, density, and other constraints has been formulated as a non-linear programming problem. The solution came through a relatively simplified Focus Search and Monte-Carlo Simulation techniques. A second model for the optimal design of the dwelling-layout has been developed with an objective function of maximization of lot dimensions and satisfying some constraints, most important of which is the affordability for low-income groups. The optimum design, based on this model, came by using the relatively simple computer-based Focus Search technique. A practical application of the two models for Syria is illustrated by an example about obtaining a residential neighborhood from several planning modules combined together. A case study revealed how a planner, can achieve directly the desired feasible and optimal design solutions, depending on these new planning techniques. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
