Multiple-attribute decision analysis (AMDA) problem consists of both quantitative data and qualitative information with subjective judgments of ambiguity. The evidential reasoning (ER) approach is well-suited for dealing with such MADA problems and can generate comprehensive distributed assessments for different alternatives. In the ER approach, many types of uncertainties could he considered such as imprecision, vagueness and fuzziness. In this paper, both triangular fuzzy weights and fuzzy utilities are proposed in the ER approach, which may be incurred in a lot of circumstances such as group decision making situation. Several pairs of ER based non-linear programming algorithms for MADA are conducted to generate the global fuzzy belief degrees of the assessed alternative. A case study based on R&D project assessment in a car manufacturer is implemented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper presents several didactic examples of the nonlinear programming (NLP) problems solved with Mathematica. We solved examples of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, Lagrange multipliers method, convex optimization, and graphical method. We compared the hand calculation in Karush-Kuhn-Tucker method with Lagrange multipliers method. The paper contains Mathematica symbolic codes used for Karush-Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions and the Hessian analysis in convex optimization. We present also some didactic graphs for various aspects of NLP problems using plots and dynamic plots. The use of Mathematica during teaching students about NLP by Computer Algebra System (CAS) seems to be very useful both as the calculations support (checking hand calculation) and when creating didactic graphical visualizations using dynamic plots. We did not find in available literature any similar example of NLP problems solved with CAS or the use of dynamic plots.

This. paper is on the problem of short-term hydro scheduling. We propose a method, based on nonlinear programming, which considers hydroelectric power generation as a nonlinear function of water discharge and of the head. The main contribution of this paper is that the maximum power generation is also considered as head-dependent in order to obtain more realistic and feasible results. The proposed method has been applied successfully to solve a case study based on one of the Portuguese cascaded hydro systems, providing a higher profit at an acceptable computation time in comparison with classical optimization methods based on linear programming that ignore head dependence.

Due to their complexity, currently available bounded model checking techniques based on Boolean Satisfiability and Satisfiability Modulo Theories inadequately handle non-linear floating-point and integer arithmetic. Using a numerical approach, we reduce a bounded model checking problem to a constraint satisfaction problem. Currently available techniques attempt to solve the constraint problem but can guarantee neither global convergence nor correctness. Using the IPOPT and ANTIGONE non-linear programming (NLP) solvers, we transform the original constraint satisfaction problem from one having disjunctions of constraints into one having conjunctions of constraints with a few introduced auxiliary variables. The transformation lowers the computing cost and preserves the Boolean structure of the original problem while complying with limits of NLP solvers.

By redefining multiplier associated with inequality constraint as a positive definite function of the originally-defined multiplier, u(i)(2) , i = 1, 2, ..., m, say, the nonnegative constraints imposed on inequality constraints in Karush-Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions are removed completely. Hence it is no longer necessary to convert inequality constraints into equality constraints by slack variables in order to reuse those results concerned only with equality constraints. Utilizing this technique, improved Lagrange nonlinear programming neural networks are devised, which handle inequality constraints directly without adding slack variables. Then the local stability of the proposed Lagrange neural networks is analyzed rigourously with Liapunov's first approximation principle, and its convergence is discussed deeply with LaSalle's invariance principle. Finally, an illustrative example shows that the proposed neural networks can effectively solve the nonlinear programming problems.
