A graph theoretic approach to the path indexing problem is proposed. We represent the indexing relationships supported by indices allocated in the classes in the path in the form of a directed graph. All the previous approaches directly fit into the scheme and form a hierarchy of complexity with respect to the time required for selection of the optimal index configuration. Based on the general scheme, we develop a new approach to the path indexing problem exploiting the notion of visibility graph. We introduce a generalized nested inherited index, give algorithms for retrieval and update operations and compare the behavior of the new structure with previous approaches.

XML has emerged as the universal format for data exchange and is being widely used in technical documentation of manufacturing companies, book publishing, and Web publishing. It is also being used in contexts that are mission-critical, such as banking and e-commerce. One of the main reasons for the popularity of XML is its semi-structured nature and the flexibility of its component parts. Schemaless XML documents, which do not have a schema or Document Type Definition (DTD), have the highest level of flexibility, as they are not bound to any kind of structure. However, support for schemaless XML documents in the major relational and object-oriented databases is limited to storing each of them as a CLOB (Character Large object). This kind of storage requires the usage of associative search criteria to query the document, and does not support piecewise update and multiple document queries. In this research, we developed a middleware layer over an Oracle DBMS to support the storage, retrieval, query and update of schemaless XML documents. We also propose an algorithm by which we can store the logical structure of the XML document in addition to storing its content. The final part of this paper presents an algorithm that can rebuild XML documents by using the stored logical structures and the content of the XML documents. The rebuilt XML document is a well-formed document and is similar to the original document.

This paper presents a novel approach to transform an existing object-oriented database into XML. The major motivation to carry out this study is the fact that it is necessary to facilitate platform independent exchange of the content of object oriented databases. There are more common features between the object-oriented model and XML and thus the mapping from object-oriented databases into XML is less problematic. To achieve the mapping, what we call the object graph is derived based on characteristics of the object-oriented schema; it simply summarizes and includes all nesting and inheritance links, which are the basics of the object-oriented model. Then, the inheritance is simulated in terms of nesting to get a simulated object graph. This way, everything in a simulated object graph is directly representable in XML format. Finally, we handle the mapping of the actual data from the object-oriented database into corresponding XML document(s).

Much of the work in query optimization in object-oriented database is devoted to finding efficient ways of path traversals expressed in a query. In the environment where a query involves classes distributed across several sites, communication cost must be taken into consideration. In this paper we describe a tree query optimization algorithm using dynamic programming technique for a distributed object-oriented database. The primary objective of the optimization is to minimize the total processing time including local processing and communication costs. In contrast to optimizers which consider a restricted search space, the proposed optimizer searches the execution plans which may be deep or bushy trees. Especially the plans can start traversal anywhere in a query graph and not only from either end of the query graph.< >

The use of data abstraction in object-oriented databases places a burden on the ability of the system to perform query optimization. A framework for query specification and optimization is discussed that is applicable to object-oriented database systems that take a strict view of data abstraction. Techniques that preserve much of the optimization potential of relational languages by limiting the query language are examined. Techniques are given for query optimization that involve type-specific rewrite rules.< >

Changes in the real world may require both the database population and the database schema to evolve. Particularly, this is the case in CAD/CAM and CASE database systems, in which the design objects constantly evolve in every aspect. On the other hand, the prototyping of a database design may also involve changes to both the structure and behavior of a schema. Unfortunately, most of the current systems offer little support for schema evolution. In this paper, we survey the recent development of the research in the schema evolution of object-oriented databases. The main issues in the current research are identified.

Presents an algebra to query object-oriented databases that integrate versions. This algebra rests on an object-oriented data model which permits, by means of versions, the description of both value and schema evolutions for entities. The specificities of versions are taken into account. So, versions describing an entity may be queried either by considering the derivation hierarchy they belong to (all the entity states are considered) or independently, one from another (only some entity states are considered).

An object-oriented database can be viewed as a time-varying set of patterns of associations among objects. A constraint specification language that is based on this view of object-oriented databases is presented. Constraints in this language may prevent the existence of certain patterns of associations among objects. Transactions that result in creating such illegal patterns of object associations will transform the database into an inconsistent state. Other constraints may control the existence of certain objects in some specified patterns of object associations based on their existence in some other association patterns with other objects. In addition, mapping constraints that restrict the existence of objects in some object association patterns can also be specified in the language considered.< >

As the use of PACS in cardiac imaging is becoming more widespread, the demands on the functionality of PACS increases as well. OO database management software has become mature and use of it for PACS development can be considered as a possibility, especially the so called OO-relational DBMS solution that is capable of managing terabytes of information. The development of smart PACS for cardiac settings will become a realistic possibility. Experiences with one package are promising but much work has to be undertaken yet.
