OmniPaint: Mastering object-oriented Editing via Disentangled Insertion-Removal Inpainting

Diffusion-based generative models have revolutionized object-oriented image editing, yet their deployment in realistic object removal and insertion remains hampered by challenges such as the intricate interplay of physical effects and insufficient paired training data. In this work, we introduce OmniPaint, a unified framework that re-conceptualizes object removal and insertion as interdependent processes rather than isolated tasks. Leveraging a pre-trained diffusion prior along with a progressive training pipeline comprising initial paired sample optimization and subsequent large-scale unpaired refinement via CycleFlow, OmniPaint achieves precise foreground elimination and seamless object insertion while faithfully preserving scene geometry and intrinsic properties. Furthermore, our novel CFD metric offers a robust, reference-free evaluation of context consistency and object hallucination, establishing a new benchmark for high-fidelity image editing. Design patterns are best practices for known problems in a specific context, and many have been proposed in different domains (e.g. object-oriented programming and microservices). However, blockchain interoperability is a recent area of work, and little effort has been made to identify patterns that help software architects design their interoperability solutions. Without this knowledge, solving blockchain interoperability becomes complex and costly. This work aimed to identify design patterns in existing interoperability solutions. Through observing 35 blockchain interoperability solutions, we identified four new patterns and two already identified patterns in the literature. A detailed specification was built using the Alexandrian template and was evaluated with five semi-structured interviews with blockchain experts regarding its clarity, completeness, and utility. The results showed that all interviewees identified the patterns. However, patterns' specifications have different degrees of clarity, completeness, and utility. Finally, all interviewees thought that the proposed patterns might be helpful to software architects in their first blockchain interoperability project.

ECS-Grid is the first data-oriented real-time electromagnetic transient simulation platform for cyber-physical power systems (CPPS). Traditional simulation tools are constrained by object-oriented programming (OOP) architecture, which is now a significant obstruction to creating a comprehensive cyber-physical simulation. Therefore, the proposed ECS-Grid platform follows a new data-oriented paradigm based on an entity-component-system (ECS) framework, which delivers higher flexibility, extensibility, scalability, and performance to support cyber-physical system research. ECS-Grid proposes a layer of virtual intelligent electronic devices (vIEDs) to model IEDs in CPPSs. The vIEDs directly talk to physical components and communicate asynchronously with cyber services via the proposed high-performance JSON-like binary protocol. Tests with the islanding and the man-in-the-middle cyberattack scenarios on a 711-node ac–dc microgrid cluster based on a modified CIGRE 15-Bus system are performed and give accurate results. A faster-than-real-time performance is achieved on the 10th Gen Intel Core TM i7 computer, and real-time performance is achieved on distributed embedded NVIDIA Jetson platform. The ECS-Grid design and test results demonstrate the potential of the ECS data-oriented paradigm and may inspire the renovation of industrial simulation software.

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments have reached an era of unprecedented precision and complexity. Aiming to detect the primordial B-mode polarization signal, these experiments will soon be equipped with $10^{4}$ to $10^{5}$ detectors. Consequently, future CMB missions will face the substantial challenge of efficiently processing vast amounts of raw data to produce the initial scientific outputs - the sky maps - within a reasonable time frame and with available computational resources. To address this, we introduce BrahMap, a new map-making framework that will be scalable across both CPU and GPU platforms. Implemented in C++ with a user-friendly Python interface for handling sparse linear systems, BrahMap employs advanced numerical analysis and high-performance computing techniques to maximize the use of super-computing infrastructure. This work features an overview of the BrahMap’s capabilities and preliminary performance scaling results, with application to a generic CMB polarization experiment.

Several research works have been performed on the spectrum-based fault localization (SBFL) technique that aims to identify and isolate suspicious errors during software development in traditional programming paradigms such as imperative and object-oriented programming. After extensive research, I noticed that there seem to be few research works that connect SBFL and reactive programming. Since reactive programming is centered on data streams and the propagation of changes where states are updated asynchronously in response to external stimuli, the traditional coverage-based spectrum seems to be less appropriate for reactive programs. Having considered these limitations, my aim is to investigate and develop a new technique to apply and enhance the traditional SBFL for reactive programming. In this doctoral symposium, I present my research topic, the relevant research questions based on the topic, and outline some plans to be considered in the remaining period of my PhD research work.

