A proposal of a supporting expert system for outage planning of electric power facilities retaining high power supply reliability - Part II - Knowledge processing and simulation results

A prototype system has been constructed to validate the proposed method for assisting outage work scheduling that has been described in the companion paper. The prototype system has the following three functions: (1) to identify outage areas to be caused by requested outage works, (2) to generate a work unit into which as many outage works as possible should be merged, and (3) to schedule work units and to determine a suitable system configuration to assure a high supply reliability. In order to realize these functions, it is necessary to deal with demands of planning engineers for improving power system security as well as some constraints such as the number of available workers and ordering among outage works. Therefore, knowledge processing is mandatory since these factors are difficult to formulate in conventional procedure oriented languages. The proposed system has been successfully applied to test cases with 50 outage work requests taken from a part of the 110 kV transmission line system. Results obtained have made clear the superiority of the proposed method to the current scheduling based on the just the experience of the maintenance engineers.

This work describes both the concepts used in an object Manager for storage of medical images as one more data type associated to objects, and a support system developed to offer this kind of tool to medical application developers. The purpose of this work is to support the retrieval of images through queries based on the graphical contents of the stored images. The usual approach uses icons and textual attributes stored with the images to specify the queries. This work uses a novel modeling technique to define the 'image data type,' by means of which it is possible to decide, before the query itself, the key data of each image that must be extracted from the image when it is stored in the database, so the search can be accelerated when queries are issued. This approach enables building of expansible systems, where new image processing algorithms can be added easily, using its syntactic representation stored through an Image Meta-schema into the application database schema. This work shows how such a system has been implemented, and also provides a query language used to refer and execute these algorithms from inside the database management system.

We describe in this paper a prototype (1), PRIME, of a multimedia medical information retrieval system. The documents managed by PRIME are patient records, which are composed of administrative data, textual reports, and Magnetic Resonance Images. PRIME is developed on top of the object oriented DBMS O-2, and its interface can be any WWW-navigator (Netscape, InternetExplorer, ...). The retrieval engine of PRIME is based on Sowa's Conceptual Graph Formalism structures and operations.

Development of a finite element modeling system for ship structures

In ship structural design, many structural analyses by the finite element method are carried out on models at several different scale levels;for example, a whole ship, cargo hold parts, and detailed structures. However, one serious problem with this design and analysis process is that the generation of the finite element models for a complex configuration is very difficult and laborious. To overcome this problem, an object oriented, finite element modeling system, MODIFY, has been developed by the authors. In this paper, the concept of the finite element modeling system and the techniques for the construction of the system are explained. First, the object oriented data structure of the system, based on the Part-object concept, is proposed. In this concept, not only the geometry of the domain but also the analytical conditions, such as boundary conditions and material properties, and the finite element model, are represented by the object oriented data structure. By using this data structure, effective finite element model generation can be expected. Second, a mesh generation algorithm based on the frontal method is described. The original frontal method by S.H. Lo was improved for application to three-dimensional curved surfaces. A new inner node placement technique to make quadrilateral elements around stress concentrated areas is also proposed. These techniques are suitable for ship structures, and more accurate results from the finite element analysis can be expected. Moreover, the parallel mesh generation is implemented in MODIFY by using the client-server concept to accelerate mesh generation. Third, a prototype system for the automatic finite element model generation for different analysis levels is proposed. The system is based on the concept of the PD part, which is the part in the design and production stage, and automatic computing of the intersection between PD parts. The validity of this system is demonstrated by some examples.

Researchers using biomedical images have data management needs which are oriented perpendicular to clinical PACS. The Image BOSS system is designed to permit researchers to organize and select images based on research topic, image metadata, and a thumbnail of the image. Image information is captured from existing images in a Unix based filesystem, stored in an object oriented database, and presented to the user in a familiar laboratory notebook metaphor. In addition, the Image BOSS is designed to provide an extensible infrastructure for future content- based queries directly on the images.

Most the execution environments, having been derived from LISP, inference on internally defined data-types and come packaged with stand-alone development environments. Data derived from outside these systems must be reformatted before it can be evaluated. This mismatch leads to a duplicate representation of data, which, in turn, introduces both performance and semantic problems. This paper describes a C ++ Embeddable Rule System (CERS) which avoids this mismatch. CERS is a compiled, forward-chaining rule system that inferences directly on arbitrary C ++ objects. CERS can be viewed as an extension of C ++ , where the methods associated with a ruleset class can be defined either procedurally or declaratively. CERS is unique in that rules may match against and manipulate arbitrary, user-defined C ++ objects. There is no requirement that the developer anticipated using CERS when defining the class. Thus CERS rules can inference over data objects instantiated in persistent object stores and third-party. C ++ abstract data-type libraries.

CACSD has been the subject of much discussion for at least twenty years; beginning with the use of computers as numerical processors to the present development of general purpose graphical interactive CACSD environment Yet, in spite of the great strides made in the quantity and availability of CACSD appications, the control community's ability to integrate applications with the overall design process is still very undeveloped. Engineering support is more effective if the design environrnent is integrated and each tool works within an organisational context. This paper addresses the issues involved in information managetment in an integrated CACSD environment. The need for integration is etnphasised, various ditnensions of integration in an engineering design environment are defined and a repository-based unifying framework is proposed as a preferred direction for CACSD developrnent.

The continuous degradation of the quality of the St.-Lawrence river has been a major concern of the federal and provincial authorities in Canada. In order to correct the situation, the federal government has put forward in 1988 the five year St.-Lawrence Action Plan. The St.-Lawrence Centre was created to manage a part of the plan. The development of a decision support system based on geographical information system (GIS) technology was recognized as an important need for the St.-Lawrence Centre early in the plan. A description of the users and major operational needs is given, followed by the elaboration of a data structure and description of the system design. The system was developed on microcomputers with a 'modular dataset' approach. The data structure is conceptually very close to an object-oriented database, where each dataset can be considered as an object with spatial, temporal, quantitative, and equalitative attributes. In the prototyping stage, the system comprises a collection of loosely connected datasets of raster based maps linked via small programmed interfaces to attributes managed by a relational database. Documentation of each dataset and related map construction is maintained in a relational database. Future developments will address the problem of temporal data, consolidation of the database due to the implementation of environmental monitoring networks, amelioration of the user interface and use of multimedia technology to integrate text, image, and sound.
