In distributed object-oriented databases(DOODB), objects are distributed in different sites on a communication network. A class fragmentation that divides a class into several fragments is needed for improving performance and for reducing repetition and duplication of data transmission. It is proposed the vertical class fragmentation to reflect the characteristics of object-oriented database such as method, inheritance and composite-object. In this paper, we define the objective function for allocation considering system to save cost including storage, query processing and communication and implemented it using genetic algorithm.

A presentation format generation strategy for composite reports is proposed for object-oriented databases. The reports can have nested formats (in extended non-first-normal-form). The problem of presentation view generation over object-oriented conceptual/external view is discussed. The presentation format should vary at run time, depending on repeating groups and data arrangement. A new format composition scheme is proposed, based on the idea of dynamic co-referring objects, which uses an object-oriented data model extended to the presentation layer. As important features, various composite reports can easily be derived from databases, and dynamic format modification is possible interactively, even after retrieving the data.< >

In contrast to existing database systems, the evolution of object-oriented databases has accompanied the growing trend towards the use of desktop workstations. They have consequently been designed around a client server architecture from the start. The kind of applications for which object-oriented databases have been associated also tend to suit the client-server approach, in that they typically exploit the powerful client workstations to handle much of the computational load. A key purported benefit of object-orientation is its ability to form classes which bind given attributes of an entity with a clearly defined set of access functions called methods, so called encapsulation. The resulting self-contained objects are well suited as a basis on which to build a client-server model. Individual objects form a compact and convenient unit which can be moved around a distributed system. In practice however this raises a number of issues which are discussed. The author covers some of these issues, paying particular attention to two: performance and access to non-object oriented legacy data.< >

An important research trend in databases is to handle different types of uncertainty at conceptual level. The trend of incorporating complex objects in databases presents opportunities for representing imprecision and uncertainty that were difficult to integrate cohesively in simple database models. We introduce a conceptual data model by extending ExIFO to handle both complex and uncertain, mainly fuzzy, objects and classes.

Discusses design evolution support using the semantic extension of versions of a configuration that is composed of a set of component objects. The notion of transient, working and released versions of a simple object is extended to transient, working and released versions of a configuration. We look at how the consistency between a configuration version and its components' versions can be maintained using a special object called a consistency descriptor. Further, the problem of maintaining the semantic consistency of relationships in multi-version configurations is also addressed. A novel hybrid architecture of design workspaces in object-oriented databases is introduced that allows the collaboration at all levels of the workspace hierarchy.

Ordinary object oriented databases have been eagerly studied. We already proposed a fuzzy object oriented database that can treat ambiguous attribute values with certainty factors and ambiguous inheritance using fuzzy sets (M. Umano et al., 1995). We implement an SQL type data manipulation language and demonstrate it using several examples.

This paper presents a prototype implementation written using the Visual C++ programming language and interfacing with the commercial ODBMS by Versant. This fuzzy front-end for Versant's object database has the capability to visually create fuzzy linguistic terms and use them for object attribute values. The database may be queried using fuzzy/crisp predicates over fuzzy/crisp attributes and the capability to reason with fuzzy attribute-valued objects is provided through integration with the FuzzyCLIPS expert system.

An object-oriented (OO) temporal database management system can better meet the data management requirements of many applications because it not only provides powerful facilities for modeling and processing the structural and behavioral properties of complex objects but also supports the management of temporal data. However, due to the generality and high functionality of an OO system, the append-only nature of temporal databases and the irregular evolutions of object instances, processing efficiency is very difficult to achieve using serial algorithms and conventional computing systems. The paper presents two multi-wavefront parallel query processing strategies, five primitive time-alignment operations and their implementations on a parallel computer nCUBE2. The multi-wavefront algorithms allow asynchronous processing and propagation of temporal object instance identifiers and data in order to identify temporal object instances which satisfy a complex multi-class query. They offer both intraquery parallelism and interquery parallelism in query processing. The time-alignment operations allow data with different evolution time intervals to be aligned to determine the common intervals in which the combined factual information is valid. Some performance evaluation results are also reported.

The complex processes involved in electronic product design require the use of cornputer-based tools to manage the various steps in the design process. Creating and revising an electronic design generates a large amount of interrelated machine-readable data. Today the tools at each point in the process generate their own independent views of the data--or "objects"--defined in each design phase. A great deal of work remains to be done to integrate these processes, and eventually eliminate the need for designers to rely on costly and time-consuming translation steps to move their work from one tool to the next. Making the transition from working with a series of point tools designed for individual engineers to concurrent sharing of all design data by a team of engineers will bring enormous benefits in productivity to the design process. This is why the concept of establishing a "framework for concurrent engineering" is taking the electronic design automation industry by storm. In other disciplines, the solution to the problem of sharing and distributing large interrelated databases has been commercially available database management systems (DBMSs). If the data type to be stored and managed fit well within the relational database model--for example, spreadsheets or other record-oriented data--then the commercial RDBMSs offer an answer. But in the case of electronic design-oriented applications, no DBMS technology existed that could meet the demands for both group sharing of data and interactive performance levels matching standalone applications. But today, the second generation of object-oriented database management systems (ODBMSs) indeed represent the enabling technology for an evolution to concurrent engineering in the electronic design industry.

Four parallel pointer-based join algorithms for set-valued attributes are described. Such joins will be common in next-generation object-oriented database systems. It is shown that while algorithms based on hybrid-hash provide good performance, algorithms that require less replication will often produce as good or better performance, especially if each set-valued attribute references a small number of nodes.< >
