The authors demonstrate the first field-induced guide/antiguide modulators (FIGAMs) on InP-based materials. Good electrical isolation between electrodes was obtained by implanting through the quaternary waveguide and 15dB on/off ratio has been achieved. Photoluminescence spectroscopy studies of low energy erbium and erbium/oxygen-implanted silicon-nitride waveguides are compared. Emission spectra show peaks at 1533 and 1548 nm. The optimum annealing temperature is determined to be 1175-degrees-C, yielding lifetimes up to 7 ms and a several decade intensity increase. Er implantation yields more than 40% longer lifetime and higher intensity than Er/O.

In contrast to previous BPM results, the presented behaviour of loss against wavelength agrees with known experimental and analytical results. A new nondestructive technique for the determination of the depth of the proton exchanged (PE) layer in LiNbO3 is reported. The techniques relies on the difference in phase of measured pyroelectric voltages, induced by a modulated laser beam incident on the exchanged and unexchanged regions. Measurements of PE layer thickness in a Z-cut LiNbO3 sample have been corroborated by prevalent, more elaborate, optical characterisation techniques.

A single-transverse-mode erbium-doped glass waveguide laser operating at a wavelength of 1.53 mum is described. The erbium-doped GeO2-SiO2 core of the waveguide was made by electron-beam vapour deposition and patterned by reactive ion etching on a quartz glass substrate. The core was 10 mum wide, 8 mum high and 64.5 mm long, which permitted single-transverse-mode laser oscillation. The threshold pump power for CW oscillation was 150 approximately 200 mW at a pumping wavelength of 0.98 mum.

A theoretical index model for the extraordinary refractive index increase in proton-exchanged LiTaO3 is presented. The index change is caused by two factors: the change in spontaneous polarisation and the change due to the photoelastic effect caused by the lattice volume expansion. Close agreement is obtained between quantitative calculation based on the proposed model and experiment data.

On the basis of concepts presented on the structure of glass considered favorable for complete ion exchange of monovalent cations in the 'glass-salt melt' system, a composition of alkaline multicomponent phosphate glass has been proposed, which is effective in speeding the process of interdiffusion of alkaline cations. The glass of composition, Me2O-RxOy-P2O5 where Me2O = Na2O + K2O and RxOy = B2O3 + ZrO2 + Nb2O3 + Al2O3 + SiO2 + Nd2O3 (formula unit) has been chosen as the initial one for ion exchange. During the ion exchange, gradient diffusion layers up to 1.7 mm thick hale been obtained in 8 h from a molten mixture of Li2SO4 and Li2MoO4, at temperatures above the glass transition temperature over the flat surface of a sample: the increase of the refractive index in the layer was equal to 0.027 +/- 0.002. It is shown that the finite difference method may be extended to study the propagation characteristics of opticalwaveguides whose cross-sections contain regions of complex local refractive index, representing gain or loss. Complex propagation constants are calculated for a range of stripe geometry laser structures and compared with those obtained from other methods. When used in conjunction with a simultaneous finite difference solution of the carrier rate equation, the complex opticalwaveguide method provides a powerful self-consistent laser model.

Polarisation-independent propagation losses of 0.2dB/cm are reported for near-infrared silica-on-silicon channel guides formed using sol-gel borophosphosilicate glass deposited by repetitive spin coating and rapid thermal annealing. The low loss is ascribed to a reduction in process temperature, which has allowed a total glass thickness of 30 mu m. The use of two dopants allows the glass viscosity to be adjusted independently of its refractive index, simplifying reflow and burial.
