Information modeling for tiered activities in CAPP is studied for the generation of manufacturing plan. Based on the systematic information modeling methodology, objects information activities and their relationship in manufacturing planning (MP) have been analyzed. The object-oriented systems analysis (OSA) approach is used to describe the static and dynamic characteristics of information involved in MP. Therefore, the correlative relationships within the MP from part design to manufacturing plan can be properly described. A tri-level decision-making mechanism is employed to formulate the manufacturing planning model. So, the computer aided manufacturing planning (CAMP) under certain manufacturing resources has been realized. Finally, a case study of manufacturing planning is presented to verify the feasibility of the method.

One of the foci of the recent development in object oriented modeling (OOM) has been the extension of OOM to fuzzy logic to capture and analyze informal requirements that are imprecise in nature. A novel approach to object oriented modeling based on fuzzy logic is proposed to formulate imprecise requirements along four dimensions: (1) to extend a class by grouping objects with similar properties into a fuzzy class; (2) to encapsulate fuzzy rules in a fuzzy class to describe the relationship between attributes; (3) to evaluate the membership function of a fuzzy class by considering both static and dynamic properties; and (4) to model fuzzy associations between classes. The proposed approach is illustrated using the problem domain of a meeting scheduler system.

We describe a way to integrate fine granular structures of digital documents in an object-oriented database. A generic data model was specified to provide a simple and flexible way to manage the documents. The demonstration system includes a possibility to create and import document collections, to map document structures to the internal generic model, and finally to search for documents and to present them.

Designers face the challenge of specifying and implementing complicated mixed-technology systems. In order to better address mixed-signal designs, the VHDL-AMS and Verilog-AMS languages have been developed. These languages provide powerful capabilities to model and simulate behaviors in both the continuous and discrete time domains. Contemporaneously, the control systems community developed the object-oriented Modelica language to support the specification and continuous time modeling of complex control systems. The STEAMS (SUAVE and Tennessee Extensions for Analog and Mixed-Signal Systems) effort strives to provide an object-oriented systems specification and modeling language that supports both discrete and continuous time behaviors. STEAMS enables the modeling of interacting continuous and discrete time components coupled with the modeling productivity benefits associated with object-oriented techniques. This paper presents the requirements and rationale for the STEAMS language development effort, including modeling deficiencies facing the VHDL-AMS user community.

A formal approach for object-oriented database modeling and design is presented. It is based on the IFO/sub 2/ model, an extension of the semantic model IFO defined by S. Abiteboul and R. Hull (1987). The approach is illustrated through the mapping formalization of the IFO/sub 2/ model into the O/sub 2/ model. This work, supported by an External European Research Project in collaboration with Digital Equipment Corporation, comes within the scope of a larger project whose aim is to realize a computer aided system for advanced applications modeling and design.

The hypermedia document is also a kind of structured document. However more factors should be considered in handling hypermedia documents because they contain multimedia data and also have multiple complex structures such as hyperlink networks and spatial/temporal layout structures as well as logical structures. We propose an object-oriented model for multi-structured hypermedia documents and multimedia data, and a query language for retrieving hypermedia document elements based on the content and multiple complex structures. By using an indexing scheme which exploits multiple structures, we can process queries efficiently with minimal storage overhead.

A simulation testbed architecture which is particularly amenable to rapid-prototyping applications is described. It comprises a three-tier modular hybrid simulator made up of actual system components, conventional numeric functional simulation models, and a set of behavioral knowledge-based representations which model hardware and software functions in terms of functional states, inputs and outputs. The simulation modules are strongly linked and embedded in an object-oriented knowledge-capture and design-representation architecture. The system provides a flexible, reconfigurable model-building and scenario-based simulation environment. The requirements analysis process which led to the development of the concept and the major testbed components are discussed. The object-oriented modeling techniques and frame-based data structure which support the rapid-prototyping capabilities of the testbed and the interactive capabilities of the system are described.< >

Three useful modeling techniques for specifying discrete event simulation models are discussed. Hierarchical model specification provides for model specification at different levels of abstraction. Scaling of model elements provides for the combination of similarly structured and parallel operating model elements into arrays of both fixed and dynamic sizes. Reuse of model elements allows for the repeated use of model element specifications. The Hierarchical Control Flow Graph Model paradigm is used to demonstrate the techniques discussed.

Drying is an important process in paper manufacturing, where steam heated cylinders are used to dry paper. Control of the moisture content is accomplished by adjusting the steam pressure in the cylinders. This paper presents a nonlinear dynamic model, based on heat and mass balances for steam, cylinder, and paper. It is implemented in the object-oriented modeling language Modelica and is used to evaluate MPC control of a new process structure in the drying section, with promising results

To investigate the underlying principles of a robotic system's design and applications, appropriate specification and modeling tools which can facilitate the quantitative analysis as well as the qualitative analysis involving complex and/or dynamic data and relationships are essential. In this paper, advanced features embodied by dynamic role facilities have been introduced into a conventional object-oriented model, which facilitates the specification and modeling of robotic systems in a natural, incremental and systematic way. The model supports both the top-down and bottom-up design methodologies, as well as the computation of forward kinematics of the robots. With the analysis based on the communications among different roles, one can have further information about the cooperative behaviour and activities among multiple robots. The prototype system has been implemented in Lisp.
