Flexible querying provides new interrogation tools that enable the user to express preferences inside requirements and priorities inside compound queries. The answers are qualified and presented as a set of discriminated elements according to their degree of adequation. The objective of our work is to define a flexible query language for an object-oriented database and to provide a general framework on which applications can fully exploit the graduality associated with their processing tools. In this paper, we focus specifically on the study of bags.

Many applications of object-oriented database systems demand high performance and require longer duration transactions. These requirements are contrary to one another. Two trends in modern systems can help improve the situation. Firstly, multiprocessors are becoming commonplace, and secondly, object-oriented database systems supporting multiple versions are becoming popular. Consequently, database protocols that are less prone to extensive blocking (as can be the case with the popular two-phase locking protocol) are needed in future systems. The authors' simulation studies have shown substantial performance improvements can be obtained by using multiversion protocols for database transaction management. These protocols provide higher throughput at higher levels of concurrency (which are achievable with multiprocessors) than their traditional single version equivalents.< >

Data migration between relational and object-oriented database systems is useful whenever relational data is needed in new object-oriented environments. However, implementing migration programs, i.e. converting and loading legacy data into the new database system, is cumbersome and must be done for each pair of databases manually. This paper presents a flexible approach to support data exchange using a federation approach. Given any relational database, a migration program for filling an object-oriented database is generated. The other direction can be automated in the same way.

A temporal object-oriented model and query language that supports the modeling and manipulation of complex temporal or versioned objects is developed. The authors show that the approach not only provides a richer model than the relational for capturing the semantics of complex temporal objects, but also requires no special constructs in the query language. Consequently, the retrieval of temporal and non-temporal information is uniformly expressed. By allowing variables and quantifiers to range over time, can be formulated that require special operators in other languages. Temporal aggregation queries, which are not easily expressed in other models, are expressed using the same aggregation operators as for nontemporal data.< >

Investigates temporal query processing and optimization in the context of object-oriented databases. Based on our temporal object data model and algebra, a strategy of decomposition is presented to process temporal queries that involve associations of both aggregation hierarchy and time-reference. That is, the evaluation of an enhanced path, which is defined to extend a path with time-reference, is decomposed by initially dividing the path into two sub-paths: one contains the time-stamped class that can be optimized by making use of the ordering information of temporal data and another in an ordinary sub-path which can be further decomposed and evaluated using different algorithms. The intermediate results of traversed two sub-paths are then joined together to create the query output. Algorithms of time-related operations and four basic join algorithms have been implemented with stream processing techniques and presented with a cost analysis. Optimization issues have been discussed.

A deductive rule-based language for object-oriented databases is presented. A deductive rule in this language derives new patterns of associations among objects of some selected classes if these objects fall in certain 'base' on other derived patterns. The patterns of object associations derived by a rule are held in a subdatabase whose intention consists of some selected classes and their associations. In other words, the structure of a derived subdatabase is represented using the structural constructs provided by the object-oriented data model and hence can be uniformly operated on by other rules to further derive new subdatabases. Therefore, the world of subdatabases is closed under this rule-based language.< >

An authorization model for object-oriented databases is developed. This model consists of a set of policies, a structure for authorization rules, and an algorithm to evaluate access requests against the authorization rules. The model is illustrated by a specific database system intended for CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/manufacturing) applications, and incorporates knowledge rules with a database of objects combined through an object-oriented semantic association model (OSAM). The database is composed of objects that include a collection of facts and a collection of relevant rules. All the knowledge manipulation operations can be used to express the rules. Some of these rules could be integrity or security rule, i.e. they could be the basis for a mechanism to enforce integrity or security.< >

Existing temporal databases focus on the management of data history. However, it may be required to know how users, procedures and policies affect the data value changes in decision support system and database debugging or maintaining systems. If so, the object model needs to incorporate the behavioral modeling of data objects. We propose a model using finite state machines, method signatures and a method invocation network to model the behavior between objects. A type system is also devised to enforce the substitutability of subtype objects in the class inheritance hierarchy. A decision maker or database application developer can query the effect of events by using the proposed object model.

Cyclic query processing issues in object-oriented databases are investigated. A data and cyclic query model is defined for an object-oriented database system, using a graph model. Then the efficient processing of a general object-oriented cyclic query is discussed. For efficient processing, a general cyclic query and the access plans generated for a given query are defined and a cost model is developed to determine the cost for each access plant generated. The retrieval algorithms used for actual data retrieval are also investigated.< >

In distributed object-oriented databases(DOODB), objects are distributed in different sites on a communication network. A class fragmentation that divides a class into several fragments is needed for improving performance and for reducing repetition and duplication of data transmission. It is proposed the vertical class fragmentation to reflect the characteristics of object-oriented database such as method, inheritance and composite-object. In this paper, we define the objective function for allocation considering system to save cost including storage, query processing and communication and implemented it using genetic algorithm.