In object-oriented programming, it is reasonable to hypothesize that smaller classes with fewer methods are less complex. Should this hypothesis hold true, it would be advisable for programmers to design classes with fewer methods, as complexity significantly contributes to poor maintainability. To test this assumption, we analyzed 862,517 Java classes from 1,000 open GitHub repositories. Our findings indicate a strong Pearson correlation of 0.79 between the cumulative McCabe’s Cyclomatic Complexity (CC) of all class methods and the number of methods, a metric known as Response for Class (RFC). © 2024, CC BY.

Modern building automation systems are subject to major challenges. Their architecture becomes increasingly diversified. Recent developments, such as increased digitization and Internet of Things (IoT) enable new implementation and application opportunities. The main modeling method regarding the development and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of buildings is referred to Building Information Modeling (BIM).In this paper, we describe how planning rules sets from existing tools can be split, structured, and integrated with established external BIM-based building planning tools to improve the collaboration between various trades. In our case study, we utilized Autodesk Revit as an example of a BIM-based planning tool that can be used for the proposed integration approach.

Oversight in Action: Experiences with Instructor-Moderated LLM Responses in an Online Discussion Forum

The integration of large language models (LLMs) into computing education offers many potential benefits to student learning, and several novel pedagogical approaches have been reported in the literature. However LLMs also present challenges, one of the most commonly cited being that of student over-reliance. This challenge is compounded by the fact that LLMs are always available to provide instant help and solutions to students, which can undermine their ability to independently solve problems and diagnose and resolve errors. Providing instructor oversight of LLM-generated content can mitigate this problem, however it is often not practical in real-time learning contexts. Online class discussion forums, which are widely used in computing education, present an opportunity for exploring instructor oversight because they operate asynchronously. Unlike real-time interactions, the discussion forum format aligns with the expectation that responses may take time, making oversight not only feasible but also pedagogically appropriate. In this practitioner paper, we present the design, deployment, and evaluation of a ‘bot’ module that is controlled by the instructor, and integrated into an online discussion forum. The bot assists the instructor by generating draft responses to student questions, which are reviewed, modified, and approved before release. Key features include the ability to leverage course materials, access archived discussions, and publish responses anonymously to encourage open participation. We report our experiences using this tool in a 12-week second-year software engineering course on object-oriented programming. Instructor feedback confirmed the tool successfully alleviated workload but highlighted a need for improvement in handling complex, context-dependent queries. object affordance reasoning, the ability to infer object functionalities based on physical properties, is fundamental for task-oriented planning and activities in both humans and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This capability, required for planning and executing daily activities in a task-oriented manner, relies on commonsense knowledge of object physics and functionalities, extending beyond simple object recognition. Current computational models for affordance reasoning from perception lack generalizability, limiting their applicability in novel scenarios. Meanwhile, comprehensive Large Language Models (LLMs) with emerging reasoning capabilities are challenging to deploy on local devices for task-oriented manipulations. Here, we introduce LVIS-Aff, a large-scale dataset comprising 1,496 tasks and 119k images, designed to enhance the generalizability of affordance reasoning from perception. Utilizing this dataset, we develop Afford-X, an end-to-end trainable affordance reasoning model that incorporates Verb Attention and Bi-Fusion modules to improve multi-modal understanding. This model achieves up to a 12.1% performance improvement over the best-reported results from non-LLM methods, while also demonstrating a 1.2% enhancement compared to our previous conference paper. Additionally, it maintains a compact 187M parameter size and infers nearly 50 times faster than the GPT-4V API. Our work demonstrates the potential for efficient, generalizable affordance reasoning models that can be deployed on local devices for task-oriented manipulations. We showcase Afford-X’s effectiveness in enabling task-oriented manipulations for robots across various tasks and environments, underscoring its efficiency and broad implications for advancing robotics and AI systems in real-world applications. © 2025, CC BY.
