A METEOROLOGICAL DATA-ACQUISITION SYSTEM FOR ATMOSPHERIC PROPAGATION STUDIES

Instrumentation for studying the propagation of near-millimeter waves has been designed and implemented at 1-mile-long test site in Sandusky, OH. Measurements of the atmospheric structure functions and the transverse wind velocity along the propagation path is accomplished with a custom-built meteorological data-acquisition network consisting of six towers linked together with fiber-optic data lines. Each tower is microprocessor controlled and includes a three-axis anemometer, a Lyman-alpha hydrometer, and a differential temperature probe, with other meteorological parameters obtained at various locations along the path. A modified ISO-osi reference model is used as the controlling protocol.

The CCITT X.400 Series of Recommendations on Message Handling Systems (MHS) define a distributed message exchange model aiming towards the development of an international mail network by interconnecting public and private networks worldwide. The essential functional components of the MHS model are the User Agents (UAs) and the Message Transfer Agents (MTAs) . Users of the MHS — originators and recipients of messages — request its services through a UA which in turn interacts with the Message Transfer System (MTS). QK-MHS/VM , is an electronic mail system developed at Queen's University under the IBM VM/SP operating system, and is based on the CCITT Recommendations. Design and implementation issues in the development of a remote UA model on a personal computer to be connected to QK-MHS/VM are surveyed in this paper.

Application programs access Open System Interconnection services through a Programmatic Interface. This Programmatic Interface should be made available to users of high level languages most commonly used for programming applications. This paper presents a Cobol oriented programmatic interface giving access to the Presentation Virtual Terminal Services of CII-HB and HIS Distributed Systems Architecture, DSA, which is built in accordance with ISO reference model for osi. The virtual terminal model used is described in terms of presentation objects and their attributes, as well as the operations performed on these objects. A correspondance is given between this model and the COBOL communication model.

Telecommunication systems have gone through tremendous changes in the past few decades and gained a special place in our daily lives at work and at home. This has been possible, among others, thanks to the Open Systems Interconnect (osi) model by International Standardization Organization, which provides a simple, structured, and flexible abstract model to represent complex telecommunication systems by dividing them into seven layers and their interfaces. Although, this approach has been instrumental in definition of basic architecture and components in telecommunications, it has at the same time compartmented problems into rather isolated islands, which at best take into account some considerations of their neighboring layers in their design for solutions in each layer. With recent progress of user-centric, dependable, and secure multimedia communications and the maturity of the osi to cope with multimedia solutions and services, it is time to revisit this fundamental way of looking into telecommunication systems and to seek for a more holistic and end-to-end architectures that go beyond the limitations of osi model.

To satisfy the severe requirements involved in future communication networks, commercial and research interest in the applicability of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is growing. However, since WDM is merely concerned with transmitting bits over optical fibers, full advantage can only be taken when WDM is efficiently supported by hi.-her-layer protocols. Functionality of higher-layer protocols that could be used in conjunction with WDM originates from synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) or synchronous optical network (SONET), asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), and the internet protocol (IP). To provide flexible use of services with different levels of quality, various higher-layer protocols may directly support WDM simultaneously by reserving wavelength channels for a specific supporting protocol. Focussing on aspects of network management, this paper investigates how the mentioned higher-layer protocols may concurrently support WDM.

This paper outlines a methodological approach for a study of the game playing process in an educational RPG (Role Playing Game). Such a game was developed, based on the theme of the osi model of Computer Networking, and used to teach this concept to university level computing students who usually find the topic difficult to understand The overall aim was to examine how gameplay experiences could inform the process of learning: a Grounded Theory approach influenced the methodology of data collection and analysis and provided a framework for gameplay description and interpretation.

ZigBee and IEEE 802.15.4 are standard-based protocols that provide the network infrastructure required for wireless network applications. The IEEE defines the Physical (PHY) and Medium Access Protocol (MAC) layers in its standards. For ZigBee, an alliance of companies worked to develop specifications for stack profiles, which define network, application services and security parameters for the entire network. The stack profile is selected by the ZigBee coordinator and is chosen on the basis of application areas, such as Home Control, Building Automation or Plant Control. Aiming the development of a commercial ZigBee product for Home Control, in this paper we describe some important aspects of those standards and the main directives of the stack profile and network topology that have been selected for assembling first development kits, which are also presented.

Recent changes in user employment of Internet based services, new deployment technologies for mobile networks as well as an ongoing realisation of fixed and mobile converged networks e.g. the EU FP7 project COMBO, are significant examples of enablers for increasing demands on DSL links. Investigating cross-layer dependencies between all layers in the osi reference model becomes increasingly important. In this paper we present an analytical model and experimental results for the relation between impulse noise on a VDSL2 link and the effect this have on the network layer packet loss. We show how the packet loss rate is dependent not only on the disturbance signal level and periodicity but also on the link utilisation.

This paper presents a New Open Logistics Interconnection (NOLI) reference model for a Physical Internet, inspired by the Open Systems Interconnection (osi) reference model for data networks. This NOLI model is compared to the osi model, and to the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) model of Internet. It is also compared to the OLI model for a Physical Internet proposed by Montreuil. The main differences between the presented NOLI model and all the other models named above are in the appearance of definitions of physical objects in different layers and not just the lowest one. Also, the NOLI model we present locates the containerization and de-containerization operations in the topmost layer, and not in the layer below as does the OLI model. Finally, the NOLI model is closer to the TCP/IP and osi models than the OLI model, keeping the integrity of the Link Layer that the OLI model divides in two layers, and keeping separate the Session and Transport osi Layers that the OLI model unites in just one layer.
