The authors developed a Sistematizacao de Assistencia de Enfermagem (SAE) system to the Clinica Escola da Universidade Potiguar (UnP) - Campus Mossoro (RN - Brazil), that aids in tracking gynecologic cancer. This methodology had been implemented and was named SAE-GIN. This work made the comparison between a Relational database (MariaDB) and an object oriented database (DB4O);where, in the end, the MariaDB obtained better performance.

Smart grid introduces new communication demands, as well as multitude of new hardware, software and other asset types that increase the demand for reliable and secure asset management software. This paper explores the database design and implementation of a smart grid asset management application. While relational databases provide excellent platform upon which to build software, the focus of this paper is on object oriented database management system (OODBMS), which provides excellent model of real-life challenges in asset management. Furthermore, object oriented database can readily be converted into software where each class models one database table. This makes it easier to develop software on target database design.

OODB technology, an abbreviation of the 'object oriented database' technology is database management system. It provides the modeling and design of the data as objects. The evolution of the OODB concepts arise from the easy and efficient ways of accessing the object using the popular concepts of OOPS 'Encapsulation and Inheritance'. The transaction model is based on innovative traits of object oriented strategy methods, the ownership knowledge model, and very basic constraints. Here different database technologies are compared based on transactions are tested to satisfy the schema integrity constraints on number of transactions. The important contribution of this paper is object oriented schemas. These are geared up with integrity constraints on software database and static two stage verification of transactions with reorganization to the integrity constraints. As per the survey of literature this method is new approach in OODB technology. Moreover, transaction verification is just not only static, but it's also automatic, in order that the verification science is obvious to the consumer. In static verification proposed approach also supports partial dynamic enforcement of constraints. The final outcome of proposed approach is a reliable database and ACID property maintain in database.

This paper presents a new method for image retrieval using a graph object oriented database for processing the information extracted from the image through the segmentation process and through the semantic interpretation of this information. The object oriented database schema is structured as a classes hierarchy based on graph data structure. A graph structure is used in all phases of the image processing: image segmentation, image annotation, image indexing and image retrieval. The experiments showed that the retrieval can be conducted with good results and the method has a good time complexity.

In this study, a workshop production management system supporting decision making is designed for use in small and medium-sized machine workshops. Small and medium sized companies’ quality, price, and delivery time issues are in a tough competitive environment. Especially such as the orders which cannot be delivered to customers in time, disruptions in production schedules and low production performance seem to be the major problems facing in this type of sector. Through this research it is aimed to design software to keep all the needed information in a suitable database and give the customers fast and accurate information. In order to support future implementation of decision support system, the software is designed such that it will enable the user to easily analyze its production parameters such as efficiency, cost deviation of production from planned cost, cost estimation of new production, etc. Due to the natural structure of this project object oriented database is chosen for implementation. These databases can be constructed through object-oriented language and in the scope of this work .NET based db4o is used. For software development, Unified Modelling Language (UML) is used since by using UML the database system is well defined, visualized, generated and specified considering complete project. The user interfaces are designed by using *** for easy access of the user location independently. It is seen that without using so much coding load, an effective object-oriented database can be designed. It is possible to use the same language for both application and object-oriented databases in contrast to relational databases. The designed database can be used in different machine workshops with small modifications depending on the specifications of workshops.

Frequent subgraph mining (FSG) has always been an important issue in data mining. Several frequent subgraph mining methods have been developed for mining graph data. However, most of these are main memory algorithms in which scalability is a bigger issue. A few algorithms have opted for a relational approach that stores the graph data in relational tables. However, relational databases have their own space as well computing constraints when it comes to storing large databases. Moreover, relational databases do not preserve semantic information as they represent simple entities and in order to preserve the relationship between two entities additional tables are necessary. object-oriented databases, on the other hand, do not have these constraints. In this paper, we present an object-oriented database approach to mining frequent sub-graphs. We use Db4o, a popular open-source object database system, to store the input graph data as well as intermediate results. Db4o can save all the information about an entity in a single class in an object form. Application domains such as protein-protein interaction data, social network data, and chemical compound structure data require mining frequent subgraphs while preserving the meaning. This paper proposes a novel idea for using object oriented database db4o to store graph data, which can support large graph data as well as preserve semantic information.

