Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is widely used to represent, create, and display virtual reality objects and their environment. Some VRML applications require concurrent interaction by multiple users in a real-time distributed fashion. Such applications need a method for users to share and update the VRML objects in real-time. To allow concurrent shared real-time access, our approach is to store the VRML objects in an object-oriented database system (objectStore) in order to utilize the concurrency control mechanisms of the system. The authors present an architecture that allows multiple users to interact in a non-trivial way in such a shared VRML environment. We outline how the VRML world can be saved in objectStore and implement a series of test cases demonstrating concurrency issues arising from simultaneous updates. Our architecture uses ordinary Java enabled Web browsers with a VRML plug-in. A commercial Web server routes client requests to a custom application server which interacts with the object-oriented database. As users change the VRML world, our application server orders the requests and updates the master copy in the database.

An association algebra (A-algebra) is presented for manipulating object-oriented (O-O) databases which is analogous to the relational algebra for relational databases. In this algebra, objects and their associations in an O-O database are uniformly represented by association patterns and are manipulated by a number of operators. These operators are defined to operate on association patterns of both heterogeneous and homogeneous structures. Very complex structures (e.g. network structures of object associations across several classes) can be directly manipulated by these operators. Therefore, the association algebra has greater expressive powers than the relational algebra which manipulates on relations of compatible structures. Some mathematical properties of these operators are described together with their application in query decomposition and optimization. The algebra has been used as the basis for the design and implementation of an O-O query language called OQL and a knowledge rule specification language.< >

The authors discuss three different paradigms suitable for querying object-oriented geographic databases. All together, the paradigms presented constitute the basis of a flexible and easy to use querying environment suitable for different categories of users. The first paradigm, to be adopted by programmer users, is based on the message sending mechanism of object-oriented database programming languages. The second paradigm is a browsing-based technique suitable for not unskilled users who have only a vague idea of the contents of the database. Finally, a frame-based approach is adopted for the third paradigm: this is suitable for non-programmer users who have a specific task to accomplish.< >

The authors propose a semantic query-optimizer (SQO) using semantic integrity constraints (SICs) in an object-oriented database system (OODB). SICs assert permissible or consistent database states (a database state is the stored data at a given time instance) for a database application. For example, in a payroll database, the minimum hourly rate has to be $4.35 by law. The basic idea of SQO is to optimize queries by transforming a query qualification into another semantically equivalent one using semantic integrity constraints such that evaluating the transformed query would be less costly. Although semantic query optimization has been well studied in the context of relational and deductive database systems, certain distinct object-oriented features such as IS-A class hierarchy have not been taken into consideration. This is probably due to that OODB is relatively new and that there is lack of research so far on SICs in OODBs.< >

A query under an object-oriented data model exhibits characteristics which one finds in a relational query and those which clearly separate it from a relational query. The differences in turn have interesting impacts on the complexity of and strategy for query evaluation in object-oriented databases. The authors develop a model of a query under an object-oriented data model, and analyze the fundamental differences in the semantics of queries in object-oriented databases and relational databases.< >

We introduce and formalize the concept of two-level-hierarchies (t-l-hs) of objects. The t-l-hs are special partial directed acyclic graphs having as vertices objects. An equivalence relation is also defined on their edges. They are used for modelling complex objects by supporting, in a uniform way, the well known abstractions like association, aggregation, grouping as well as specialization and generalization. Considering the t-l-h as the design unit, we develop a new design process (Uni-Design) for the distributed object-oriented databases (DOODBs) by combining the main design approaches (Top-Down and Bottom-Up) in a consistent and complementary way leading to capture and represent explicitly most of the semantics of a system. We also choose the t-l-h as the elementary unit of distribution in order to adopt a distribution design strategy (a DOODB is now a set of possibly interrelated t-l-hs) and reconsider the notions of fragmentation and replication by integrating the distribution process at the last phase of the Uni-Design process.

Most methods that have been proposed to improve query processing in object-oriented databases are designed for the aggregation hierarchy. Although the structure of the generalization hierarchy is similar to the aggregation hierarchy, techniques developed for the aggregation hierarchy cannot fully use the characteristics of the generalization hierarchy to improve performance. We devise a new object signature for the generalization hierarchy. The object signature consists of two parts: a reference signature and a structure signature. The former can be used to eliminate objects that do not match the nested predicates specified in the query, and the latter can be used to eliminate objects that do not belong to the target classes. We propose some processing methods using the object signatures for queries that involve generalization hierarchies. In addition, we define cost models of the object signature and then compare the performance of the traditional query processing method with the object signature method. The results show that using the object signatures can effectively reduce the number of disk accesses in a query.

A natural language query interface for databases provides the user friendliness in retrieving the desired information by querying in a native natural language. Up to now, many natural language query interfaces for conventional databases have been developed. However, the field of natural language query interfaces for object-oriented databases which have recently started to emerge as the next-generation databases has become a new research area. This paper describes a processing technique to manipulate natural language representations of path expressions. From the fact that the path expression is one of the key features in the object-oriented data model, a frame based decomposition method is proposed for efficient processing.
