Challenging application domains for workflow systems such as electronic publishing and technical engineering require equally progressed document management features. This is due to the fact that document management within these application domains is characterized by huge amounts of data, highly structured documents, as well as hypermedia information. Integrating existing services for workflow management based on an active object-oriented database system with document management based on commonly accepted international standards like SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) and HyTime (Hypermedia/Time-based Structuring Language) allows to benefit from the advantages of both technologies. This results in document-based workflow management systems which can cope both with frequently changing organizational requirements and with the exchange of platform independent interlinked documents across system boundaries.

The authors have show previously (1989, 1991) that processing OODBs can be viewed as the manipulation of patterns of object associations. Parallel, multiple wavefront algorithms based on an identification approach for verifying association patterns have been introduced. The current paper presents an elimination approach for processing OODBs. The new approach allows more processors to operate concurrently on a query, thus allowing a higher degree of parallelism in query processing. A formal proof of the correctness of the new approach is given, and a parallel elimination algorithm for processing tree queries is presented. Some simulation results are also provided to compare the performance of the identification approach with the elimination approach.< >

In geographic maps, objects are represented in a context extremely rich of relationships among them, either one-to-one or many-to-many. Unfortunately, all these relationships can not be directly represented in the database scheme. Nevertheless, it should be possible to show them to the user during the interaction. To manage this problem, the authors refer to a two-level database architecture with an object-oriented data model at the bottom level (the logic level), and an interaction model at the top level. The spatial data model given is an essential part of the interaction model. The spatial data model is a conceptual tool that enhances the object-oriented model with spatial relationships between objects. The basic objectives of the spatial data model are outlined: to point out the relationships among objects to be shown in the views, to define data structures suitable for navigating among database objects, and to provide a simple and powerful calculus for posing spatial queries against the database.< >

The authors present a secure kernelized architecture for multilevel object-oriented database management systems. The architecture is based on the notion of a message filter. It builds upon the typical architecture of current object-oriented database management systems. Since the operations mediated by the message filter are arbitrarily complex operations (as opposed to primitive reads and writes), a secure message filter requires careful attention to potential timing covert channels. Although the overall computation is logically a sequential one, to be secure one must actually execute pieces of the computation concurrently. This raises a synchronization problem for which they give a secure multiversion protocol. The fundamental problem solved is how to securely and correctly 'write up' in terms of abstract operations.< >

A new publishing tool using the concept of hypertext views for object-oriented databases is presented. With this tool, one can make the contents of a database accessible through a Web interface to data browsing tools without knowing the storage structure of the database. Unlike other publishing tools, this one is completely declarative and based on the database's semantic links, thus it does not need any database or server programming. First an approach to map database objects to hypertexts is introduced. Then we show how to include these approaches in an entirely declarative hypertext view definition language. Finally, a prototype translator for generating a World Wide Web (WWW) hypertext view is introduced.

A method for implementing subtyping and inheritance, as independent features of object-oriented languages, is presented. There are at least two reasons for decoupling subtyping from inheritance: the negative influence on encapsulation and the different perspective of specification inheritance (subtyping) and implementation inheritance (code sharing). Subtyping and inheritance are defined in two independent constructs: the class module and the implementation module which are separately compiled. Subtyping is declared in the class module which contains all the public definitions of the class (e.g., types ad operation signatures), while inheritance is defined in the implementation module, which contains the implementations of all the operations of the class. The class module includes assertions which are an algorithmic form of operation specification.< >

We develop an efficient algorithm for the query interoperation among existing heterogeneous object-oriented and relational databases. Our algorithm utilizes a canonical deductive database as a uniform representation of object-oriented schema and data. High-order object queries are transformed to the canonical deductive database in which they are partially evaluated and optimized, before being translated to relational queries. Our algorithm can be incorporated into object-oriented interfaces to relational databases or object-oriented federated databases to support object queries to heterogeneous relational databases.< >

Database management system can support the various aspects of the construction process. Study of the requirements for such a database system has led the authors to the conclusion that the most appropriate abstract data model for construction data is that of object-oriented data. To study the appropriateness of this model, they have developed the specific example of a simple building with components specified as a hierarchy of object classes. The example shows the importance of the concepts of inheritance, aggregation, and generalization in modeling construction data.< >

We present a tunable two-dimensional class hierarchy indexing technique (2D-CHI) for object-oriented databases. We use a two-dimensional file organization as the index structure. 2D-CHI deals with the problem of clustering objects in a two-dimensional domain space consisting of the key attribute domain and the class identifier domain. In conventional class indexing techniques using one-dimensional index structures such as the B/sup +/-tree, the clustering property is exclusively owned by one attribute. These indexing techniques do not efficiently handle the queries that address both the attribute keys and the class identifiers. 2D-CHI enhances query performance by adjusting the degree of clustering between the key value domain and the class identifier domain based on the precollected usage pattern. For performance evaluation, we first compare 2D-CHI with the conventional class indexing techniques using an analytic cost model based on the assumption of uniform object distribution, and then verify the cost model through experiments using the multilevel grid file as the two-dimensional index. We further perform experiments with nonuniform object distributions. Our experiments show that our proposed method does indeed build optimal class index structures regardless of query types and object distributions. We strongly believe that our paper significantly contributes to building a self-tunable database system by supporting automatically tunable index structure.

object-oriented database systems are becoming popular and are being used in a large number of application domain. Many of these application domains are inherently distributed. The focus of this work is on articulating the concepts of method induced partitioning schemes in object-oriented databases by understanding and classifying the object behavior embodied by the methods. We provide a solution for supporting fragmentation transparency by using method transformation. Finally, we present guidelines for method induced partitioning in object-oriented databases.
