Query Intent classifier is used by a search engine to classify an online search query whether having a certain type of intent such as adult intent or commercial intent. Training such classifiers for each language is a supervised machine learning task that requires a large amount of labeled training queries. The manual annotation of training queries for each new emerging language using human judges is expensive, error-prone and time consuming. In this paper, we leverage the existing query classifiers in a source language and the abundant unlabeled queries in the query log of the underserved target language to reduce the cost and automate the training data annotation process. The most clicked search results of a query are used to predict the intent of this query instead of human judges. Document classifier is trained on hidden topics extracted by latent semantic indexing from the translation of source language documents into the target language. The experimental results, using English as the source language and Arabic as the target one, show that the proposed unsupervised method has trained support vector machines as Arabic query classifiers to detect both commercial and health intent without need for human-judged Arabic queries. The unsupervised classifiers outperform the classifiers based on direct query translation and the decision fusion of both classifier is superior.

The system entered into this year's shared transliteration evaluation is implemented within a phrase-based statistical machine transliteration (SMT) framework. The system is based on a joint source-channel model in combination with a target language model and models to control the length of the sequences generated. The joint source-channel model was trained using a many-to-many Bayesian bilingual alignment. The focus of this year's system is on input representation. In order attempt to mitigate data sparseness issues in the joint source-channel model, we augmented the system with recurrent neural network (RNN) models that can learn to project the grapheme set onto a smaller hidden representation. We performed experiments on development data to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach. Our results show that using an RNN language model can improve performance for language pairs with large grapheme sets on the target side.

For effective articulatory feedback in computer-assisted pronunciation training (CAPT) systems, we address effective articulatory models of second language (L2) learners' speech without using such data, which is difficult to collect and annotate in a large scale. Context-dependent articulatory attributes (placement and manner of articulation) are modeled based on deep neural network (DNN). In order to efficiently train the non-native articulatory models, we exploit large speech corpora of native and target language to model inter-language phenomena. This multi-lingual learning is then combined with multi-task learning, which uses phone-classification as a sub-task. These methods are applied to Mandarin Chinese pronunciation learning by Japanese native speakers. Effects are confirmed in the native attribute classification and pronunciation error detection of non-native speech.

This work proposes to adapt an existing general SMT model for the task of translating queries that are subsequently going to be used to retrieve information from a target language collection. In the scenario that we focus on access to the document collection itself is not available and changes to the IR model are not possible. We propose two ways to achieve the adaptation effect and both of them are aimed at tuning parameter weights on a set of parallel queries. The first approach is via a standard tuning procedure optimizing for BLEU score and the second one is via a reranking approach optimizing for MAP score. We also extend the second approach by using syntax-based features. Our experiments show improvements of 1-2.5 in terms of MAP score over the retrieval with the non-adapted translation. We show that these improvements are due both to the integration of the adaptation and syntax-features for the query translation task.

Multilingual Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have been successfully used to exploit out-of-language data to improve under-resourced ASR. In this paper, we improve on a multilingual DNN by utilizing low-rank factorization (LRF) of weight matrices via Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to sparsify a multilingual DNN. LRF was previously used for monolingual DNNs, yielding large computational savings without a significant loss in recognition accuracy. In this work, we show that properly applying LRF on a multilingual DNN can improve recognition accuracy for multiple low-resource ASR configurations. First, only the final weight layer is factorized. Since the output weight layer needs to be trained with language specific data, reducing the number of parameters is beneficial for under-resourced languages. It is common in multilingual DNN speech recognition, to further adapt the full neural network through retraining of the multilingual DNN on target language data. Again we observe that in low-resource situations, this adaptation can bring significant improvement if LRF is applied to all hidden layers. We demonstrate the positive effect of LRF in two very different scenarios: one is a phone recognition task for two related languages and the other is a word recognition task using five different languages from the GlobalPhone dataset.

We present a variant of phrase-based SMT that uses source-side parsing and a constituent reordering model based on word alignments in the word-aligned training corpus to predict hierarchical block-wise reordering of the input. Multiple possible translation orders are represented compactly in a source order lattice. This source order lattice is then annotated with phrase-level translations to form a lattice of tokens in the target language. Various feature functions are combined in a log-linear fashion to evaluate paths through that lattice.

The processing of parallel corpus plays very crucial role for improving the overall performance in Phrase Based Statistical Machine Translation systems (PB-SMT). In this paper the automatic alignments of different kind of chunks have been studied that boosts up the word alignment as well as the machine translation quality. Single-tokenization of Noun-noun MWEs, phrasal preposition (source side only) and reduplicated phrases (target side only) and the alignment of named entities and complex predicates provide the best SMT model for bootstrapping. Automatic bootstrapping on the alignment of various chunks makes significant gains over the previous best English-Bengali PB-SMT system. The source chunks are translated into the target language using the PB-SMT system and the translated chunks are compared with the original target chunk. The aligned chunks increase the size of the parallel corpus. The processes are run in a bootstrapping manner until all the source chunks have been aligned with the target chunks or no new chunk alignment is identified by the bootstrapping process. The proposed system achieves significant improvements (2.25 BLEU over the best System and 8.63 BLEU points absolute over the baseline system, 98.74% relative improvement over the baseline system) on an English- Bengali translation task.

In the IARPA sponsored program BABEL we are faced with the challenge of training automatic speech recognition systems in sparse data conditions in very little time. In this paper we show that by using multilingual bootstrapping techniques in combination with multilingual deep belief bottle neck features that are only fine tuned on the target language the training time of an LVCSR system can be essentially halved while the word error rate stays the same. We show this for recognition systems on Tagalog, making use of multilingual systems trained on the other four languages of the Babel base period: Cantonese, Pashto, Turkish, and Vietnamese.

Blockchain technology is an emerging technology that allows new forms of decentralized architectures, designed to generate trust among users, without the intervention of mediators or knowledge between the parties. Since 2015, thanks to the introduction of Smart Contracts by Ethereum, it is possible to run programs on the blockchain, greatly extending the potential of this technology. The programming of Smart Contract, through the Solidity language is different from the traditional one. First of all, any action that requires to modify the blockchain costs gas, which corresponds to a fraction of the currency used by that given blockchain, and therefore to real money. Gas optimization is a unique challenge in this context and has obvious implications. This document aims to provide a set of design patterns and tips to help gas saving in developing Smart Contracts on Ethereum. The provided patterns are presented divided into five main categories, based on their features.
