EMERGING STANDARDS FOR COMPONENT SOFTWARE

Two new technologies-compound documents, and component software-are likely to accelerate the spread of object-oriented concepts across system-level services, development tools, and application-level behaviors. Compound documents and component software, which are closely tied to the popular client/server architecture for distributed computing, define object-based models that foster interactions between independent programs. The new technologies promise to simplify the design and implementation of complex software applications and, equally important, simplify human/computer interactive work models for application end users. Software vendors have developed competing and incompatible standards to support and drive the compound document and component software technologies. These standards specify distinct object models, data storage models, and appplication interaction protocols. The incompatibilities have resulted in confusion in the market as vendors, users, system integrators, and developers struggle to sort out the standards' relative merits, weaknesses;and chances for commercial success. This article examines general technical concepts underlying compound documents and component software;the OpenDoc OLE 2, COM, and CORBA standards that have been proposed for the two technologies;and the work that is underway to extend the standards and to achieve interoperability across them.

We describe a two-level client-side cache for composite objects mapped as views of a relational database. A semantic model, the Structural Model, is used to specify joins on the relational database that are useful for defining composite objects. The lower level of the cache contains the tuples from each relation that have already been loaded into memory. These tuples are linked together from relation to relation according to the joins of the structural model. This level of the cache is shared among all applications using the data on this client. The higher level of the cache contains composed objects of data extracted from the lower level cache. This level of the cache uses the object schema of a single application, and the data is copied from the lower level cache for convenient access by the application. This two-level cache is designed as part of the Penguin system, which supports multiple applications, each with its own object schema, to share data stored in a common relational database.< >

object identification by abstract identifiers should be considered as a modeling and not as a database concept. This means that object identifiers are not appropriate for the access to specific objects using a database language. In this paper, we discuss how the relational concept of a functional dependency can be adapted to object databases in order to get more convenient ways of fetching objects. object functional dependencies are proposed allowing the determination of value-based identification criteria. For these constraints, different definitions of satisfiability are given based on a so-called validation relation. These definitions are related to different forms of identification.

Constructing geographic digital libraries using a hypermedia framework

This paper presents an object oriented hypermedia database framework for designing and building digital libraries, which are treated as enhanced hypermedia applications. It is based on combining and extending results from two domains: the navigation characteristics of hypertext systems, and the view mechanism and the persistent storage management facility of an object oriented database management system. As a result, users can alternate between two integrated types of interaction modes. The hypertext dimension of the framework allows navigation via static and dynamic hyperlinks;the object oriented database support enables querying by content and metadata management. The framework includes still a digital library design methodology that guides the implementation of digital libraries over the OODBMS. This proposal integrates hypermedia and DL concepts to a database environment, being instantiated on the realm of geographic data.

These days, practically everyone involved in developing software draws pictures that represent some aspect of the software or its requirements. They do this to improve their own understanding and, usually, to communicate that understanding to others. But all too often, the understanding is muddled and confused because the designer hasn't clearly established the picture's purpose or explained how others should interpret it. Surprisingly, this is true even when the designer uses an established modeling standard, such as the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The article looks at implementation, specification, and conceptual models in order to explain the intricacies of model based software design.

This paper shows how ideas from a combination of formal techniques can be used to enable the automatic generation of databases from precise object models. It explores how the specification of an object database design can be formalized in terms of method preconditions, method postconditions, and invariant properties - many of which will correspond to integrity constraints for the data representation. Individual method specifications can be completed to reflect constraints expressed elsewhere in the model, composed to specify transactions, and then translated into executable code, to produce a reliable data store with a programming interface. The process of completion, composition, and translation may be automated to produce a model-driven approach to the development of object databases

The problem of missing data arises in the distributed heterogeneous object databases because of the missing attribute conflict and the existence of null values. A set of algorithms are provided in this paper for query processing when the predicates in global queries involve missing data. For providing more informative answers to the users, the maybe results due to missing data are presented in addition to the certain results. One algorithm is designed based on the centralized approach in which the data are sent to the same site for integration and then processing. On the other hand, for reducing the response time, the localized approaches evaluate the predicates in different component databases in parallel. The proposed algorithms are compared and discussed by the simulation result on the total execution time and response time.

Database management systems (DBMS) are generally designed as subsystems on top of operating systems (OS), which frequently leads to duplications of functions between the DBMS and the OS, as well as performance inefficiency and compromised security. A new design approach for a database operating system is described that eliminates much of the duplication by integrating the duplicated functions into independent security and input/output-file support subsystems, both of which are used by the OS and the DBMS. Both subsystems are based on a logical information model of the computer storage system. The security subsystem is designed according to an access control model that, when extended with Boolean predicates, produces an access control model capable of enforcing content-dependency security policies. Specification of the security subsystem and proofs for its correctness are discussed, along with authorization models and multiple user processes for the new system organization.

The Tanguy knowledge-base management system, which integrates rule-base, database, and object-oriented paradigms to capture the advantages of each, is discussed. Tanguy provides set-oriented interfaces, data-driven production rules, and permanent object storage in a C++ environment. The need for integration of the three paradigms is reviewed. The Tanguy architecture, the data model used in Tanguy, and Tanguy's production rules are described.
