The efficiency of the distributed systems is most often dominated by the network communications between the different sites. In distributed database systems, the communication between the different sites is almost essential to satisfy a query. In order to minimize the time required to respond to a query in such systems, a reliable fragmentation technique is required to place the data as close to its user as possible. The placement of these fragments to the proper sites is a complementary step to assure the right position of these fragments. The previous fragmentation techniques provided a way for fragmentation of the database that is followed by an allocation technique to allocate the produced fragments as separate steps. The key idea of this paper is that it introduces a novel technique that combines both the fragmentation and allocation processes into one composite process thus putting into consideration the allocation constraints while fragmenting the data. It also simplifies the effort required to get the best fragments and the best location of these fragments. This proposed technique relies on a cost-based model rather than an affinity model as being used in previous techniques. The case of simple methods and complex attributes database is considered in this paper. The results obtained by the technique proofed the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed technique

Rules have been adopted as a means of expressing knowledge which is uniform throughout the type lattice but needs to be customized for each object type with integrity constraints. More specifically, such knowledge involves associations between instances, between objects, and between objects in different databases; grouping of instances; creation and deletion of object instances; and any other activity that requires a uniform approach in order to ensure consistency and transparency. A logical query language based on the representation of associations between objects, which can be made by rules, has been used. The goal was not a full-fledged object-oriented programming language, but a logical query language with base predicate associations between objects. A logical query language has the obvious advantage of expressiveness and simplicity but poses certain difficulties in evaluation; evaluation is an issue in the case of recursive queries due to time-consuming join operations. This problem was overcome by transforming recursion into iterative navigation through associations between object instances.< >

object-oriented database systems are becoming popular and are being used in a large number of application domain. Many of these application domains are inherently distributed. The focus of this work is on articulating the concepts of method induced partitioning schemes in object-oriented databases by understanding and classifying the object behavior embodied by the methods. We provide a solution for supporting fragmentation transparency by using method transformation. Finally, we present guidelines for method induced partitioning in object-oriented databases.

The basic characteristics of object-oriented data models and query languages are summarized. An indexing technique is presented that supports an efficient evaluation of nested predicates for queries involving class hierarchies. A preliminary comparison of the proposed indexing technique with other techniques is presented. A first extension of this work is to define cost formulas for the proposed index organization and to compare it with other organizations, such as the multi-index and inherited-multi-index organizations. A second extension is to define indexing techniques to support alternative predicates on properties that are semantically equivalent. In addition to these, an important issue concerns indexing support for the use of methods in queries.< >

An extended object-oriented model for exploring semantics in aggregation hierarchies is presented. The extension is mainly based on a general distinction between aggregation references and association references and a support for type inheritance in both specialization and aggregation abstractions. The author formally describes notions of aggregation reference and aggregation hierarchy and introduces the concept of aggregation inheritance as a type composition mechanism for sharing specifications among types. The similarities and differences between aggregation inheritance and subtype inheritance are analyzed. It is shown that a combination of these two types of inheritance provides a powerful mechanism for abstract implementation of behavior and for enhancing the extensibility of the object model.< >

This paper describes a replication algorithm for distributed real-time object-oriented databases in a static environment. All data requirements are specified a priori, and the algorithm creates replication transactions that copy remote data to a local site in order to guarantee that even, data request reads temporally valid data. The algorithm conditions are proven to be necessary and sufficient for providing this guarantee. Test results indicate that under most conditions, this replication strategy is better than total replication, which is a typical strategy used in distributed databases.

The paper focuses on the indexing of non-primitive (complex) values of attributes in an object management system. A new index structure for indexing on set (multivalued) attributes is proposed. This structure is based on a partial order imposed on the values of the indexed attribute, which are subsets of a set of primitive values. It is shown that the proposed index allows the system to efficiently perform typical set operators that are postulated to be applied in object query languages (is-equal, is-subset, is-superset), without performing any costly operations on lists of object identifiers that would be necessary in traditional index structures. The new index structure, called partial-order tree, is described and algorithms performing the set operators are outlined.

Research into object-based concurrency and parallel architectures is briefly described. A multiprocessing, object-oriented database programming language and environment called RAPP has been designed and implemented, and is based on a tight integration of the relational data model and the object-oriented data modeling facilities of a modular, multiprocessing programming language. Persistence is provided through the relation data type, and so the simplicity of the relational model is retained. However, attributes of relations may be of type class, thereby permitting the implementation of a wide variety of object-oriented data modeling constructs, including aggregation and generalization, and complex objects with shared subobjects. Classes in RAPP support data abstraction, encapsulation, and multiple inheritance. Concurrency is provided by means of an explicit database transaction mechanism coupled with built-in primitives for synchronization, transaction atomicity, and serializability. The system consists of a relatively small, well-structured, multipass compiler which generates P-code and a highly portable run-time support environment.< >

An object-oriented database provides persistent storage for a large number of objects. These objects may be very small, and the access patterns are likely to be not as uniform as the mostly sequential reads and writes seen in file-systems. For example, the 007 benchmark for object-oriented databases specifies a number of traversals that follow pointers around a graph of objects. Given these differences between file-systems and object-oriented databases, disk management techniques used in file-systems will not perform well if naively applied to object-oriented databases. This paper proposes three disk management strategies for object-oriented databases. These strategies are based on earlier work on file-systems. They differ from this earlier work in their support for a large number of small objects and non-sequential access patterns.< >

A description is given of the concept and implementation techniques of schema virtualization in object-oriented databases. The objective of schema virtualization is to provide users with multiple views of a database. First, the notions of virtual classes and virtual schemata, which are natural extension of views in relational databases, is introduced. Then, procedures to convert a schema into a virtual one, as well as rules schemata and their conversion should satisfy, are discussed. The key issue of the design of virtual classes and virtual schemata is 'regarding procedures as objects'. Closure properties of classes and schemata are also discussed. Finally, several implementation techniques for realizing schema virtualization in Smalltalk-80 are presented.< >
