A wide range of engineering applications use optimization techniques as part of their solution process. The researcher uses specialized software that implements well-known optimization techniques to solve his problem. However, when it comes to develop original optimization techniques that fit a particular problem the researcher has no option but to implement his own new method from scratch. This leads to large development times and error prone code that, in general, will not be reused for any other application. In this work, we present a novel methodology that simplifies, speeds up and improves the development process of scientific software. This methodology guides us on the identification of design patterns. The application of this methodology generates reusable, flexible and high quality scientific software. Furthermore, the produced software becomes a documented tool to transfer the knowledge on the development process of scientific software. We apply this methodology for the design of an optimization framework implementing Newton's type methods which can be used as a fast prototyping tool of new optimization techniques based on Newton's type methods. The abstraction, re-useability and flexibility of the developed framework is measured by means of Martin's metric. The results indicate that the developed software is highly reusable.

A comparison of object-triple mapping libraries

Domain-independent information systems like ontology editors provide only limited usability for non-experts when domain-specific linked data need to be created. On the contrary, domain-specific applications require adequate architecture for data authoring and validation, typically using the object-oriented paradigm. So far, several software libraries mapping the RDF model (representing linked data) to the object model have been introduced in the literature. In this paper, we develop a novel framework for comparison of object-triple mapping solutions in terms of features and performance. For feature comparison, we designed a set of qualitative criteria reflecting object-oriented application developer's needs. For the performance comparison, we introduce a benchmark based on a real-world information system that we implemented using one of the compared object-triple mapping (OTM) solutions - JOPA. We present a detailed evaluation of a selected set of OTM libraries, showing how they differ in terms of features. We further narrow down the set of selected OTM libraries to contain only RDF4J-compatible ones and use the benchmark to measure their time and memory efficiency.

Parallel-in-Time object-oriented Electromagnetic Transient Simulation of Power Systems

Parallel-in-time methods are emerging to accelerate the solution of time-consuming problems in different research fields. However, the complexity of power system component models brings challenges to realize the parallel-in-time power system electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation, including the traveling wave transmission lines. This paper proposes a system-level parallel-in-time EMT simulation method based on traditional nodal analysis and the Parareal algorithm. A new interpretation scheme is proposed to solve the transmission line convergence problem. To integrate different kinds of traditional EMT models, a component-based EMT system solver architecture is proposed to address the increasing model complexity. An object-oriented C++ implementation is proposed to realize the parallel-in-time Parareal algorithm based on the proposed architecture. The results on the IEEE-118 test system show 2.30x speed-up compared to the sequential algorithm under the same accuracy with 6 CPU threads, and a high parallel efficiency around 40%. The performance comparison of various IEEE test cases shows that the system's time-domain characteristics determine the speed-up of Parareal algorithm, and the delays in transmission lines significantly affect the performance of parallel-in-time power system EMT simulations.

Multi-model probabilistic analysis of the lifecycle cost of buildings

Estimates of the environmental impacts of constructing and operating buildings are critical for improving the sustainability of construction. To identify the best design, a holistic approach is necessary, considering emissions, energy use, direct costs, potential earthquake costs, etc. Accordingly, this paper addresses a multitude of lifecycle impacts associated with the manufacturing, construction, operations, damage, and demolition of buildings. All impacts are translated into a common utility, measured in dollars. A collection of cost models is developed, and detailed building models are created from BIM, i.e., building information modelling. A comprehensive analysis is conducted for a six-story building. Results show that the steel material option results in the lowest construction cost. The wood option results in the lowest cost of emissions, while the concrete option contributes the most to climate change. Earthquake damage accounts for about 3% of the total expected cost, but the worst-case earthquake cost exceeds the building value.

Using Variation Theory as a Guiding Principle in an OOP Assisted Syntax Correction Learning System

object-oriented programming skill is important for the software professionals. It has become a mandatory course in information science and computer engineering departments of universities. However, it is hard for novice learners to understand the syntax and semantics of the language while learning object-oriented programming, and that makes them feel frustrated. The purpose of this study is to build an object-oriented programming assistant system that gives syntax error feedback based the variation theory. We established the syntax correction module on the basis of the Virtual Teaching Assistant (VTA). While compiling codes, the system will display syntax errors, if any, with feedbacks that are designed according to the variation theory in different levels (the generation, contrast, separation, and fusion levels) to help them correcting the errors. The experiment design of this study splits the participants, who are university freshmen, into two groups by the S-type method based on the result of a mid-term test. The learning performances and questionnaires were used for surveying, followed by in-depth interviews, to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed assistant system. The findings indicate that the learners in the experimental group achieved better learning outcomes than their counterparts in the control group. This can also prove that the strategy of using the variation theory in implementing feedback for object-oriented programming is effective.

