Moving Horizon Estimation (MHE) is an efficient optimization-based strategy for state estimation. Despite the attractiveness of this method, its application in industrial settings has been rather limited. This has been mainly due to the difficulty to solve, in real-time, the associated dynamic optimization problems. In this work, a fast MHE algorithm able to overcome this bottleneck is proposed. The framework exploits the advantages of simultaneous collocation- based formulations and makes use of large-scale nonlinear programming algorithms and sensitivity concepts. The approach is demonstrated on a full-scale polymer process, where accurate state estimates are obtained and on-line calculation times are reduced dramatically.

ZnO films are deposited on glass slides by radio frequency(RF) magnetron sputtering under different powers. The polycrystal structures and surface morphologies of the film are investigated. The optical transmission spectra for the ZnO films are measured within the range from 300 nm to 800 nm. The optical constants and thickness of the films are determined using a nonlinear programming method suggested by Birgin et al. The band gap of the film increases with reducing the nano-size of the film grains. The packing density of the films can be improved by reducing the RF power.

Face to critical contingence situations, the System Operator can require wind farms output reductions. The zonal Delegated Dispatches can act as interface between the System Operator and the producers, allowing a faster and accurate answer. Three probable approaches are mathematically formulated and analyzed in the paper, separately considering the controllability and the possibility of disconnecting the wind farms. The methods are tested and compared by using a realistic test network, extracted from the Spanish national network.

Of course, the latter is preferred because it is cheaper, but there remains the issue of finding the best possible design. A trial-and-error approach simply does not address this task. We consider first the differentiable nonlinear programming problem and study the asymptotic behavior of methods based on a family of penalty functions that approximate asymptotically the usual exact penalty function. We associate two parameters to these functions: one is used to control the slope and the other controls the deviation from the exact penalty. We propose a method that does not change the slope for feasible iterates and show that for problems satisfying the Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification all iterates will remain feasible after a finite number of iterations. The same results are obtained for non-smooth convex problems under a Slater qualification condition.

This paper is aimed toward the definition of a new exact augmented Lagrangian function for two-sided inequality constrained problems. The distinguishing feature of this augmented Lagrangian function is that it employs only one multiplier for each two-sided constraint. We prove that stationary points, local minimizers and global minimizers of the exact augmented Lagrangian function correspond exactly to KKT pairs, local solutions and global solutions of the constrained problem.

In this paper, we describe how to reformulate a problem that has second-order cone and/or semi-definiteness constraints in order to solve it using a general-purpose interior-point algorithm for nonlinear programming. The resulting problems are smooth and convex, and numerical results from the DIMACS Implementation Challenge problems and SDPLib are provided.
