Economic model predictive control (EMPC) is a feedback control technique that employs real-time dynamic optimization to find optimal control actions with respect to a cost function representing the plant economics. The model used in EMPC must be able to capture the important dynamics of the plant. In industry, it may be difficult in many applications to obtain a first-principles model of the process, in which case a linear empirical model constructed using process data may be used as the process model within an EMPC. However, linear empirical models may not capture the nonlinear dynamics over a wide region of state-space, restricting an EMPC to operate in a small region within which the potential of EMPC for improving process profit is not realized. For this reason, we present a scheme for expanding the level sets used to design state constraints in Lyapunov-based economic model predictive control (LEMPC) with linear empirical models to improve the process profit, incorporating on-line updates of the linear empirical model triggered by model prediction errors quantified by a moving horizon error detector. A chemical process example illustrates that the proposed LEMPC can maintain closed-loop stability of the process and bring the performance close to that which would be obtained if the nonlinear process model were used in LEMPC.

The lactose regulation system of Escherichia coli is known to exhibit a bistable behavior. The stable states correspond to the phenotypical states of the system, induced and uninduced. Stochastic modeling of the system enables us to reproduce an experimentally observed phenomenon of spontaneous transitions between the induced and uninduced states. The average behavior of a colony of a large number of cells can be accurately described by an abstract model of the system, which is a two state Markov chain. In this paper, we consider a control problem that involves regulating the fraction of induction of a colony of Escherichia coli. We use the abstract model to design a feedback controller based on model predictive control strategy. Upon simulation, we show that the model predictive control is superior to other control strategies that we have designed before, in terms of less fluctuation in the control input and less tracking error.

Maintaining electric power system stability is paramount, especially in extreme contingencies involving unexpected outages of multiple generators or transmission lines that are typical during severe weather events. Such outages often lead to large supply-demand mismatches followed by subsequent system frequency deviations from their nominal value. The extent of frequency deviations is an important metric of system resilience, and its timely mitigation is a central goal of power system operation and control. This paper develops a novel nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) method to minimize frequency deviations when the grid is affected by an unforeseen loss of multiple components. Our method is based on a novel multi-period alternating current optimal power flow (ACOPF) formulation that accurately models both nonlinear electric power flow physics and the primary and secondary frequency response of generator control mechanisms. We develop a distributed parallel Julia package for solving the large-scale nonlinear optimization problems that result from our NMPC method and thereby address realistic test instances on existing high-performance computing architectures. Our method demonstrates superior performance in terms of frequency recovery over existing industry practices, where generator levels are set based on the solution of single-period classical ACOPF models.

This paper proposes a multivariable model predictive control scheme for discharge pressure regulation in centrifugal compressors. The main novelty of the proposed approach is that three control inputs are considered: the rotational speed of the compressor, an anti-surge valve for gas recycle and the inlet guide vane, whose variations allow one to significantly enlarge the operating region of the compressor and hence to enhance the authority of the control system. Surge prevention is achieved by including in the model an output variable accounting for the distance of the operating point from the surge limit. Such distance is defined on a compressor performance map which is invariant to changes in the inlet conditions, and thus its computation requires only standard pressure measurements available from the plant. Numerical simulations show that the proposed control system is able to meet the desired specifications, in the presence of different types of disturbances occurring along the pipeline.

Recent results on asymptotically stabilizing model predictive control for hybrid dynamical systems are relaxed by exploiting basic knowledge about the structure of the set of trajectories. Specifically, it is shown that when the system to be controlled has trajectories with infinitely many discrete transitions, the cost functional of the underlying optimal control problem does not need to weight the state and the input in continuous time. An analogue of this result shows that when trajectories are defined over all ordinary time, the functional does not need to weight the state and the input during discrete transitions. Results are demonstrated with recurring examples.

In this paper, a novel model predictive control (MPC) scheme is presented for linear stochastic systems with probabilistic constraints. Instead of the prediction of the behavior of the original linear stochastic system, the behavior of a corresponding nominal linear system is predicted. Thus, the optimization problem that is solved online has the same computational burden as the ones of standard deterministic MPC of nominal systems. The control signal is specified in terms of both a nominal control action and an ancillary control law, where the ancillary control law is an optimal control law of a linear optimal stochastic control problem. Convergence of the systems in probability is discussed. The approach is illustrated with a numerical example.

nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) needs to solve optimal control problems (OCPs) instantaneously so that new input can be applied in time. Computational delay, which may destroy the stability of the closed-loop, usually arises in the solution procedure of non-convex and nonlinear OCP with differential equations as its constraints. The traditional termination criteria for optimization algorithms usually cause the solution procedure to converge slowly and waste computing resources. In this paper, new termination rules called Reduced Precision Solution (RPS) criteria are proposed. The RPS criteria take the practical solution precision into account and lead to good approximate solutions of OCPs. Thus, the computation time is saved, and the negative effect of computational delay is reduced. A classical nonlinear model formulated by ordinary differential equations is simulated to demonstrate the efficiency of the RPS criteria.

A fast implementation of a given predictive controller for nonlinear systems is introduced through a piecewise constant approximate function defined over an hyper-cube partition of the system state space. Such a state partition is obtained by maximizing the hyper-cube volumes in order to guarantee, besides stability, an a priori fixed trajectory error as well as input and state constraints satisfaction. The presented approximation procedure is achieved by solving a set of nonconvex polynomial optimization problems, whose approximate solutions are computed by means of semidefinite relaxation techniques for semialgebraic problems.

In this work a novel controller design method is suggested for motorway shockwave management using ramp metering and variable speed limit (VSL) control. The proposed controller has a feedforward-feedback control structure that is designed for a motorway arterial model. For the feedback design the nonlinear model predictive control is used. The feedforward control is utilized to enhance the operability of the control system to high disturbances. Two different controllers are designed: while controller A uses continuous VSL signs, VSL input values of controller B is chosen from a discrete set. For the latter, a two-step optimization is used to decrease oscillations. The designed controllers are tested in a case study, in which a total traffic breakdown situation is modeled. In the uncontrolled case, the initial perturbation leads to a traffic jam with zero traffic speed, whereas the proposed control design is capable of preventing the congestion.

We present a method to improve the performance of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) by compromising between the time delay caused by a computational algorithm and the accuracy of the resulting control law in order to achieve best possible closed-loop performance. The main feature of the method is an a-priori error approximation derived for the neighboring-extremal update (NEU) algorithm, a fast NMPC algorithm presented recently by the authors. The error estimate provides the deviation of the current control trajectory from the (unknown) optimal control trajectory. The a-priori error estimator is incorporated in an on-line decision making process which simultaneously decides on the quality of the computed controls and the computational delay. In particular, the optimal number of QP iterations in an SQP strategy is determined on each horizon prior to the computation of the current control move.
