The development of an innovative clinical decision-support project such as the University of Minnesota's Clinical Workstation initiative mandates the use of modern client-server network architectures. Preexisting conventional laboratory information systems (LIS) cannot be quickly replaced with client-server equivalents because of the cost and relative unavailability of such systems. Thus, embedding strategies that effectively integrate legacy information systems are needed. Our strategy led to the adoption of a multi-layered connection architecture that provides a data feed from our existing LIS to a new network-based relational database management system. By careful design, we maximize the use of open standards in our layered connection structure to provide data, requisition, or event messaging in several formats. Each layer is optimized to provide needed services to existing hospital clients and is well positioned to support future hospital network clients.

In many firms 50% and more of software development capacities are absorbed by maintenance tasks. To solve the maintenance problems associated with old programs methods and tools of software renovation have been developed. Beginning with a description of the maintenance problem we depict the components of program renovation (restructuring, reverse engineering, reengineering) and explore the possibilities of tool support. Because methods of object-orientation promise a distinct reduction of maintenance costs in the area of software newdevelopment we propose program renovation with transition in an object-oriented architecture in the framework of an object-oriented reengineering.

The major aim of this research work was to develop an Intelligent Design Environment for Supporting Concurrent Product and Process Design. The system was designed in such a way to enable users to monitor the design as it progresses and to improve quality and reduce the cost. It has also the facility to examine if the designed part can be manufactured in house with the available manufacturing facilities and provides feedback related to machining concerns that may arise. The development process was passed through three fundamental stages to accomplish the proposed paradigm These stages were: first, developing a technique for automated feature recognition from a solid modeller, secondly, linking a Knowledge-based with a Solid Modelling and a Process Planning System and finally, building a Constraint Knowledge-based System which could provide feedback connected with manufacturability concerns such as process limits or design inconsistencies. It also gives a predictable machining cost estimation and continuous feedback to designers about possible manufacturing issues or requirements as the design proceeds. Developing an approach for feature recognition was substantial for a number of reasons; most solid modellers available today represent part geometry in terms of low-level geometric and topological entities such as faces, loops, edges, surfaces, curves and points. These modellers do not provide higher level abstractions of a part that relate directly to certain design functionalities or manufacturing characteristics. Therefore, these systems cannot be used directly to derive applications such as design analysis, machining cost estimation or process planning which are the core of this research. PARC++ is a system that supports object-oriented parallel programming in C++. PARC++ provides the user with a set of predefined C++ classes that can easily be used for the construction of parallel C++ programs. With the help of PARC++ objects, the programmer is able to create and start new processes (threads), to synchronize their activities (Blocklock, Monitor) and to manage communication via message passing (Mailbox). PARC++ is written in C++ and currently runs on top of the EMEX operating system on a FORCE machine with 11 processing elements and an EDS (European Declarative System) with 28 processing elements. This paper contributes to the trend with a discussion of a knowledge–based, object–oriented problem–solving method. In this method the knowledge required to analyse the problem and to synthesize the solution is embedded into objects. In January 1993, Pyramid Resources began a one year project to implement a plant-wide supervisory expert control system at a large U.S. copper concentrator. The objective of this control system was and continues to be to improve plant profitability through unit operation optimization and global integration of the individual control strategies. This paper documents the key aspects of the project, including: economic and metallurgical benefits, system architecture, concepts of implementation, process control strategies, practical aspects of implementation and conclusions. The expert control system has been used over ninety-five percent of the time since its completion and the benefits are estimated to exceed $50,000 per day.
