Partially coupled extended stochastic gradient algorithm for nonlinear multivariable output error moving average systems

Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to study the parameter estimation problem of nonlinear multivariable output error moving average systems. Design/methodology/approach-A partially coupled extended stochastic gradient algorithm is presented for nonlinear multivariable systems by using the decomposition technique. Findings-The proposed algorithm can realize the coupled computation of the parameter estimates between subsystems. Originality/value-This paper develops a coupled parameter estimation algorithm for nonlinear multivariable systems and directly estimates the system parameters without over-parameterization.

Finding Optimal Solutions for Generalized Quantum State Discrimination Problems

We study an optimal quantum measurement for generalized quantum state discrimination problems, which include the problem of finding an optimal measurement maximizing the average success probability with and without a fixed rate of inconclusive results and the problem of finding an optimal measurement in the Neyman-Pearson strategy. We show that for any generalized quantum state discrimination problem, there is a corresponding minimum error discrimination problem sharing the same optimal measurement. We propose an approach in which the optimal measurement is obtained by solving the corresponding minimum error discrimination problem, and clarify the relationship between optimal solutions to the original and the corresponding problems, with which one can obtain an optimal solution to the original problem in some cases. Moreover, as an example of application of our approach, we present an algorithm for numerically obtaining optimal solutions to generalized quantum state discrimination problems.

Temporal finite element methods through the extended framework of Hamilton's principle

With basic ideas of mixed Lagrangian formulation and sequential assigning process for initial conditions, the extended framework of Hamilton's principle (EHP) was recently developed for continuum dynamics. Unlike the original Hamilton's principle, this new variational framework can fully take initial conditions into account for both linear and nonlinear dynamics, so that it provides a sound base to apply a finite element scheme over the temporal domain without any ambiguity. This paper describes temporal finite element approach stemming from the extended Hamilton's principle, which focuses initially on classical single-degree-of-freedom oscillators such as Kelvin-Voigt damped oscillator and an elasto-viscoplastic model. In each case, an appropriate weak form is provided and a corresponding formulation is discretized in the temporal domain with the adoption of Galerkin's method. Basic numerical properties are investigated for the developed numerical algorithms with several computational examples for the elasto-viscoplastic model. For the underlying conservative system, the present method is symplectic and unconditionally stable with respect to the time step. On the other hand, the method provides unconditionally stable and noniterative algorithm for the elasto-viscoplastic model.

A filtering based multi-innovation gradient estimation algorithm and performance analysis for nonlinear dynamical systems

This article studies the problem for parameter identification of nonlinear dynamical systems (i.e., the Hammerstein-Wiener systems) with additive coloured noises. Based on the gradient search and the key term separation, a generalized extended stochastic gradient (GESG) algorithm is given for estimating the system parameters. To improve the computational efficiency, a data filtering based GESG algorithm and a data filtering based multi-innovation GESG algorithm are derived by applying the data filtering technique and the multi-innovation identification theory. Moreover, the proposed algorithms are proved to be convergent under proper conditions. Finally, the simulation results verify the theoretical analysis.

NEW QUASI-NEWTON METHOD FOR SOLVING SYSTEMS OF NONLINEAR EQUATIONS

We propose a new Broyden method for solving systems of nonlinear equations, which uses the first derivatives, but is more efficient than the Newton method (measured by the computational time) for larger dense systems. The new method updates QR or LU decompositions of nonsymmetric approximations of the Jacobian matrix, so it requires O(n(2)) arithmetic operations per iteration in contrast with the Newton method, which requires O(n(3)) operations per iteration. Computational experiments confirm the high efficiency of the new method.

1-out-of-N multi-state standby systems with state-dependent random replacement times

Research on analysis of replacement time in standby systems has focused on systems with binary-state standby components. However, when the standby components are multi-state, the replacement time depends on the state of the standby component when it is activated for replacement. This article considers the impacts of state-dependent random replacement times on 1-out-of-N systems consisting of multi-state standby components. numerical algorithms for evaluating the multi-state standby system's instantaneous availability, expected availability over system mission time and the expected mission completion time are proposed. A Markov state transition model is used to describe the component behaviour in standby mode. The time-to-failure of the operating component and the replacement time of the standby component can obey arbitrary types of distributions. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the proposed numerical algorithms. The effects of the number of standby components, different replacement time distributions and activation sequences are also discussed.

Solving system of Volterra-Fredholm integral equations with Bernstein polynomials and hybrid Bernstein Block-Pulse functions

This work approximates the unknown functions based on the Bernstein polynomials and hybrid Bernstein Block-Pulse functions, in conjunction with the collocation method for the numerical solution of system of Fredholm-Volterra integral equations. In both methods, the system of integral equations is approximated by the Gauss quadrature formula with respect to the Legendre weight function. The proposed methods reduce the system of integral equations to a system of algebraic equations that can be easily solved by any usual numerical methods. Moreover, the convergence analysis of these algorithms will be shown by preparing some theorems. numerical experiments are presented to show the superiority and efficiency of proposed methods in comparison with some other well known methods. Sparse PDE for SAR image speckle suppression

Speckle suppression is extremely important for understanding and utilising synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, while the emphasis of the traditional methods for speckle suppression is usually focused on removing the noise instead of keeping the scattering character of imaging objects, which has caused serious interference to the subsequent applications of SAR images. The authors aim to develop sparse partial differential equation (PDE) for speckle suppression of SAR image, where the PDE model is associated with the sparse prior of objects and the statistical property of speckle. The PDE model has been proved to have the ability of denoising and edge-preserving by proper design, and the sparse prior of the point- and line-like objects on SAR images has been also illustrated, both of which help for keeping the scattering characters. To solve the proposed sparse PDE model, a numerical algorithm is designed and the sparse constraint is realised in each step of the diffusion process. In experiments, several real SAR images are utilised to validate the performance of the proposed method.

Analysis on radiation of antenna mounted on perfectly conducting convex surfaces by using NURBS-UTD method

This paper studies the use of NURBS-UTD method in analyzing radiation of antenna set on perfectly conducting convex surfaces. The electromagnetic ray path is traced by numerical algorithm built from parametric domain in order to take advantage of the mapping definition for parametric surfaces. The presented algorithm can be applied to arbitrary shaped surfaces and provide accurate and stable geometrical parameters to calculation of electromagnetic fields afterwards. The algorithm is verified by cylinder on which analytical solution of ray path is available and good agreement is achieved by comparison. Radiation patterns of antennas mounted on arbitrary shaped surfaces are calculated and compared to commercial software to testify the accuracy and ability of the presented method. Evaluated by RMS error, the deviation between the presented method and commercial software is about 1dB.

During the parameter properties tests of the ultrasonic nondestructive flaw detector, signal processing will be interfered by two factors, namely, interference from external devices and the random noise results from the collecting process by the card collection. In this parameter properties tests, it use wavelet transform. This is due to the fact that the former one's frequency division ability as well as its local analysis ability can efficiently eliminate random disturbance, thereby ensuring the high frequency component in the effective wave, and further we can restore the signal effectively through reconstruction. In the purpose of improving accuracy, the apply of the method of the numerical algorithm is recommended during the work next to data preprocessing. The application of curve-fitting makes testing results more accurate.
