Buried ridge stripe (BRS) structures, consisting of a 250-mu-m long active region and a 1300-mu-m long passive waveguide, exhibit 25 mA threshold current, 60% coupling coefficient and an optical output power in excess of 5 mW.

The butt-coupling loss between different tapered rectangular waveguides and a standard single-mode optical fiber has been calculated. Losses as low as 0.16 dB can be reached for waveguides with a refractive-index contrast in the range of 0.5% to 1.96%. The fabrication tolerances are such that practical devices with coupling losses below 0.25 dB are feasible.

UV written holographic gratings in hydrogenated GeO2-SiO2 planar waveguides which have given a reflectivity of 13dB at 1555 nm with a bandwidth of 0.6 nm are reported. The index modulation within the gratings was calculated to be 5 x 10(-4). In addition the waveguides are low loss from 1300 to 1600 nm.

Photoluminescence studies of low-loss SiON waveguides deeply (2.8MeV) implanted with erbium at concentrations up to 1atm.% are reported. Rapid thermal annealing at 900 degrees C is found to repair most of the implantation damage and results in a 5.3ms I-4(13/2) lifetime for 0.25atm.% Er concentration. Measurements in 1atm.% doped samples show significant erbium ion-ion interactions.

We demonstrate the integration, in a single glass substrate, of a 1.48/1.55-mum-wavelength multiplexer and a 1.30/1.55-mum-wavelength multiplexer followed by a 1/8 splitter by using potassium- and silver-double-ion-exchange processes. The wavelength multiplexers are based on nonsymmetric three-port Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and symmetrical Y junctions are used for achromatic splitting. The facet-to-facet excess loss in both the 1.48/1.55-mum multiplexer and in the integrated 1.30/1.55-mum multiplexer and 1/8 splitter is less than 2.7 dB. The device can be used, in connection with an erbium-doped fiber, in future wavelength division multiplexing subscriber networks in which amplification is needed in the 1.55-mum-wavelength region.

The inversion method offers high reproducibility and is suitable for fabrication of quasiphase-matching waveguide SHG devices. A prototype device was fabricated and SHG was demonstrated using a CW-YAG laser.

A novel partially corrupted waveguide laser diode (PC-LD) for subcarrier multiplexing was proposed. High yield characteristics for low distortion specification (IMD3 less-than-or-equal-to -80dBc) were demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. This is attributed to the electric field uniformity improvement along the cavity and the grating facet phase insensitivity in the PC-LD.
