Reflection SHG measurements with fundamental wavelength 532 nm have been carried out on proton-exchanged LiTaO3 waveguides. The SH signal decreased exponentially with waveguide thickness. The result is interpreted as a strongly reduced nonlinearity in the proton-exchanged layer. An increased signal was observed from annealed samples.

Strong intermodal discrimination is demonstrated for antiguided diode-laser arrays designed to operate in a resonant condition for the inphase mode. These resonant-optical-waveguide (ROW) arrays radiate in a diffraction-limited beam up to 1.5 W under pulsed operation and 360 mW under CW operation, without need for active phase control.

A singlemode opticalwaveguide has been developed with a high refractive index difference DELTA of 2% and low loss of 0.12 dB/cm at 1.3 mum wavelength. This waveguide consists of buffer layer, core ridge, and cladding layer of SiO(x)N(y)H(z) formed by the plasma CVD method at a low temperature of 270-degrees-C. The absorption loss which is affected by the OH ion content at 1.39 mum wavelength can be decreased by annealing at 500-degrees-C under N2 atmosphere. The fabrication process at low temperature is effectively used for the monolithic integration of photonic/electronic circuits.

PolYMers subjected to ion beam or gamma irradiation undergo structural modifications, which lead to an increase in refractive index for some materials, such as poly(diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate)) (CR39) and polycarbonate. The refractive index variation achieved with ion beam irradiation is sufficient to produce opticalwaveguides in CR39. The waveguide losses have been systematically studied in order to apply this technique to integrated optics (microstructure fabrication). A fundamental study using various spectroscopic methods (i.r. and u.v.-visible) has also been carried out, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the structural modifications of polymeric materials caused by irradiation.

The attenuation characteristics of a metal-clad planar opticalwaveguide polarizer are-computed by a modified finite-difference beam propagation method, taking into consideration the complex refractive indices of the metals used and the vector characteristics of the guided mode. Numerical results for practical opticalwaveguide refractive-index profiles such as the step and Gaussian distributions are presented. The method should find applications in the design of metal-clad opticalwaveguide polarizers and other lossy waveguide devices with arbitrary refractive-index profiles and can be easily expanded to three-dimensional cases.

A versatile design for the vertical coupling between stacked ARROW-B waveguides is proposed and demonstrated. This structure uses a crossing configuration and has large tolerance against the lateral offset of the stacked waveguides. Over 90% coupling efficiencies for both TE and TM polarisations have been achieved.
