Data mining is the discovery of knowledge and useful information from the data stored in large databases. The classification of large data sets is an important problem in data mining. Most data mining algorithms cannot be applied to complex object databases unless it is converted into a single flat table. Much valuable information especially the linkages between objects could be lost by conversion of such databases into a single table. As object-oriented data models embody rich data structures and semantics in the construction of complex databases, such as complex data objects, class hierarchies, property inheritance and methods, etc. So it is important to extend the area of study from relational database systems to object-oriented database systems and investigate the mechanisms for knowledge discovery in object-oriented databases. This paper presents a brief review of some of the significant researches available in the literature for object-oriented data mining.

In object oriented scenario, inheritance is a process to make new classes by using classes that have already been defined. Inheritance helps to reuse existing code, by adding together of properties will enhance all new child objects without interfering with their existing ties. In object-oriented programming, an object is instance of class that consists of data and the methods, allows binding for them and operate on that data, stored in the memory of a running application. This paper presents a methodology of class hierarchy with the normalization in object oriented databases. CHNF (class hierarchy normal form) is good concept for implementing the normalization in class schema. The dilemma is that CHNF has not defined the levels for depth of inheritance; it is possible that CHNF base architecture invalidate the depth of inheritance and other metrics, which is defined by CK Metrics. As the database expends, heavy objects become complicated to handle. Although the more deep hierarchy tree implies that we have good reuse of code but it sound awful effects on memory and performance. For avoiding the heavy objects we have discovered a pattern CHNFP (class hierarchy normal form pattern). It follows the concept of CHNF as well as it validates the CK metrics.

In this paper, based on possibility distribution and the semantic measure of fuzzy data, we investigate subclass-superclass relationships in the fuzzy object-oriented databases. We identify fuzzy class and develop soft computing methods in the paper to quantitatively determine the fuzzy subclass-superclass hierarchies. The strategies to resolve the conflicts in multiple inheritance of class are also presented.

Aiming at distinguish objects, the concept of object comparison plays an important role in object management in object-oriented databases as well as object-oriented knowledge bases. In order to model uncertain data and complex-valued attributes as well as complex relationships among objects, fuzzy object-oriented databases have been introduced. In this paper, based on possibility distribution and the semantic measure of fuzzy data, we propose a more general way to compare fuzzy objects in the fuzzy object-oriented databases. We introduce an equivalence degree to compare fuzzy objects.

object-oriented databases (OODBs) can provide persistence for object-oriented applications without using an object-relational mapping layer. In this work, we propose a novel Self-Adjusting-granularity Locking protocol (SAML), for OODBs which has less overhead and provides better concurrency compared to some existing protocols. There is another adaptive multi-granularity protocol, AMGL, which provides the same degree of concurrency as SAML. However, our protocol significantly reduces the number of locks. Experimental results show that SAML performs best when the workload in the system is high and transactions are long-lived.

In distributed object-oriented databases(DOODB), objects are distributed in different sites on a communication network. A class fragmentation that divides a class into several fragments is needed for improving performance and for reducing repetition and duplication of data transmission. It is proposed the vertical class fragmentation to reflect the characteristics of object-oriented database such as method, inheritance and composite-object. In this paper, we define the objective function for allocation considering system to save cost including storage, query processing and communication and implemented it using genetic algorithm.

In the present day scenario of mobility and objects, the field of object oriented programming is gaining momentum not only in field of gaming, programming but also in area of DBMS. The paper discusses object oriented approach for solving queries. The queries are executed and analyzed specifically on an object oriented database DB4o. The industry is moving with time from basic models of DBMS to one such DBMS discussed in this paper. Experiments have been carried out using both DB4o and MySQL for a huge airport data base. The paper also discusses two factors namely Querying methodology and Performance analysis in comparison with traditional DBMS like MySQL. The proposed approach proves that ODBMS is more efficient compared to RDBMS.

In this paper, some unique features of fuzzy object-class relationships, which do not occur in classical object-oriented databases, are investigated. We identify direct object-class relationship, indirect object-class relationship, and arbitrary object-class relationship in fuzzy object-oriented databases. In particular, soft computing methods are developed in the paper to quantitatively determine resemblance object-class relationships. The strategies to resolve the conflicts that an object belongs to multiple classes with different membership degrees simultaneously are hereby introduced.

object oriented databases can be used for applications like CAD that require support for complex data types and long duration transactions. In object oriented databases, parallel execution of runtime requests and design time requests are allowed. This requires concurrency control mechanisms to ensure consistency of data and schema. Multi-granular lock models are favoured as they provide better concurrency while maintaining consistency. Several multi-granular lock models have been proposed to support fine granular runtime requests. But design time requests are still supported in coarse granularity. As they are parallely executed, the overall concurrency is still restrained. The proposed scheme exploits the semantics of object oriented concepts to provide fine granularity for design time requests to provide overall better performance.
