A diode-pumped planar Er/Yb waveguide laser is demonstrated. The device was fabricated by thallium exchange in a phosphorus-free silicate glass. Lasing was achieved at 1544 nm with a threshold of 5 mW and a slope efficiency of 2%. The low threshold indicates the absence of the severe backtransfer effects previously reported in Er/Yb bulk laser silicate glasses.

The reverse proton-exchange (RPE) process performed in different HxLi1-xNbO3 crystalline phases of proton-exchanged and annealed proton-exchanged LiNbO3 waveguides leads to remarkable optical and compositional modifications. Analysis of ordinary and extraordinary index profiles, correlated with concentration depth profiles in RPE samples subjected to different exchange and postexchange treatments, shows how buried-index opticalwaveguides in LiNbO3 with symmetric mode and reduced fiber-waveguide coupling losses can be realized. Photoinduced second harmonic generation (SHG) in silica-based channel waveguides fabricated on Si substrates is described. The SHG efficiency was estimated quantitatively in GeO2-doped silica waveguides under various seeding conditions. Moreover, SHG was observed in TiO2-doped silica opticalwaveguides for the first time.

The far-field pattern of a broad area laser has been improved by placing passive, low-loss slab waveguides on either side of the active region. Two types of laser were investigated: first, control devices (75 mu m x 300 - 500 mu m) with threshold currents of 200 - 250mA and a broad far-field spectrum (10 degrees) exhibiting several peaks;secondly, lasers with passive slab waveguides on both sides of the active region which exhibited a single peak in the far-field spectrum, the divergence of which decreased as the length of the passive sections was increased. The threshold current increased with increasing length of passive section, being typically 300 mA when the total length of the passive regions was 400 mu m.

The Letter describes the fabrication and properties of opticalwaveguides formed in Y-cut LiTaO3 by simultaneous processing of zinc-lithium, proton-lithium and zinc-proton exchange in the melts K2SO4-Na2SO4-ZnSO4-LiSO4-KHSO4 at 540-degrees-C. A surface increase of the refractive index of 0.14 was observed for the extraordinary polarisation and 0.11 for the ordinary polarisation. The dynamics of the Process is discussed.

A waveguide with SiOxNyHz core glass film and its fabrication method have been developed that can realise a high refractive index difference-DELTA to reduce the cost and size of the device. DELTA can be increased by approximately 7% by controlling the nitrogen concentration. This SiOxNyHz film is deposited on a quartz glass substrate with face down type of plasma CVD method. The warp of the substrate formed by SiOxNyHz core glass film is very small compared with that of conventional core glass film. The core side roughness on patterning of the core glass film in the dry-etching process is also very small. The plasma CVD method can suppress the growth of particles on deposited film. A reduction in the cost and size of the guided-wave type component can be expected by using the SiOxNyHz core glass.

We develop a chemical modification-free process for fabrication of patterned photonic crystals (PhCs) of inverse opal structure. This process, involving photolithography, colloidal assembly, and electrochemical deposition, is potentially applicable for fabrication of practical optical devices. Polystyrene (PS) spheres were self-assembled onto pre-patterned substrates to serve as the sacrificial template. This template was then converted into a patterned inverse opal structure with selective electrochemical deposition. The thickness of the inverse opal structure can be easily controlled by adjusting the time of electrodeposition. We demonstrated the process with fabrication of a T-shape structure surrounded by an inverse opal structure of titania. Titania was chosen here as a representative demonstration material, and the process can be readily applied to other materials of desired characteristics.
