Balancing, sequencing, and job rotation scheduling of a U-shaped lean cell with dynamic operator performance

Performance of a manufacturing cell is dependent on an efficient layout design, and optimal work schedules. However, the operator-dependent factors such as learning, forgetting, motivation, and boredom, can considerably impact the output of the system. In this study, we consider heterogeneous operators with dynamic performance metrics and integrate the job assignment, and job rotation scheduling problems, with the balancing and production sequencing in a U-shaped lean manufacturing cell. We present a novel multi-period nonlinear mixed-integer model to minimize the deviations from takt time, and the number of operators, in a finite planning horizon. An efficient meta-heuristic approach is developed to solve the problem and the results are compared to a static case where no human factor is included. Our computational results demonstrate that including the operator-dependent metrics can improve the performance of the cell design. We conduct a sensitivity analysis of the scheduling parameters including, rotation frequencies, takt time, cell size, and task types, and derive that the obtained solutions with the static settings, are not sufficient for an efficient lean cell design in the presence of dynamic human factors.

Optimizing pricing and location decisions for competitive service facilities charging uniform price

In this paper, we present the problem of optimizing the location and pricing for a set of new service facilities entering a competitive marketplace. We assume that the new facilities must charge the same (uniform) price and the objective is to optimize the overall profit for the new facilities. Demand for service is assumed to be concentrated at discrete demand points (customer markets);customers in each market patronize the facility providing the highest utility. Customer demand function is assumed to be elastic;the demand is affected by the price, facility attractiveness, and the travel cost for the highest-utility facility. We provide both structural and algorithmic results, as well as some managerial insights for this problem. We show that the optimal price can be selected from a certain finite set of values that can be computed in advance;this fact is used to develop an efficient mathematical programming formulation for our model.

integer variables allow the treatment of some portfolio optimization problems in a more realistic way and introduce the possibility of adding some natural features to the model. We propose an algebraic approach to maximize the expected return under a given admissible level of risk measured by the covariance matrix. To reach an optimal portfolio it is an essential ingredient the computation of different test sets (via Grobner basis) of linear subproblems that are used in a dual search strategy. Hub-and-spoke network design with congestion

We consider a hub-and-spoke network design problem with congestion. The model we propose extends current models by taking congestion effects into account. This is achieved through a non-linear cost term in the objective function. We first linearize the model, and then provide a Lagrangean heuristic that finds high-quality solutions within reasonable computational time. The results of the model provide new and realistic insights into the hub-and-spoke network design problem. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

This paper presents comprehensive decision-making procedures for designing a new toll plaza with the right initial capacity, then finding the optimal dynamic lane configuration for operations. evaluating the effects of increasing future traffic volume on waiting time by sensitivity analysis, and establishing along-term quantitative strategy by transferring low-throughput lane users to high-throughput lanes. We develop a non-linear integer programming model integrated with the M/G/1 queueing process. A case study based on actual data demonstrates how effective the model and the strategy are in reducing operating and user-waiting costs and, thus, improving overall system performance at toll plazas. A model is developed for allocating information files required in common by several computers. The model considers storage cost, transmission cost, file lengths, and request rates, as well as updating rates of files, the maximum allowable expected access times to files at each computer, and the storage capacity of each computer. The criterion of optimality is minimal overall operating costs (storage and transmission). The model is formulated into a nonlinear integer zero-one programming problem, which may be reduced to a linear zero-one programming problem. A simple example is given to illustrate the model.

A need for time-compressed, low credit hour, problem-based courses for upper division students frequently arises. These courses may be used to support universities' honors program by extending the learning mastery of traditional subjects through experiential learning and challenging the exceptional student. In addition, such courses can facilitate and allow some students to graduate on schedule. Although short, problem-based courses with low enrollment (25 students) do not map conveniently to the traditional teaching schedule of faculty, they can provide a unique opportunity for service both to students and to the university, especially in summer semesters. In addition, the National Academy of Engineering has recognized experiential learning which involves solving open-ended problems that are complex and ill structured as a critical competency for engineers in the 21st century. This paper describes the design of a special problem course in which we use the case method to teach industrial engineering technology students nonlinear integer programming, while providing a collaborative learning experience in solving a simulated real world problem. The basic problem uses nonlinear integer programming to explore the optimization space for optical fiber ribbon-based cables, which are subject to a variety of practical constraints. Students learn to use the LINGO software package to maximize the fiber packing density for a number of exemplary cable configurations. Students also learn a variety of skills and acquire an intuitive understanding of optimization algorithms. The problem complexity and the scope of the course can be adjusted to serve the needs and abilities of the students. End-of-course deliverables include a formal engineering report and the preparation and presentation of a poster paper. The special problem course provides students with a collaborative learning experience solving an ill-structured practical problem and it provides faculty a unique service opportu

Supplier selection is a multi-criteria decision making problem which includes both qualitative and quantitative factors. In order to select the best suppliers,it is necessary to make a trade-off between these tangible and intangible factors some of which may conflict. When business volume discounts exist,this problem becomes more complicated, in these circumstances,buyer should decide about two problems:which suppliers are the best and how much should be purchased from each selected supplier. In this article an integration of analytical hierarchy process and non-linear integer and multi-objective programming under some constraints is applied to determine the best suppliers and to place the optimal order quantities among them. This integration-based multi-criteria decision making methodology takes into account both qualitative and quantitative factors in supplier selection. While the analytical hierarchy process matches item characteristics with supplier characteristics,non-linear integer programming model analytically determines the best suppliers and the optimal order quantities among the determined suppliers. A practical case study illustrates its efficiency and effectiveness.

Integrated modelling of cost-effective siting and operation of flow-control infrastructure for river ecosystem conservation

Wetland and floodplain ecosystems along many regulated rivers are highly stressed, primarily due to a lack of environmental flows of appropriate magnitude, frequency, duration, and timing to support ecological functions. In the absence of increased environmental flows, the ecological health of river ecosystems can be enhanced by the operation of existing and new flow-control infrastructure (weirs and regulators) to return more natural environmental flow regimes to specific areas. However, determining the optimal investment and operation strategies over time is a complex task due to several factors including the multiple environmental values attached to wetlands, spatial and temporal heterogeneity and dependencies, nonlinearity, and time-dependent decisions. This makes for a very large number of decision variables over a long planning horizon. The focus of this paper is the development of a nonlinear integer programming model that accommodates these complexities. The mathematical objective aims to return the natural flow regime of key components of river ecosystems in terms of flood timing, flood duration, and interflood period. We applied a 2-stage recursive heuristic using tabu search to solve the model and tested it on the entire South Australian River Murray floodplain. We conclude that modern meta-heuristics can be used to solve the very complex nonlinear problems with spatial and temporal dependencies typical of environmental flow allocation in regulated river ecosystems. The model has been used to inform the investment in, and operation of, flow-control infrastructure in the South Australian River Murray.