Energy management system for residential buildings based on fuzzy logic: design and implementation in smart-meter

Advances in distributed generation and increased contribution of renewable energy source (RES) require development of smart grid technologies. Smart metering systems, as a part of smart grid technologies, in cooperation with modern buildings equipped with building management system allows for improvement of energy efficiency. It is possible to partially cover the power demand of a building from the local RESs. However, in order to ensure maximum added value, energy management system (EMS) is essential. This article presents the project and practical implementation of an EMS implemented in smart-meter. The designed system is based on an original algorithm using fuzzy logic. The rule base was created in FCL language and the implementation was carried out in C++ with the object-oriented programming (OOP). For the efficiency rating indicator, peak-to-average ratio (PAR) was selected. This ratio depending on the daily load profile decreased within a range from 15 to 54%, and the average value was 30%. The proposed energy management algorithm helps to reduce energy consumption at peak demand by 34%, with the total reduction of energy consumption during the day of 7%. The described solution demonstrates a potential for real implementation and was tested in hardware.

The Early History of F#

This paper describes the genesis and early history of the F# programming language. I start with the origins of strongly-typed functional programming (FP) in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. During the same period, Microsoft was founded and grew to dominate the software industry. In 1997, as a response to Java, Microsoft initiated internal projects which eventually became *** programming framework and the C# language. From 1997 the worlds of academic functional programming and industry combined at Microsoft Research, Cambridge. The researchers engaged with the company through Project 7, the initial effort to bring multiple languages ***, leading to the initiation *** Generics in 1998 and F# in 2002. F# was one of several responses by advocates of strongly-typed functional programming to the lobject-oriented tidal wavez of the mid-1990s. The development of the core features of F# 1.0 happened from 2004-2007, and I describe the decision-making process that led to the lproductizationz of F# by Microsoft in 2007-10 and the release of F# 2.0. The origins of F#'s characteristic features are covered: object programming, quotations, statically resolved type parameters, active patterns, computation expressions, async, units-of-measure and type providers. I describe key developments in F# since 2010, including F# 3.0-4.5, and its evolution as an open source, cross-platform language with multiple delivery channels. I conclude by examining some uses of F# and the influence F# has had on other languages so far.

Exploring a non-existent city via historical GIS system by the example of the Jewish district 'Podzamcze' in Lublin (Poland)

The historical geoportal of Lublin created by the "Grodzka Gate - NN Theatre" Centre is probably the first thematic portal using object-oriented spatiotemporal databases for presenting historical data in Poland. Authors discuss the theoretical and methodical basis of historical GIS system function and present the example of executed implementation - the interactive map of the non-existent Jewish district 'Podzamcze' in Lublin (***/miejsca/mapa/lublin-podzamcze-czwartek). The application gives access to archival collection of documents as well as to the catalogue of events, places and people connected with the former Jewish district. Integration of genealogical databases, gazetteers, old maps/city plans and collections of archival documents with API Google Maps allows to discover the city independently and comparing historical events in historically accurate space along with the present one. openVFIFE: An object-oriented Structure Analysis Platform Based on Vector Form Intrinsic Finite Element Method

The vector form intrinsic finite (VFIFE) method is a new and promising structural analysis technique that has many advantages as compared with the conventional finite element method (FEM) in analyzing the complex behaviors of a structure. However, despite the popularization of its application in civil and infrastructure engineering, there is no available unified general analysis framework for it, which limits the applications and developments of VFIFE. This work develops and implements a platform (termed openVFIFE) based on a new proposed object-oriented framework to facilitate the development and application of the vector form intrinsic finite method as well as the efficient and accurate analyses of complex behaviors for civil structures. To validate the platform, a series of numerical examples are conducted. Furthermore, to extend the applications of VFIFE, the nonlinear dynamic and collapse processes of a transmission tower under earthquake load are studied using openVFIFE. The results of these numerical examples simulated by the developed truss or beam elements are consistent with theoretical solutions, previous research or conventional finite element models. The failure modes of the transmission tower under earthquake load simulated by the platform is consistent with those observed in real cases. In addition, the results of nonlinear dynamic analyses of the transmission tower show that the computational efficiency of the proposed platform is 6-10 times higher than that of the conventional finite element method. The results provide sufficient evidence to prove the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed platform in the static, dynamic and elastoplastic analyses of truss and frame structures, especially in the structure analysis characterized by strong geometry nonlinearity. An Abaqus plugin for efficient damage initiation hotspot identification in large-scale composite structures with repeated features

Identifying the hotspots for damage initiation in large-scale composite structure designs presents a significant challenge due to the high modelling cost. For most industrial applications, the finite element (FE) models are often coarsely meshed with shell elements and used to predict the global stiffness and internal loads. Because of the lack of detailed descriptions for the composite materials and 3D stress states, most of the established failure criteria are not applicable. In this work we present an Abaqus plugin tool which implements a framework to identify the hotspots by using a pre-computed database generated for specific, heavily-repeated feature types based on a given structural model. Developed with an object-oriented implementation in Python, this software is split into two main parts, specifically for feature generation and structural analysis. The pre-computed model presents a full 3D description for the considered feature and works as a submodel to the coarse structure model driven by a one-way transfer of the boundary conditions. The presented framework is an analysis tool for efficient sizing of large-scale composite structures, as it enables 3D damage analysis of the structures in critical zones with significant savings of the modelling and computational cost. The results are compared with conventional FE modelling and satisfactory agreement is observed. In addition, the software also enables the pre-computed database to be stored in an HDF5 data file for further reuse on new structures with the same feature.
