As part of our work concerning multimedia distributed applications, we have been led to develop a method and a CASE (computer aided software engineering) tool to design distributed object-oriented databases (OODBs). Firstly, we defined a top-down design method that allows us to build local conceptual schemata from a global conceptual schema. The originality of our work consists in dissociating the static aspects and the dynamic aspects that are intrinsically linked in the objects. At the logical level, the fragmentation step we propose deals only with the static schema classes and permits us to define mixed-class fragments. In order to facilitate the designer's task, we propose a CASE tool dedicated to distributed OODB design. This tool presents the advantage of being guided by the design process. It integrates various kinds of rules and constraints that are related to distributed OODB design. These rules and constraints ensure the syntactic and semantic integrity of the designer's work.

In object oriented databases, objects are connected to each other by various kinds of relationships and form a general directed graph. The idea of leveled clustering is utilized to take advantage of the relationships and solve the problem of object allocation and storage in a distributed object oriented database. Both nonreplicative and replicative algorithms are developed to allocate objects to different sites and organize them in the storage of the local databases.< >

In order to support homogeneous distributed object oriented database systems we need to have a clear understanding of what is meant by partitioning a class and what are the different ways of doing so. In this paper, we concentrate an studying the different types of class partitioning schemes that can arise in object oriented databases. By laying down the foundation, by articulating the concepts, representation, and implementation approaches for partitioning object databases, we facilitate further work on partitioning algorithms, query decomposition, optimization and transaction management for distributed OODBMS.< >

Cooperative information systems (CIS) often consist of applications that access shared resources such as databases. Since centralized systems may have a great impact on the system performance, parallel and distribution techniques are needed for attaining scalability. Distributed databases are, then, crucial for the development of cooperative applications. However, in order to improve performance, it is very important to design information distribution properly, which is the goal of distribution design. Considering the various difficulties embedded in the design of distributed object oriented databases, this work presents an algorithm to assist distribution designers in their task. The analysis algorithm indicates the most adequate fragmentation technique (vertical, horizontal or mixed) for each class in the database schema, and we propose the use of a machine learning method-inductive logic programming-to uncover some implicit issues to be considered in the distribution design, thus revising the proposed analysis algorithm.

In object oriented scenario, inheritance is a process to make new classes by using classes that have already been defined. Inheritance helps to reuse existing code, by adding together of properties will enhance all new child objects without interfering with their existing ties. In object-oriented programming, an object is instance of class that consists of data and the methods, allows binding for them and operate on that data, stored in the memory of a running application. This paper presents a methodology of class hierarchy with the normalization in object oriented databases. CHNF (class hierarchy normal form) is good concept for implementing the normalization in class schema. The dilemma is that CHNF has not defined the levels for depth of inheritance; it is possible that CHNF base architecture invalidate the depth of inheritance and other metrics, which is defined by CK Metrics. As the database expends, heavy objects become complicated to handle. Although the more deep hierarchy tree implies that we have good reuse of code but it sound awful effects on memory and performance. For avoiding the heavy objects we have discovered a pattern CHNFP (class hierarchy normal form pattern). It follows the concept of CHNF as well as it validates the CK metrics.

This paper describes a replication algorithm for distributed real-time object-oriented databases in a static environment. All data requirements are specified a priori, and the algorithm creates replication transactions that copy remote data to a local site in order to guarantee that every data request reads temporally valid data. The algorithm conditions are proven to be necessary and sufficient for providing this guarantee. Test results indicate that under most conditions, this replication strategy is better than total replication, which is a typical strategy used in distributed databases.

In this paper, based on possibility distribution and the semantic measure of fuzzy data, we investigate subclass-superclass relationships in the fuzzy object-oriented databases. We identify fuzzy class and develop soft computing methods in the paper to quantitatively determine the fuzzy subclass-superclass hierarchies. The strategies to resolve the conflicts in multiple inheritance of class are also presented.

The impact of physical storage model choice on the performance of an object-oriented database is studied. It is examined how each of six physical storage models' space overhead reacts to changes in database parameters such as directed acrylic graph (DAG) shape, number of instances per class, and distribution of instances over the DAG. Home-class, leaf-overlap, and split-instance physical models consistently require the least storage, whereas repeat-classes, universal-class, and value-triple models require the most. For all models, the depth of the DAG has the strongest impact on space overhead. A set of analytic formulas is developed that allow a database designer to estimate database size for each physical model.< >

From the beginning of 1994 to the end of 1996, the IRO-DB (Interoperable Relational and object-oriented databases) ESPRIT project has developed tools for accessing relational and object-oriented databases in an integrated way, and for designing and maintaining integrated applications on large federations of heterogeneous databases. IRO-DB is based on the ODMG pivotal object model and gives an OQL/OML-C++ interface to users on a federation of relational and object-oriented databases. This paper summarizes the main problems and choices done during the system design, describes the IRO-DB architecture and components, presents the project's achievements and gives a synthesis of the lessons learned during the project's development. It also introduces future plans for the system.
