The maximum a posteriori penalty function (MAP-PF) approach is applied to tracking the bearing and bearing rate of multiple wideband sources in unknown colored noise. The track estimation problem is formulated directly from the array data using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation criterion. The penalty function (PF) method of nonlinear programming is used to obtain a tractable solution. A sequential update procedure is developed in which penalized maximum likelihood estimates of target bearings, spectra, and noise parameters are computed and then used as synthetic measurements in a set of Kalman filter trackers. The two steps are coupled via the penalty function. During parameter estimation, the penalty function prevents erroneous outlier estimates which can cause the tracker to lose track. During the tracking step, it determines the influence of the parameter estimates on the final track estimates by adaptively adjusting the measurement error variance. Performance is demonstrated on a typical sonar scenario.

This contribution presents a heuristic approach for solving nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems with highly constrained discontinuous domains. A new fuzzy penalty strategy is proposed to make stochastic algorithms capable of solving optimization problems with a large number of difficult-to-satisfy constraints. The method consists of a dynamic penalty formulation based on the magnitude and frequency of the constraint violation, applied according to a hierarchical classification of the constraints. The new strategy is introduced to a multi-objective optimization algorithm based on evolutionary strategies. The performance of the proposed methodology is investigated on the basis of a multi-enterprise supply chain optimization problem.

In this paper, we consider the task to start the operation of an industrial evaporation system. Rigorous modelling gives rise to a hybrid automaton with large nonlinear DAE-models that describe the continuous evolution in the discrete locations. The optimization problem is solved by a hierarchical procedure that consists of a branch-and-bound algorithm with embedded nonlinear dynamic optimization over a finite look-ahead horizon. Important elements of the algorithm are the introduction of a dynamic choice of the time intervals over which the controls are constant and of tailored penalty functions in order to obtain solutions which are close to infeasible trajectories.

This paper presents a optimization algorithm to improve the positioning accuracy of the nodes in wireless sensor networks, and introduces RSSI-based (Received Signal Strength Indicator) wireless location technology on formation of multiple mobile robots. First, the RSSI value, which is measured between mobile node and reference node, is optimized by Gaussian model. At the same time, using the classical method to calculate the positioning coordinates of each mobile node with the optimized RSSI values. Then, the position information and the RSSI values between each two mobile nodes are introduced to assist localization. A new optimization algorithm is proposed in this paper. Therefore, the location problem is transformed into a nonlinear optimization problem. The experimental results showed that this method can improve the positioning accuracy of mobile nodes and implements the goal to estimate the positions of all nodes at one time. It provides a basis for the study on positioning of dynamic network and multi-robot formation control.

A framework for solving a class of nonlinear programming problems via the filter method is presented. The proposed technique first solve a sequence of quadratic programming subproblems via line search strategy and to induce global convergence, trial points are accepted provided there is a sufficient decrease in the objective function or constraints violation function. In the event when the step size has reached a minimum threshold such that the trial iterate is rejected by the filter, the algorithm temporarily exits to a trust region based algorithm to generate iterates that approach the feasible region and also acceptable to the filter. Computational results on selected large scale CUTE problems on the prototype code fiILS are very encouraging and numerical performance with LOQO and SNOPT show that the algorithm is efficient and reliable.

The free piston energy converter is a type of power unit consisting of an internal combustion engine and a linear electrical machine. Due to the lack of mechanical linkages which constrain the position and speed of the free piston, a motion controller is required to controlling the movement of piston. The use of direct collocation method to solve piston motion optimal control problem is described in this paper. Via discretization the state variables and control variables at the collocation points, the optimal control problem is transformed into a nonlinear programming problem. Then, the desired input for each stroke can be calculated by solving this nonlinear programming problem. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method leads to stable piston motion.
