Time-frequency-based methods are proven to be effective for parameter estimation of linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals. The smoothed pseudo Winger-Ville distribution (SPWVD) is used for the parameter estimation of multi-LFM signals, and a method of the SPWVD binarization by a dynamic threshold based on the otsu algorithm is proposed. The proposed method is effective in the demand for the estimation of different parameters and the unknown signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) circumstance. The performance of this method is confirmed by numerical simulation.

Image threshold method is an important technique for image segmentation. The maximum between-class variance of pixel (otsu) algorithm has been widely applied in the literature. However, the original otsu method for image segmentation is very time-consuming, and the segmentation results are often unstable for the image with low signal to noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, a fast image segmentation method (D3otsu-CS), decomposed three-dimensional otsu based on the technology of the cuckoo search (CS), is proposed. The proposed method starts by overcoming the complex computational by decomposing the original three-dimensional otsu into a one-dimensional otsu and a two-dimensional otsu. The cuckoo search algorithm is employed to find the optimal threshold vector by the global Levy flight searching, and the between-class variance of the two-dimensional otsu is investigated as fitness functions. The Experimental results are illustrated to show that the computation time efficiency of the proposed method is increased by about 98.6% than the 3otsu. In addition, the stability and reliability of the segmentation results by the proposed method outperform 2otsu and 3otsu.

Through-silicon via (TSV) is one of the most critical elements in 3D integration, where defects such as unfilled bottom and holes are very common. Thus, defect detection is of great importance to improve products quality. In this work, a non-destructive TSV defect detection method using X-ray imaging is introduced. Seven features representative of TSVs are extracted from the images, and then inputted into a self-organizing map (SOM) network for classification and testing. The results demonstrate that the normal TSVs and defective TSVs can be distinguished obviously by SOM network. The voids inside the TSVs are further located qualitatively using the otsu algorithm and verified by the SEM images. These prove the feasibility of X-ray inspection of TSV defects with SOM network and otsu algorithm. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An increasing number of unknown islands, an important resource for human development, is identified based on segmentation of remote sensing image. Different from traditional digital image, remote sensing image has significant characteristics, such as multi-band, multi-source, and multi-granularity. Thus, the segmentation theory based on traditional digital image is not suitable for remote sensing image. Here, the segmentation algorithm (otsu), which is a common method for traditional digital image, was improved in two aspects: (1) Based on PCA and band fusion, the otsu algorithm with one-dimensional image was extended to multi-dimensional ones;(2) By optimizing the threshold value, the otsu algorithm for single feature extraction was extended to multi-granularity extraction. Taking the island segmentation from remote sensing image as an example, the improved otsu algorithm was compared with the traditional otsu: 1) Through using PCA algorithm, multi-band remote sensing image was reduced to effective 3-4 new bands;2) Through different threshold settings, the objects in the remote sensing image are divided into different classes;3) The improved otsu algorithm reduces the computational complexity, taking the threshold value of 2 as an example, the time efficiency is improved by 42.15%.

To improve the accuracy and rapidity of pupil location in human-computer interaction, a method based on the improved otsu algorithm is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the image is pre-processed using light compensating and median filtering to calculate the maximum between-class variance of the pixels which exist in the image, and obtain the optimum threshold of the binary image. Finally, the pupil center and radius is got by using ellipse fitting. Experiment results show that the method is quite accurate and fast, which laid a great foundation for the eye tracking.

In this study, the performance analysis of the spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks is investigated with the energy detector method over Rician fading channels with the selective sampling and otsu algorithm. Here, a new method based on noise reduction using the wavelet transform is proposed. Performance analysis of the proposed system model over Rician fading channels is presented by receiver operating characteristic curves for different signal to noise ratio values. The results show that the spectrum sensing performance increases when the selective sampling and otsu algorithm are used at the receiver.

In this paper, we have proposed a robust and computationally inexpensive threefold algorithm used for the detection of moving objects in a video sequence. The adopted algorithm starts with computation of difference between images using modified temporal difference. Images differencing are calculated by subtracting two input frames, at each position of the pixel. Instead of generating image differencing using the traditional continuous approach, we have proposed to use a fixed and modified number of alternate frames centered on the current frame. This approach aims to reduce the computational complexity without compromising on image differencing quality. Object segmentation is finally performed on the refined difference image by the otsu's algorithm. The evaluation tests show that the proposed approach reaches the better performance of detection compared with other approaches.

A new voidage measurement method for gas-liquid two-phase flow based on Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT) and Ostu algorithm is studied. A 16-electrode ERT system carries out for data collection and image reconstruction. otsu algorithm is used to select the threshold adaptively and binarize the reconstructed images. According to the binarized images, the cross-sectional void fraction of gas-liquid two-phase flow is calculated. Then the average void fraction can be achieved through continuous sampling. Experiments show that the errors of the measured average void fraction values are within 8% and the method is effective.

Building change detection techniques are essential for several urban applications. In this context, multi-temporal airborne LiDAR data has been considered an effective alternative since it has some advantages over conventional photogrammetry. Despite several works in the literature, the automatic class definition with great accuracy and performance remains a challenge in change detection. The developed strategies usually explore training samples or empirical thresholds to discriminate the classes. To overcome this limitation, we proposed an automatic building change detection method based on otsu algorithm and median planarity attribute computed from eigenvalues. The main contribution corresponds to the automatic and unsupervised identification of building changes. The experiments were conducted using airborne LiDAR data from two epochs: 2012 and 2014. From qualitative and quantitative analysis, the robustness of the proposed method in detecting building changes in urban areas was evaluated, presenting completeness and correctness around 99% and 76%, respectively.

Water extraction has an important significance in flood disaster management and environmental monitoring. Compared to optical sensor, Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which has the properties of high resolution and all-weather acquisition, has been used for water extraction in this paper. Due to the presence of coherent speckles, which can be modeled as strong, multiplicative noise, water extraction in SAR image is very difficult. In order to extract water from SAR images automatically, accurately and quickly, a novel water extraction algorithm combine multi-scale level set method with otsu algorithm is proposed in this paper. Firstly, we introduced multi-scale framework into level set method. Multi-scale framework is a method considering both global information and local information of the image. The overall structural information of the image can be maintained at coarse scales and detailed information can be kept at fine scales. Therefore, coarser scale extraction results can be used as a prior guide for the finer scale, so that not only are the statistical properties of the signal-resolution image considered, but also statistical variations of multiple resolutions are exploited. Moreover, computational complexity is reduced since much of the work can be accomplished at coarse resolutions, where there are significantly fewer pixels to process. Secondly, based on the multi-scale level set framework, the segmentation result of otsu algorithm is used to represent the initial segmentation curve. Finally, in order to eliminate the influence of buildings shadow and road, post-processing is considered in this paper. The experiments with real SAR images demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method.