Wildfires are a serious problem affecting many terrestrial ecosystems and causing substantial economic damage. Understanding the variation in structure of fuels (which are predominantly represented by plant litter and live vegetation) is key to understanding the behaviour of wildland fires. An understanding of changes to fuels as vegetation develops is also central to the management of both wildfire and the planning of prescribed burning. A description of fuel structure is required for all models of fire behaviour. It is therefore important that we have an appropriate system for describing fuel structure and predicting how fuel structure will develop through time (i.e. fuel succession). In this paper we review the range of published models used for fuel description and fuel succession. We propose an object-orientated database as an appropriate method for storing the complex data structures that are needed to process and analyse data on fuels. The potential advantages of an object-orientated database as a tool for modelling fuel succession are discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: The explosion in biological information creates the need for databases that are easy to develop, easy to maintain and can be easily manipulated by annotators who are most likely to be biologists. However, deployment of scalable and extensible databases is not an easy task and generally requires substantial expertise in database development. Results: BioBuilder is a Zope-based software tool that was developed to facilitate intuitive creation of protein databases. Protein data can be entered and annotated through web forms along with the flexibility to add customized annotation features to protein entries. A built-in review system permits a global team of scientists to coordinate their annotation efforts. We have already used BioBuilder to develop Human Protein Reference database http://***, a comprehensive annotated repository of the human proteome. The data can be exported in the extensible markup language (XML) format, which is rapidly becoming as the standard format for data exchange. Conclusions: As the proteomic data for several organisms begins to accumulate, BioBuilder will prove to be an invaluable platform for functional annotation and development of customizable protein centric databases. BioBuilder is open source and is available under the terms of LGPL.

Computable Queries for object oriented databases

A relational database can be considered as a finite structure for a finite relational signature in first-order logic, i.e., there are no function symbols. Interpreting the logic over this signature in such structures allows the expressiveness and complexity of queries to be studied in detail. This is the starting point for finite model theory which has proven to be a viable tool to study relational database theory. In particular, it is known that computable queries expressed as isomorphism-preserving partial recursive functions can be formalized by Reflective Relational Machines. These are extended Turing Machines with an additional relational store, a query tape and the facility to evaluate the query on the tape against the database in the store in a single step. In this paper we start to generalize the theory to post-relational databases. We first consider the case of having set-based complex values and references such that the semantics can still be expressed in finite sets. Following the approach that object oriented databases in general including those, where the underlying type systems does no longer allow the semantics defined by sets, can be expressed as theories in higher-order intuitionistic logic, we use such a logic instead of first-order logic. However, as we are not yet exploiting the full power of such logics, we can interpret the logic in the category FINSET of finite sets, i.e., again in a structure defined by a database. Having done this the definition of computable queries and the model of Reflective Relational Machines carry over easily. We can show that the new model of Reflective object Machines guarantees completeness, i.e., all computable queries can be expressed by the model.

The NIAM conceptual schema model is a conceptual schema model that shows the distinction between entity types (types of object) and label types (types of values or names). In its original form, NIAM emphasis on the use of external identifiers for entity types. The unique identifiers and other label types are transformed into attributes of relational database schemata. There are well-defined algorithms that transform a NIAM conceptual schema to the fifth normal form relational database schemata. This is possible because the NIAM model shows fact types and reference types some of which can be transformed into relationships between attributes in the relational model. At present, the use of object databases in serious applications become very common especially when complex and multimedia objects are required. Existing object database design techniques emphasis on object classes and relationships between them with no considerations on the relationships between attributes. This could lead to redundancies. The same facts may appear in many objects instances of the same class. This paper presents ENIAM, an extension to NIAM which is suitable to be implemented on object databases. It introduces new concepts of category type, The main schema and sub schemas together with a transformation algorithm from an ENIAM conceptual scheme into object database schema.
