Waveform-Selective Metasurface Absorber With a Single-Patch Structure and Lumped nonlinear circuit for a Higher-Order Mode

Microwave absorbers (MAs) play an important role in protecting sensitive electronic devices from electromagnetic (EM) interference by absorbing the energy of incoming waves and reducing unnecessary reflection or transmission. Here, we numerically and experimentally demonstrated two types of waveform-selective microwave metasurface absorbers (MMAs) with a single square-patch structure and a lumped nonlinear circuit. Our MMAs were designed to preferentially absorb signals at the same frequencies, including a higher-order mode. The proposed capacitor-type MMA was comprised of a single square-patch structure connected with a diode bridge containing a capacitor paired with a resistor in parallel, which could effectively absorb short pulses at two distinct frequencies. Similarly, the proposed inductor-type MMA was comprised of the same square-patch structure, except for the internal circuit replaced with an inductor paired with a resistor in series, which could effectively absorb continuous waves (CWs) at the same two frequencies. The effects of the parameters of lumped circuit components (resistor, capacitor, and inductor) and geometrical parameters on the waveform-selective absorptance of these two types of MMAs for normal incident short pulses and CWs were systemically studied. Both the simulation and experimental results showed selective absorption for specific waveforms at the same two frequencies, including a high-order mode. Thus, the waveform-selective MMAs can provide a wide application range, such as EM shielding, detection, sensing, and wireless communications.

Tuning inter-modal energy exchanges of a nonlinear electromechanical beam by a nonlinear circuit

A model of a nonlinear beam with a piezoelectric patch linked to a nonlinear circuit is considered. The physical and mechanical parameters of the system are such that it presents a 1:3 internal resonance. The aim is to study, for different time scales, the effect of the nonlinearity of the electrical circuit on energy exchanges between the resonant modes. In fact, we would like to master energy channelling between two internally resonant modes of a composite beam via a nonlinear circuit. The investigations are carried out on the projected system equations on its internally resonant modes. The system behaviours at different scales of time are studied by coupled methods of complexification and multiple scale. Analytical developments permit to reveal different system dynamics characterized by periodic and/or non-periodic regimes. Finally, the paper is accompanied by comparisons between systems equipped with a resonant circuit (linear) and a nonlinear one.

Enabling Wireless Communications, Energy Harvesting, and Energy Saving by Using a Multimode Smart nonlinear circuit (MSNC)

In this article, a multimode smart nonlinear circuit (MSNC) for wireless communications (transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx) modes) as well as energy harvesting (EH) and power saving is presented. The proposed MSNC is designed at 680 MHz and has three ports, which are connected to an antenna, T/R (transceiver), and power-saving modules. According to the input-output power level, the proposed MSNC has three modes of operations: Rx, power saving, and Tx, for low (<-25 dBm), mid ( >-25 and < 0 dBm), and high (>5 dBm) power ranges, respectively. In the power-saving mode, when the received power is greater than the sensitivity of the Rx module, the excess power is directed to the EH load (power storage), while the Rx direction is still in place. The fact that the proposed MSNC can manage the received power level smartly and without any external control, distinguishes the proposed MSNC from other EH circuits. The proposed MSNC operates within a power range from -50 to +15 dBm, demonstrates an efficiency of more than 60% in the power-saving mode, and has acceptable matching over a large frequency range. The design procedure of the proposed MSNC along with the theoretical, simulation, and measurement results are presented in this article. Good agreement between theory, simulation, and measurement results confirms the accuracy of the design procedure.

In this work, chaos is experimentally observed from a circuit, in which the nonlinear element is a real memristor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first nonlinear circuit with a commercially available memristor (KNOWM memristor), which has been implemented in order to experimentally investigate chaos and phenomena related with it, such as a route to chaos via period-doubling, one- scroll and the well-known double-scroll chaotic attractors.

In the last decade, researchers, who work in the field of nonlinear circuits, have the "dream" to use a real memristor, which is the only nonlinear fundamental circuit element, in a new or other reported nonlinear circuit in literature, in order to experimentally investigate chaos. With this intention, for the first time, a well-known nonlinear circuit, in which its nonlinear element has been replaced with a commercially available memristor (KNOWM memristor), is presented in this work. Interesting phenomena concerning chaos theory, such as period-doubling route to chaos, coexisting attractors, one-scroll and double-scroll chaotic attractors are experimentally observed.

An Ultrabroadband Generator of Chaotic Microwave Oscillations with an Additional nonlinear circuit

The possibility of generating ultrabroadband chaotic oscillations within a frequency range up to 60 GHz with a bipolar SiGe heterojunction transistor is demonstrated. The uppermost frequency of this range is determined by the cutoff frequency of the active generator element. Such a possibility appears after the generator structure is complemented with an additional nonlinear circuit, in which chaotic oscillations can be developed up to the aforementioned frequency. Some results of the experimental study of one generator configuration based on lumped elements are presented.

nonlinear circuit analysis of harmonic currents in a floating Langmuir probe with a capacitive load

Plasma diagnostics using the floating harmonic technique were first used to obtain the electron temperature in a tokamak plasma. In this technique, the electron temperature depends on the ratio of the harmonic currents in a resistive sheath. Because these harmonic currents are determined by a modulated sheath voltage, calculation of the exact modulated voltage across the sheath is important;in general, the voltage is calculated using a phase of the first harmonic current. However, when a series load capacitance is present, the second harmonic currents are abnormally reduced compared to those expected by the conventional floating harmonic model, resulting in an unreliable measurement of the electron temperature. To describe this phenomenon, we used a modified floating harmonic model by applying the harmonic balance technique, a method that analyzes nonlinear circuits. Theoretical prediction of the harmonic current obtained from the modified model was compared with the experimental results, and they are in good agreement. In addition, the degrees of sheath nonlinearity, defined as the ratio of the second harmonic current (or voltage) to the fundamental current (or voltage), are discussed.

A Simple nonlinear circuit Contains an Infinite Number of Functions

The complex dynamics of a simple nonlinear circuit contains an infinite number of functions. Specifically, this brief shows that the number of different functions that a nonlinear or chaotic circuit can implement exponentially increases as the circuit evolves in time, and this exponential increase is quantified with an exponent that is named the computing exponent. This brief argues that a simple nonlinear circuit that illustrates rich complex dynamics can embody infinitely many different functions, each of which can be dynamically selected. In practice, not all of these functions may be accessible due to factors such as noise or instability of the functions. However, these infinitely many functions do exist within the dynamics of the nonlinear circuit regardless of accessibility or inaccessibility of the functions in practice. This nonlinear-dynamics-based approach to computation opens the door for implementing extremely slim low-power circuits that are capable of performing many different types of functions.

A Continuation Method-Based Approach for Measuring the DC Behavior of nonlinear circuits

A set of measurement techniques that can find multiple DC operating points, as well as explore regions of operation that are unobservable with traditional experimental methods, is described. These techniques are particularly useful for transistor circuits that exhibit hysteresis, S- and N-type current-versus-voltage curves and multiple DC operating points (typically with different physical stability properties). These techniques are the experimental version of well-known homotopy techniques used in the simulation of DC operating points and can be applied without access to a numerical simulation model. Such numerical simulation techniques used to identify and describe such behaviors are also surveyed and compared with the measurement techniques described herein.
