With increasing enrolment in computer science undergraduate programs, faculty at many post-secondary institutions are struggling to cope with larger section sizes and fewer resources. Because faculty have more students to support, conventional approaches like face-to-face one-on-one instructor office hours may not scale to adequately serve students. We report on two alternative models for providing help to students: a drop-in centre open to students from all course levels and a drop-in centre open to only students from first-year courses. Using a swipe-card queueing system, we collected information about usage over one academic year. Here, we report on drop-in centre usage including wait times, service times, and which courses and students are the heaviest users. We compare the two models, outline lessons learned, and recommend possible improvements.

Many factors have been cited for poor performance of students in CS1. To investigate how assessment mechanisms may impact student performance, nine experienced CS1 instructors reviewed final examinations from a variety of North American institutions. The majority of the exams reviewed were composed predominantly of high-value, integrative code-writing questions, and the reviewers regularly underestimated the number of CS1 concepts required to answer these questions. An evaluation of the content and cognitive requirements of individual questions suggests that in order to succeed, students must internalize a large amount of CS1 content. This emphasizes the need for focused assessment techniques to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.

Recent advancements in generative artificial intelligence are poised to reshape introductory programming education, challenging conventional teaching methodologies. This paper presents a scoping review that explores the current understanding of integrating generative artificial intelligence tools in the learning of introductory programming. Through an analysis of 28 selected studies, this review provides a snapshot of the landscape in mid-2024, presenting benefits, concerns, and recommendations surrounding the use of generative artificial intelligence within programming education. It finds insufficient guidance on how to implement recommended pedagogical strategies, limited consideration of student perceptions and experiences, and a predominance of short study time frames. Additionally, there is a significant research gap in second-level education, particularly in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The paper discusses how these gaps signal a need for more human-centered approaches in the current research. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research, aiming to inspire further inquiry and advance the understanding of generative artificial intelligence's role in programming education from a human-centered perspective.

This report documents the implementation of a self-paced, mastery learning inspired CS1 course. The course was designed to increase the completion rates observed in flipped and online CS1 formats already offered at our institution. We explore the experience of students in the course and evaluate performance outcomes using grade data from all three CS1 formats, student survey responses, and exit interviews. Our evaluation identifies three main challenges in our implementation. First, the course requires significant resources and administering it is significantly more time consuming for instructors than a regular course. Second, students hesitated to treat mastery quizzes as formative. Finally, the flexibility that the course provided, with little structure and few incentives to help students stay on track, led to considerable procrastination. These factors combined to lead students to delay coursework until the end of the semester - and beyond. As a result, while our data shows an increase in completion relative to the online format, we saw no change in completion relative to the flipped CS1 offering and saw no change in student performance as evaluated by a final exam. However, students reported more deep engagement with and understanding of the material, which encourages us to further develop the course.

The SIGCSE Technical Symposium is celebrating its 50th year, and a constant theme throughout this history has been to better understand how novices learn to program. In this paper, we present a perspective on the evolution of introductory programming education research at the Symposium over these 50 years. We also situate the Symposium's impact in the context of the wider literature on introductory programming research. Applying a systematic approach to collecting papers presented at the Symposium that focus on novice programming / CS1, we categorized hundreds of papers according to their main focus, revealing important introductory programming topics and their trends from 1970 to 2018. Some of these topics have faded from prominence and are less relevant today while others, including many topics focused on students such as making learning programming more appropriate from gender, diversity, accessibility and inclusion standpoints have garnered significant attention more recently. We present discussions on these trends and in doing so, we provide a checkpoint for introductory programming research. This may provide insights for future research on how we teach novices and how they learn to program.

This case study explores an inverted classroom offering of an introductory programming course (CS1). Students prepared for lecture by watching short lecture videos and completing required in-video quiz questions. During lecture, the students worked through exercises with the support of the instructor and teaching assistants. We describe the course implementation and its assessment, including pre- and post-course surveys. We also discuss lessons learned, modifications that we plan to make for the next offering, and recommendations for others teaching inverted courses.

Students are nowadays being introduced to the digital age as part of their formal education. This includes practical programming skills as well as more conceptual thinking tools developed in the discipline of computer science, sometimes denoted Computational Thinking (CT). The connection between CT and doing programming is sometimes thought of as the connection between theory and practice. The pragmatic thinker Dewey embraced practice in learning and argued that learning and knowing always come from experiencing the world. According to this view, there are no epistemological differences between theory and practice. In computer programming the student's active learning in the form of physical motor movement is important. Using the pragmatic way of analyzing learning to program puts a focus on the situated thinking during the practical programming, which relates to theories about CT. This research is focusing on the practical hands-on part of novice programming and in this aims at getting insights about factors important when learning to program that could inform teachers in the Computer Science classroom.

Recursion and iteration are two key topics taught in introductory Computer Science. This is especially so for CS2 students, as CS2 is the course where recursion is typically taught and where control-flow concepts are solidified. When asked to solve a problem that could feasibly be solved with recursion or iteration, what do CS2 students choose to do? And how does this choice relate to the correctness of their code? This paper provides one answer to these questions through an analysis of student exam responses to a problem on finding deepest common ancestors in trees. We find that 19% of students choose to use iteration, 51% choose recursion, and 16% choose to combine both iteration and recursion. In terms of correctness, we find that students who choose iteration perform better than those who choose recursion and the combination of both. Additionally, we find concern in the number of students who seemingly do not understand what the question is asking. We end the paper with some comments on helping students choose an appropriate control-flow strategy and a discussion of this type of question on a final exam.

While online communities exist surrounding blocks programming environments, they do not support the type of feedback a novice programmer might receive in a classroom setting. We propose a feedback system in which experienced programmers author feedback and programmatic rules to distribute feedback to novice programmers. Finally, we outline three main considerations for designing systems for online community feedback for novice programmers: community members, the format of the feedback, and how the feedback is distributed at a large scale.
