Auditing capability is one of the requirements for secure databases. A secure database management system, among other things, has to provide not only facilities for recording the history of all updates and queries against the database but high-level support for querying this history as well. The authors present an audit model for object-oriented databases that satisfies both requirements. The model offers several additional advantages: (1) it imposes a uniform logical structure upon both the current and the audit data: (2) it results in zero-information loss, i.e. there is never any loss of historical or current information in this model; and (3) since it captures the entire database activity, a complete reconstruction of every action taken on the database is possible. They show how this third aspect can be exploited to provide high-level support for expressing audit and other database queries and therefore, they make a complete audit trail methodology available.< >

Relational database systems and most object-oriented database systems provide support for queries. Usually these queries represent retrievals over sets or multisets. Many new applications for databases, such as multimedia systems and digital libraries, need support for queries on complex bulk types such as lists and trees. In this paper we describe an object-oriented query algebra called AQUA (= A Query Algebra) for lists and trees. The operators in the algebra preserve the ordering between the elements of a list or tree, even when the result list or tree contains an arbitrary set of nodes from the original tree. We also present predicate languages for lists and trees which allow order-sensitive queries because they use pattern matching to examine groups of list or tree nodes rather than individual nodes. The ability to decompose predicate patterns enables optimizations that make use of indices.< >

The main semantics of constraints pertaining to OO (object-oriented) databases are identified, constraints are classified into types based on these semantics, and a simple and powerful constraint language for OO databases is described. If a set of constraints needs to be defined over the same subdatabase, the approach allows for defining the shared subdatabase first, followed by the set of constraints. If the original database is updated causing new extensional patterns to enter into the subdatabase (because they, after the update, satisfy the conditions used to define the subdatabase), these patterns have to satisfy all the constraints specified for the database. Typical database constraints, such as the non-null and total participation constraints, can be easily specified in the language as constraints on patterns of object associations. The implementation of the constraint processing system is described. The language supports the use of the existential and universal quantifiers.< >

Query graph (QG) is an easy-to-use visual query language which facilitates formulating a query. Unlike relational databases, in object-oriented databases (OODBs), the basic entity of QG, i.e. a class, may consist of several entities to which the operations of a query actually apply, which causes the increase of query complexity and lack of expressiveness. We propose a visual query language object query diagram (OQD) for OODBs, where a class is specialized as a number of object sets which are the primitive entities of designation. By using the well-known Venn diagram, OQD supports the features of object-oriented data models like object identity and multivalued attributes. We describe the syntax and semantics of OQD through a number of illustrative examples.< >

Aiming at distinguish objects, the concept of object comparison plays an important role in object management in object-oriented databases as well as object-oriented knowledge bases. In order to model uncertain data and complex-valued attributes as well as complex relationships among objects, fuzzy object-oriented databases have been introduced. In this paper, based on possibility distribution and the semantic measure of fuzzy data, we propose a more general way to compare fuzzy objects in the fuzzy object-oriented databases. We introduce an equivalence degree to compare fuzzy objects.

Due to the navigational characteristic, queries in an object-oriented database system (OODBS) often access a series of related objects. A clustering strategy can be used to place related objects on the same disk page such that the number of I/O operations required for query processing can be reduced. Therefore, the clustering strategy is important for improving the performance of OODBSs. In this research, we propose a new clustering strategy which uses both the object affinity and access pattern information to cluster objects. We first use a set of queries to generate the training traces. Each query produces a graph that represents the access pattern of the query. Then, we use these patterns as clustering units to group objects. If the size of objects in one graph is larger than the size of one disk page, we partition the objects in the graph. Simulation results of our new clustering strategy are also included.

Developing object-oriented database for web applications may not remain constant and may vary to a large extent due to a variety of reasons like correcting mistakes, adding new features or any changes in the structure of the real world artifacts modeled in the database. Class versioning is one of the evolution strategy employed that addressing the above issues. The existing strategy for instance adaptation introduces the adaptation code directly into the class versions upon evolution. Consequently, if the behavior of a routine needs to be changed and maintenance has to be performed on all the class versions it was introduced. A new approach for instance adaptation is achieved by encapsulating the instance adaptation code through aspects - abstractions introduced by aspect-oriented programming that localize cross-cutting concerns. A web-based student database system was developed with different versions and the versioning problem was solved using update/backdate aspects with selective lazy conversion. The update/backdate aspects are invoked whenever version incompatibility arises and selective lazy conversion aspect is invoked when the condition for converting objects into new version is satisfied and this converts only a subset of the old version objects into new version.

Forward traversal methods are used to process queries having nested predicates in object-oriented databases. To expedite the forward traversal, a signature replication technique is proposed. object signature is a signature formed by values of all atomic attributes defined in the object. When an object refers to other objects through its attribute, the object signature of the referred object is stored into the referring object. Using object signatures, nested predicates can be checked without inspecting referred objects.< >

Concepts of deputy objects and deputy classes for object-oriented databases (OODBs) are introduced. They can be used for unified realization of object views, roles and migration. The previous researches on these concepts were carried out separately, although they are very closely related. objects appearing in a view can be regarded as playing roles in that view. object migration is caused by change of roles of an object. Deputy objects can be used for unified treatment of them and generalization of these concepts. The schemata of deputy objects are defined by deputy classes. A set of algebraic operations are developed for deputy class derivation. In addition, three procedures for update propagation between deputy objects and source objects have been designed, which can support dynamic classification. The unified realization of object views, roles and migration by deputy mechanisms can achieve the following advantages. (1) Treating view objects as roles of an object allows them to have additional attributes and methods so that the autonomous views suitable for OODBs can be realized. (2) Handling object roles in the same way as object views enables object migration to be easily realized by dynamic classification functions of object views. (3) Generalization of object views, roles and migration makes it possible that various semantic constraints on them can, be defined and enforced uniformly.< >

It has been common knowledge for most researchers that object oriented databases should support relational operations effectively and efficiently, but it has not been resolved adequately. The major reason is that the object oriented data model lacks a solid theoretical foundation, as a relational model does. In order to remedy that problem, the paper presents a directed graph based association algebra that is an important improvement on a non directed graph based association algebra worked out by S.Y.W. Su et al. (1993). An important type of association pattern is introduced as well, which makes the association algebra more practical. The directed graph based association algebra can reflect more precisely the intrinsic quality of the object oriented model and is more advantageous to query processing and optimization of objects than its non directed graph based counterpart.
