A general approach is introduced to allocate the forces acting on the center of gravity to the four wheels of a vehicle by using an inversion of vehicle dynamics and a non-linear optimization. This makes it possible to compare all useful configurations of actively and passively controlled influencing variables of vehicle dynamics (steering angles, brake/drive torques, wheel loads and camber angles), with and without actuator dynamics and to investigate the impact of actuator failures on vehicle dynamics.

To identify important fuel cell performance parameters for predicting its performance and assessing its health from its operating data (without performing special tests), this paper describes a model based parameter identification approach. It employs a non-linear programming method to identify optimal values of parameters of a fuel cell model that minimize the difference between the voltage trajectory predicted by the model and that of an actual fuel cell when both are subjected to the same current draws. Using an existing fuel cell model, simulation studies were carried out to demonstrate the feasibility. Specifically, the membrane resistance and a coefficient of the concentration loss term were identified. The study shows that both can be identified accurately provided a reasonable initial guess is used, and the farther the initial guess from the true values the longer it takes to converge, in general.

In this paper, a multi-objective nonlinear programming method is proposed. That is, the problems which have fuzzy multiple objective functions and constraints with GUB (Generalized Upper Bounding) structure are solved by the proposed Hybridized Genetic Algorithms (HGA). This approach enables a flexible optimal system design by applying fuzzy goals and fuzzy constraints. In this Genetic Algorithm (GA), we propose a new chromosome representation that represents the GUB structure simply and effectively at the same time. Also, by introducing the HGAs that combine the proposed heuristic algorithm and makes use of the peculiarity of GUB structure to GA, the proposed approach is more efficient than the previous method in finding a solution. Further, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a large-scale optimal system reliability design problem is introduced.

We study a nonlinear knapsack problem whose objective function consists of the difference between a linear function of the variables and a general nonlinear function of another linear function of the variables. The special structure of this problem allows us to provide a bound on the number of fractional variables in an optimal solution and analysis of the KKT conditions leads to an effective solution method. We develop a condition under which our method is efficient and show that if this condition is violated, determining the optimal solution with the fewest number of fractional variables is NP-hard.

nonlinear programming (NLP) filter methods are a recent development In trust region sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithms. The NLP filter is a bi-objective representation of the two competing aims to minimize the objective function and to satisfy the constraints. It replaces the penalty merit function as a criterion in trust region SQP for the acceptance or rejection of trial steps. The filter can also be used to the advantage of many a sequential approximate optimization (SAO) method in structural and multidisciplinary optimization. Accordingly, we cast gradient-based SAO algorithms in the filter-SQP algorithmic framework of Fletcher, Leyffer, and Toint. The resultant filter-SAO method is then applied to some well-known structural optimization test problems, using several popular engineering approximation functions, namely the linear, reciprocal, conservative, and spherical quadratic approximations. The test problems confirm the effectiveness of the filter for use in SAO.
