The nonlinear dynamics of cantilevered piezoelectric beams is investigated under simultaneous parametric and external excitations. The beam is composed of a substrate and two piezoelectric layers and assumed as an Euler-Bernoulli model with inextensible deformation. A nonlinear distributed parameter model of cantilevered piezoelectric energy harvesters is proposed using the generalized Hamilton's principle. The proposed model includes geometric and inertia nonlinearity, but neglects the material nonlinearity. Using the Galerkin decomposition method and harmonic balance method, analytical expressions of the frequency-response curves are presented when the first bending mode of the beam plays a dominant role. Using these expressions, we investigate the effects of the damping, load resistance, electromechanical coupling, and excitation amplitude on the frequency-response curves. We also study the difference between the nonlinear lumped-parameter and distributed- parametermodel for predicting the performance of the energy harvesting system. Only in the case of parametric excitation, we demonstrate that the energy harvesting system has an initiation excitation threshold below which no energy can be harvested. We also illustrate that the damping and load resistance affect the initiation excitation threshold.

A model predictive control strategy for a concentrated thermal power plant proposed. Design of ate proposed controller is based On ail. estimated linear tune invariant state space model around a nominal operating point. The model is estimated directly from input-output data using the subspace identification method and taking into account the frequency response of the plant. Input-output data are obtained from a nonlinear distributed parameter model of a plant rather than the plant itself. Effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in terms of tracking and disturbance rejection is evaluated through two different scenarios created in a nonlinear simulation environment. A nonlinear analysis of an energy harvester consisting of a multilayered cantilever beam with a tip mass is performed. The model takes into account geometric, inertia, and piezoelectric nonlinearities. A combination of the Galerkin technique, the extended Hamilton principle, and the Gauss law is used to derive a reduced-order model of the harvester. The method of multiple scales is used to determine analytical expressions for the tip deflection, output voltage, and harvested power near the first global natural frequency. The results show that one- or two-mode approximations are not sufficient to produce accurate estimates of the voltage and harvested power. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of the nonlinear piezoelectric coefficients and the excitation amplitude on the system response. The effective nonlinearity may be of the hardening or softening type, depending on the relative magnitudes of the different nonlinearities.
