Formal modelling of a sheet metal smart manufacturing system by using Petri nets and first-order predicate logic

This study introduces a developed method to a smart computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system, where layout design, process planning, and comprehensive computerized numerical control (CNC) code generation can be implemented to satisfy laser cutting holes, tapping, irregular and complicated profile processing, engraving, and burr back-scraping. The smart CAD/CAM(SCAM) system is developed as a commercial software product or application and firstly applied to flexible sheet metal machining center (BGL 130R). In this study, a formal modeling method involving Petri nets and first-order predicate logic is proposed to develop the smart manufacturing system. High-level Petri nets are employed to achieve the formal application architecture design of data flow for various functions, and the first-order logic used to represent the process plan is defined and deduced according to the machining methods. The developed system possesses the following characteristics: (1) a sound and complete deductive system to implement various types of trajectory planning, automatic generation, and validation of the CNC code;(2) a convenient design input environment and readiness for re-design and modification by adding specific design functions and using standard design procedures on a widely used CAD/CAM package;(3) helpful for designers in sheet metal layout designing, layout interference detection, process planning validation, preprocess manufacturing operation of CNC code generation, and autodefinition of storable file names;and (4) formal and simple in human-computer interaction, automatic and intelligent in process operations, and satisfactory in terms of the requirements of the flexible sheet metal machining center (BGL 130R).

An Approach to Detect Structural Development Defects in object-oriented Programs

Structural development defects essentially refer to code structure that violates object-oriented design principles. They make program maintenance challenging and deteriorate software quality over time. Various detection approaches, ranging from traditional heuristic algorithms to machine learning methods, are used to identify these defects. Ensemble learning methods have strengthened the detection of these defects. However, existing approaches do not simultaneously exploit the capabilities of extracting relevant features from pre-trained models and the performance of neural networks for the classification task. Therefore, our goal has been to design a model that combines a pre-trained model to extract relevant features from code excerpts through transfer learning and a bagging method with a base estimator, a dense neural network, for defect classification. To achieve this, we composed multiple samples of the same size with replacements from the imbalanced dataset MLCQ1. For all the samples, we used the CodeT5-small variant to extract features and trained a bagging method with the neural network Roberta Classification Head to classify defects based on these features. We then compared this model to RandomForest, one of the ensemble methods that yields good results. Our experiments showed that the number of base estimators to use for bagging depends on the defect to be detected. Next, we observed that it was not necessary to use a data balancing technique with our model when the imbalance rate was 23%. Finally, for blob detection, RandomForest had a median MCC value of 0.36 compared to 0.12 for our method. However, our method was predominant in Long Method detection with a median MCC value of 0.53 compared to 0.42 for RandomForest. These results suggest that the performance of ensemble methods in detecting structural development defects is dependent on specific defects.

Development of object-oriented PIC Code for Simulation of Plasma Flow Around a Satellite in Solar Corona

This paper introduces a new plasma-surface interaction simulation program called Solar Corona Spacecraft Interaction (SCSI). The program's main focus is to keep modularity and generality in its implementation. For this purpose, SCSI was programmed with an object-oriented approach, composed of a set of numerical methods organised in classes and a main file that connects them in order for the simulation to run. The program also contains a system of embedded meshes. These meshes run almost independently and allow the user to execute different numerical methods in different regions of the domain. The program is tested by simulating the interaction of a satellite with the solar wind at a distance of 8.5 R-circle dot from the surface of the Sun. Results exhibited good agreement between SCSI and previous codes and demonstrated the capability of the program to capture the main physical phenomena present in plasma-surface systems.

HERAS: A Modular Matlab Tool Using Physical Optics for the Analysis of Reflector Antennas

HERAS is a tool developed in Matlab for the analysis of reflector antennas using physical optics (PO) theory. Its graphical user interface (GUI) and source code are freely available for educational and research purposes. It has the necessity of being a flexible tool to provide adaptability to system engineering requirements and can also be of interest to antenna engineers working on the design of reflector antennas. Due to the increasing demand of broadband services, satellite communications systems are becoming highly complex in order to meet connectivity requirements. To fully exploit the benefits of these systems, multidimensional optimisations are crucial, which call for an efficient estimation of the coverage characteristics. Reflector-based solutions are one of the preferred architectures for very high-throughput satellite (VHTS) systems. A detailed description of HERAS is presented in this paper which has been validated with available commercial software packages. In addition, some examples are described in which the tool has been used for the efficient estimation of VHTS systems performance.

