object databases and object relational databases are both widely used in industries. The major differences are mainly the level of encapsulation and the language supported by individual DBMSs. object databases are fully encapsulated and allowed only the use of methods to communicate with the objects. object relational database, on the other hand allows the use of object-oriented SQL on open attributes. Both databases support the use of reference pointers and subtype hierarchies. Major software tools such as information warehouse software are now available commercially in the form of object relational representation. The purpose of this research project is to transform production-level systems on object database to object relational information warehouses.

Performance Evaluation of a Parallel Cascade Semijoin Alogrithm for Computing Path Expressions in object database Systems

With the emerging of new applications,especially in Web,Such as E-Commerce,Digital Library and DNA Bank,object database systems show their stronger funcitons than other kinds of database systems due to their powerful representation ability on complex semantics and *** distinguished feature of object database systems is path expression,and most queries on an object database ar based on path expression because it is the most natural and convenient way to access the object databse,for example,to navigate the hyper-links in a web-based database,The execution of path expression is usually extremely expensive on a very large ***,the improvement of path expression eecution efficiency is critical for the performance ofobject *** an importan approach realizing high-performance query processing ,the parallel processing of path expression on distributed object databases is explored in this *** to now,some algorithms about how to compute path expressions and how to optimize path expression processing have been proposed for ***,few approaches have been presented for computing path expressions in *** this paper,a new paralle algorithm for computing path expression named Parallel Cascade Semijoin(PCSJ)is ***,a new scheduling strategy called right-deep zigzag tree is designed to further improve the performance of the PCSJ *** exper-iments have been implemented in an NOW distributed and parallel *** results show that the PCSJ algorithm outperforms the other two parallel algorithms(the parallel version of forward pointer chasing algorithm(PFPC)and the index splitting parallel algorithm(IndexSplit) when computing path expressions with restrictive predicates and that the right-deep zigzage tree scheduling strategy has better performance than the right-deep tree scheduling strategy.

In this paper, we discuss efficient combinations of data migration processing and method migration processing in object database environments. When we have multiple servers and clients, it is practical to decide at a client which of the two ways should be adopted for performing each processing with a server for performance. TEMPOS: A platform for developing temporal applications on top of object DBMS

This paper presents TEMPOS: a set of models and languages supporting the manipulation of temporal data on top of object DBMS. The proposed models exploit object-oriented technology to meet some important, yet traditionally neglected design criteria related to legacy code migration and representation independence. Two complementary ways for accessing temporal data are offered: a query language and a visual browser. The query language, namely TEMPOQL, is an extension of OQL supporting the manipulation of histories regardless of their representations, through fully composable functional operators. The visual browser offers operators that facilitate several time-related interactive navigation tasks, such as studying a snapshot of a collection of objects at a given instant, or detecting and examining changes within temporal attributes and relationships. TEMPOS models and languages have been formalized both at the syntactical and the semantical level and have been implemented on top of an object DBMS. The suitability of the proposals with regard to applications' requirements has been validated through concrete case studies.

In the Internet era, the relational database in general use cannot be applied to some problems which should be solved. In this thesis, we describe the necessary capabilities for database management systems and compare them with the limitation of RDB. And also we introduce object database and its efficiency, which will be the new trend of the database. We use “Jasmine2000” as a concrete example of object database in business use, and are going to verify its efficiency with its applied cases. At the end, we will point the way of database's future.

Background: The explosion in biological information creates the need for databases that are easy to develop, easy to maintain and can be easily manipulated by annotators who are most likely to be biologists. However, deployment of scalable and extensible databases is not an easy task and generally requires substantial expertise in database development. Results: BioBuilder is a Zope-based software tool that was developed to facilitate intuitive creation of protein databases. Protein data can be entered and annotated through web forms along with the flexibility to add customized annotation features to protein entries. A built-in review system permits a global team of scientists to coordinate their annotation efforts. We have already used BioBuilder to develop Human Protein Reference database http://***, a comprehensive annotated repository of the human proteome. The data can be exported in the extensible markup language (XML) format, which is rapidly becoming as the standard format for data exchange. Conclusions: As the proteomic data for several organisms begins to accumulate, BioBuilder will prove to be an invaluable platform for functional annotation and development of customizable protein centric databases. BioBuilder is open source and is available under the terms of LGPL.

MOVIE: An incremental maintenance system for materialized object views

View materialization is an important technique for high performance query processing, data integration and replication. Solutions to the problem of incrementally maintaining materialized views are very relevant. So far, most work on this problem has been confined to relational settings and solutions have not been comprehensively evaluated. This paper describes MOVIE, a complete, implemented and evaluated solution to the problem of incrementally maintaining materialized OQL views in ODMG-compliant object databases. The evaluation throws light into how the effectiveness of incremental maintenance is affected by issues such as database size, and the complexity and selectivity of views. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Atomic use case: A concept for precise modelling of object-oriented information systems

We propose the concept of "atomic use case" and demonstrate how this concept can be used to bring the analysis of functional requirements of information systems to a much deeper level than usual, and ultimately to construct a precise specification of the system's functionality. Specifically, the complete functionality of an information system is defined by a set of atomic use cases, which axe consistently specified in terms of their input, output, pre- and postcondition. We also show that the usefulness of the atomic use case concept goes beyond analysis. With this concept, a characterization of the business logic layer can be clearly formulated, and this layer can be systematically extended to effectively support the construction of graphical user interface.

An approach to querying multiple object databases

In a multidatabase system which consists of object databases, a global schema created by integrating schemas of the component databases provides a uniform interface and high level location transparency to help users retrieve data. The mapping between the global and component object schemas is complicated due to schema restructuring conducted to resolve various conflicts among component schemas before conducting schema integration. This mapping information is important for global query processing. In this paper, a mapping strategy is presented. A mapping equation is defined to denote the mappings for attributes and object instances between a virtual class and its constituent classes. In addition, a Mapping graph is used to describe the mapping equation. Based on the mapping information, a mechanism for processing global queries in parallel is introduced. One processing unit is responsible for decomposing the global query into subqueries against the component databases. To handle the effects of schema restructuring, preprocessing and postprocessing units arc also provided for each local DBMS. The results returned from component databases need to be integrated. The concept of object isomerism, where a real-world entity is represented by more than one object in different component databases, is considered for integrating query results.

Efficient query processing in integrated multiple object databases with maybe result certification

Within integrated multiple object databases, missing data occurs due to the missing attribute conflict as well as the existence of null values. A set of algorithms is provided in this paper to process the predicates of global queries with missing data. For providing more informative answers to users, the maybe results due to missing data are presented in addition to the certain results. The local maybe results may become certain results via the concept of object isomerism. One algorithm is designed based on the centralized approach in which data are forwarded to the same site for integration and processing. Furthermore, for reducing response time, the localized approaches evaluate the predicates within distinct component databases in parallel. The object signature is also applied in the design to further reduce the data transfer. These algorithms are compared and discussed according to the simulation results of both the total execution and response times. Alternately, the global schema may contain multivalued attributes with values derived from attribute;values in different component databases. Hence, the proposed approaches are also extended to process the global queries involving this kind of multivalued attribute.
