This paper investigates the application of hierarchical MRASTA bottleneck (BN) features for under-resourced languages within the IARPA Babel project. Through multilingual training of Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) BN features on five languages (Cantonese, Pashto, Tagalog, Turkish, and Vietnamese), we could end up in a single feature stream which is more beneficial to all languages than the unilingual features. In the case of balanced corpus sizes, the multilingual BN features improve the automatic speech recognition (ASR) performance by 3-5% and the keyword search (KWS) by 3-10% relative for both limited (LLP) and full language packs (FLP). Borrowing orders of magnitude more data from non-target FLPs, the recognition error rate is reduced by 8-10%, and the spoken term detection is improved by over 40% relative on Vietnamese and Pashto LLP. Aiming at the fast development of acoustic models, cross-lingual transfer of multilingually "pretrained" BN features for a new language is also investigated. Without the need of any MLP training on the new language, the ported BN features performed similarly to the unilingual features on FLP and significantly better on LLP. Results also show that a simple fine-tuning step on the new language is enough to achieve comparable KWS and ASR performance to that system where the target language is also involved in the time-consuming multilingual training.

The neural network based features became an inseparable part of state-of-the-art LVCSR systems. In order to perform well, the network has to be trained on a large amount of in-domain data. With the increasing emphasis on fast development of ASR system on limited resources, there is an effort to alleviate the need of in-domain data. To evaluate the effectiveness of other resources, we have trained the Stacked Bottle-Neck neural networks structure on multilingual data investigating several training strategies while treating the target language as the unseen one. Further, the systems were adapted to the target language by re-training. Finally, we evaluated the effect of adaptation of individual NNs in the Stacked Bottle-Neck structure to find out the optimal adaptation strategy. We have shown that the adaptation can significantly improve system performance over both, the multilingual network and network trained only on target data. The experiments were performed on Babel Year 1 data.

In the IARPA sponsored program BABEL we are faced with the challenge of training automatic speech recognition systems in sparse data conditions in very little time. In this paper we show that by using multilingual bootstrapping techniques in combination with multilingual deep belief bottle neck features that are only fine tuned on the target language the training time of an LVCSR system can be essentially halved while the word error rate stays the same. We show this for recognition systems on Tagalog, making use of multilingual systems trained on the other four languages of the Babel base period: Cantonese, Pashto, Turkish, and Vietnamese.

In this paper, Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) based multilingual bottleneck features are investigated for acoustic modeling in three languages -- German, French, and US English. We use a modified training algorithm to handle the multilingual training scenario without having to explicitly map the phonemes to a common phoneme set. Furthermore, the cross-lingual portability of bottleneck features between the three languages are also investigated. Single pass recognition experiments on large vocabulary SMS dictation task indicate that (1) multilingual bottleneck features yield significantly lower word error rates compared to standard MFCC features (2) multilingual bottleneck features are superior to monolingual bottleneck features trained for the target language with limited training data, and (3) multilingual bottleneck features are beneficial in training acoustic models in a low resource language where only mismatched training data is available - by exploiting the more matched training data from other languages.

Query Intent classifier is used by a search engine to classify an online search query whether having a certain type of intent such as adult intent or commercial intent. Training such classifiers for each language is a supervised machine learning task that requires a large amount of labeled training queries. The manual annotation of training queries for each new emerging language using human judges is expensive, error-prone and time consuming. In this paper, we leverage the existing query classifiers in a source language and the abundant unlabeled queries in the query log of the underserved target language to reduce the cost and automate the training data annotation process. The most clicked search results of a query are used to predict the intent of this query instead of human judges. Document classifier is trained on hidden topics extracted by latent semantic indexing from the translation of source language documents into the target language. The experimental results, using English as the source language and Arabic as the target one, show that the proposed unsupervised method has trained support vector machines as Arabic query classifiers to detect both commercial and health intent without need for human-judged Arabic queries. The unsupervised classifiers outperform the classifiers based on direct query translation and the decision fusion of both classifier is superior.

In this paper we explore how we can use Specification and Description Language, to represent simulation models that make an intensive use of geographical information, like environmental simulation models. The purpose is to perform a complete unambiguous, graphical and formal representation of a wildfire simulation model. Specification and Description Language is a modern object oriented language that allows the definition of distributed systems. It has focused on the modeling of reactive, state/event driven systems, and has been standardized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in the Z. 100. Thanks to the graphical representation of the simulation model, the interaction between the experts that usually come from different areas is simplified. Also, due to the unambiguous and modular nature of the language, all the details of the model can be validated by personnel that do not necessarily are used with programming languages or simulation infrastructures.

The longest path search problem is important in low-level worst-case execution time analysis and implies that all program executions are exhibited and inspected, via convenient abstractions, for their timing behavior. In this paper we present a definitional program unfolder that is based on the formal executable semantics of a target language. We work with K, a rewrite-based framework for the design and analysis of programming languages. Our methodology has two phases. First, it extracts directly from the executable semantics of the language, via reachability analysis, a safe control-flow graph (CFG) approximation. Second, it unfolds the control-flow graph, using loop bounds annotations and outputs the set of all possible program executions. The two-phased definitional program unfolder is implemented using the K-Maude tool, a prototype implementation of the K framework.

Shallow-transfer rule is the main component of shallow-transfer machine translation that matches the pattern of source language and then performs required action to translate them into the target language. However, high development cost is required to build it because it needs much of linguistic knowledge. This paper focuses on the process to automatically generate the shallow-transfer rule for Indonesian-to-English that is followed with manual postediting to improve the quality of automatic rule. The result shows that the automatic transfer rule can improve the performance of the word-forword translation. Furthermore, manual postediting process was also shown to increase the quality of automatic transfer rule. According to this result, using automatic approach is an effective way to build shallow-transfer rule at starting point that can be further enhanced by performing rule post-editing.

Verb plays a crucial role of specifying the action or function performed in a sentence. In translating English to morphologically richer language like Hindi, the organization and the order of verbal constructs contributes to the fluency of the language. Mere statistical methods of machine translation are not sufficient enough to consider this aspect. Identification of verb parts in a sentence is essential for its understanding and they constitute as if they are a single entity. Considering them as a single entity improves the translation of the verbal construct and thus the overall quality of the translation. The paper describes a strategy for pre-processing and for identification of verb parts in source and target language corpora. The steps taken towards reducing sparsity further helped in improving the translation results.