Seismo-VLAB: An open-source finite element software for seismic meso-scale simulations

We present Seismo-VLAB (SVL), a new open-source, object-oriented finite element software designed to optimize meso-scale simulations in the context of structural and geotechnical engineering. To this end, state-of-the-art tools and parallel computing capabilities required for efficient modeling of soil- structure interaction and wave propagation in heterogeneous half-spaces are included. For example, perfectly matched layer, domain reduction method, dynamic nonlinear solvers, cutting edge parallel linear system solvers, domain decomposition method, and a series of plasticity models are some of the features available in SVL. In this work, we present the numerical implementation and software structure so enthusiastic developers can contribute to this open-source project and showcase some software capabilities using an illustrative example. A mapping study of language features improving object-oriented design patterns

Context: object-oriented programming design patterns are well-known in the industry and taught in universities as part of software engineering curricula. Many primary studies exist on the impact of design patterns on software, in addition to secondary studies summarizing these publications. Some primary studies have proposed new language features and used them to re-implement design patterns as a way to show improvements. While secondary studies exist, they mainly focus on measuring the impact of design patterns on software. objectives: We performed a systematic mapping study to catalogue language features in the literature claiming to improve object-oriented design patterns implementations, as well as how primary studies measure these improvements. Methods: We performed a search in three databases, yielding a total of 874 papers, from which we obtained 34 relevant papers. We extracted and studied data about the language features claiming to improve design patterns implementations, the most often cited design patterns, the measures used to assess the improvements, and the case studies and experiments with which these improvements were studied. Results: Using the results, we catalogue 18 language features claimed in the literature to improve design patterns and categorize them into paradigms. We find that some design patterns are more prevalent than others, such as Observer and Visitor. Measures related to code size, code scattering and understandability are preferred. Case studies are done in-vitro, and experiments are rare. Conclusion: This catalogue is useful to identify trends and create a road map for research on language features to improve object-oriented design patterns. Considering the prevalence of design patterns, improving their implementation and adding language features to better solve their underlying concerns is an efficient way to improve object-oriented programming. Energy efficiency of the Visitor Pattern: contrasting Java and C plus plus implementations

Design patterns are applied frequently during software evolution in order to make the software more flexible and amenable to extension. One little-studied aspect of design patterns is their propensity to increase run-time energy consumption due to the indirection and additional structure they introduce. In this paper we study the impact of the Visitor pattern on energy efficiency. The Visitor pattern separates an algorithm from the objects it acts upon and improves maintainability by placing each algorithm within a single visitor class. This is at the cost of increased indirection due to the double dispatch required when the algorithm is invoked. We experimentally investigate the energy impact of varying the implementation of this pattern, and of removing the pattern entirely from software written in Java and C++. In our results we observe energy consumption reductions greater than 7% in a Java-based textbook example when the pattern is implemented using reflective dispatch, and reductions of over 10% when experimenting with an open source Java project, JavaParser. The complete removal of the pattern yields more complex results, with little impact in the textbook example but reductions of over 7% in the JavaParser study. To explore the generalisability of our findings, we subsequently apply the same transformations to the C++ based CppParser. Total pattern removal here sees energy consumption reductions of over 66% while the reflective dispatch approach increases energy consumption by up to 2012%. Our results highlight the energy savings that can be achieved when the Visitor pattern is removed both in Java and C++ implementations, and also show that some language specific features can allow for further energy savings when the implementation of the pattern is varied.

The present work demonstrates the mechanisms, programming design choices and paradigms of developing an Android-hacked online turn-based social game application. Each step of the programming process is detailed, and the underlying implemented concepts and reasonings for the different modules are explained using the Model View Controller architectural pattern. Software engineering design choices are compared and exemplified at each stage of the development phases, giving suggestions for improving the logic behind such a distributed service. This paper also shortly presents insights on the usage of an online cloud database (Firebase, from Google) in order to handle player data in real-time using JSON format.

In object-oriented programming languages, objects with polymorphic attributes can negatively impact performance and hinder static analysis. These attributes require dynamic dispatch, which is slower than static binding, and complicate the analysis process. We propose a novel algorithm for object specialization that addresses this issue by replacing polymorphic attributes with monomorphic ones, resulting in improved performance and simplified static analysis. Our algorithm is a new approach compared to existing function specialization algorithms. We provide a proof of the algorithm’s soundness and correctness, and present an implementation of the algorithm as a software tool. Empirical evaluation shows that our approach achieves significant improvements in performance and simplifies the static analysis process. Our algorithm can be applied to a variety of object-oriented languages such as Java and Python.
