Analytic model for the dynamics of electron trapping materials with applications in nonlinear optical signal processing

The optical mechanism and dynamics of electron-trapping material under simultaneous illumination with two wavelengths is investigated. Our analytical model proves that the equilibrium-state luminescence of such a material can be controlled to produce highly nonlinear behavior with potential applications in nonlinear optical signal processing and optical realization of nonlinear dynamical systems. Combining this new approach with state-of-the-art fast spatial light modulators and CCD cameras that can precisely control and measure exposure, large arrays of nonlinear processing elements can be accommodated in a thin film of this material. This program resulted in a solid framework for enabling on-chip nonlinear optical processing through realization of five solid material and device platforms with unique features, for the first time 1 multi-layer SiSiNSiC material platform for nonlinear optics, quantum photonics, and optoelectronic applications including the demonstration of the coupling modulator architecture for low-power wideband devices, 2 a hybrid material platform formed by integration of phase-change materials with SiSiN for miniaturized ultra-low-power optoelectronic and nonlinear photonic devices, 3 a hybrid active material platform formed by integration of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides with CMOS-compatible substrates with the possibility of forming lateral heterostructures through a simple annealing process for the formation of active and nonlinear devices, 4 an integrated photonicphononic material and device platform for nonlinear devices based on combined acoustic and optical waves e.g., SBS-based devices, and 5 an integrated material platform based on an engineered array of plasmonic nanostructures for sensing and nonlinear optics on chip. The research in this program resulted in over 20 journal papers, 25 conference papers, and 20 invited talks.

We propose and demonstrate tunable homodyne detection using nonlinear optical signal processing to automatically lock a "local" pump laser to an incoming 20-to-40-Gbaud QPSK data signal. Open eyes are obtained for both in-phase and quadrature components of the signal after similar to 200-km transmission over SMF-28 and DCF fibers. The BER performance of the proposed homodyne detection scheme is also compared with the conventional intradyne receiver.

Functional all-optical logic gates for true time-domain signal processing in nonlinear photonic crystal waveguides

We present a conceptual study on the realization of functional and easily scalable all-optical NOT, AND and NAND logic gates using bandgap solitons in coupled photonic crystal waveguides. The underlying structure consists of a planar air-hole type photonic crystal with a hexagonal lattice of air holes in crystalline silicon (c-Si) as the nonlinear background material. The remaining logical operations can be performed using combinations of these three logic gates. A unique feature of the proposed working scheme is that it operates in the true time-domain, enabling temporal solitons to maintain a stable pulse envelope during each logical operation. Hence, multiple concatenated all-optical logic gates can be easily realized, paving the way to multiple-input all-optical logic gates for ultrafast full-optical digital signal processing. In the suggested setup, there is no need to amplify the output signal after each operation, which can be directly used as a new input signal for another logical operation. The feasibility and efficiency of the proposed logic gates as well as their scalability is demonstrated using our original rigorous theoretical formalism together with full-wave computational electromagnetics. Extended depth-of-field infrared imaging with deeply learned wavefront coding

Wavefront coding (WFC) techniques, including optical coding and digital image processing stages, enable significant capabilities for extending the depth of field of imaging systems. In this study, we demonstrated a deeply learned far-infrared WFC camera with an extended depth of field. We designed and optimized a high-order polynomial phase mask by a genetic algorithm, exhibiting a higher defocus consistency of the modulated transfer functions than works published previously. Additionally, we trained a generative adversarial network based on a synthesized WFC dataset for the digital processing part, which is more effective and robust than conventional decoding methods. Furthermore, we captured real-world infrared images using the WFC camera with far, middle, and near object distances. Their results after wavefront coding/decoding showed that the model of deeply learned networks improves the image quality and signal-to-noise ratio significantly and quickly. Therefore, we construct a novel artificial intelligent method of deeply learned WFC optical imaging by applying infrared wavelengths, but not limited to, and provide good potential for its practical application in "smart" imaging and large range target detection.(c) 2022 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement

Extended phase-matching properties of periodically poled potassium niobate crystals for mid-infrared polarization-entangled photon-pair generation

We report the extended phase-matching (EPM) properties of two kinds of periodically poled potassium niobate (KNbO3 or KN) crystals (i.e., periodic 180 degrees- and 90 degrees-domain structures) that are highly useful for the generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs in the mid-infrared (IR) spectral region. Under the degenerate Type II spontaneous parametric downconversion process satisfying the EPM condition, an input single photon with a frequency of 2 omega generates a pair of synchronized photons with identical frequencies of omega that are orthogonally polarized with respect to each other (i.e., the frequency-coincident, polarization-entangled biphoton states). Our simulation results illustrate that the EPM is achievable in the mid-IR spectral region: at the wavelengths of 3.80 mu m and 4.03 mu m for periodic 90 degrees -and 180 degrees-domain structures, respectively. We will describe in detail the EPM properties of both cases in terms of interaction types and the corresponding nonlinear optic coefficients, phase-matching bandwidths, and domain poling periods. The calculated EPM bandwidths are much broader than 200 nm in the mid-IR for both cases, exhibiting a great potential for nonlinear-optic signal processing in quantum communication systems operating in the mid-IR bands. We demonstrate optical performance monitoring of in-band optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and residual dispersion, at bit rates of 40Gb/s, 160Gb/s and 640Gb/s, using slow-light enhanced optical third harmonic generation (THG) in a compact (80 mu m) dispersion engineered 2D silicon photonic crystal waveguide. We show that there is no intrinsic degradation in the enhancement of the signal processing at 640Gb/s relative to that at 40Gb/s, and that this device should operate well above 1Tb/s. This work represents a record 16-fold increase in processing speed for a silicon device, and opens the door for slow light to play a key role in ultra-high bandwidth telecommunications systems. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common renal diseases manifested by gradual loss of kidney function with no symptoms in the early stage. The underlying mechanism in the pathogenesis of CKD with various causes such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and kidney infection is not well understood. In vivo longitudinal repetitive cellular-level observation of the kidney of the CKD animal model can provide novel insights to diagnose and treat the CKD by visualizing the dynamically changing pathophysiology of CKD with its progression over time. In this study, using two-photon intravital microscopy with a single 920 nm fixed-wavelength fs-pulsed laser, we longitudinally and repetitively observed the kidney of an adenine diet-induced CKD mouse model for 30 days. Interestingly, we could successfully visualize the 2,8-dihydroxyadenine (2,8-DHA) crystal formation with a second-harmonics generation (SHG) signal and the morphological deterioration of renal tubules with autofluorescence using a single 920 nm two-photon excitation. The longitudinal in vivo two-photon imaging results of increasing 2,8-DHA crystals and decreasing tubular area ratio visualized by SHG and autofluorescence signal, respectively, were highly correlated with the CKD progression monitored by a blood test showing increased cystatin C and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels over time. This result suggests the potential of label-free second-harmonics generation crystal imaging as a novel optical technique for in vivo CKD progression monitoring. Cascaded all-optical operations in a hybrid integrated 80-Gb/s logic circuit

We demonstrate logic functionalities in a high-speed all-optical logic circuit based on differential Mach-Zehnder interferometers with semiconductor optical amplifiers as the nonlinear optical elements. The circuit, implemented by hybrid integration of the semiconductor optical amplifiers on a planar lightwave circuit platform fabricated in silica glass, can be flexibly configured to realize a variety of Boolean logic gates. We present both simulations and experimental demonstrations of cascaded all-optical operations for 80-Gb/s on-off keyed data. (C) 2014 optical Society of America
