In a multi-agent society when agents operate on common platforms, in addition to routine information exchanges some agents try to induce other agents to their own and social benefits. This induction can be achieved through direct interactions among participating agents. However, in situations when induction is not possible through direct interaction, an intended induction may still be achieved through a Mediator agent. In this paper, we investigate the role of a mediator agent in an induction process and formalize the concepts by proposing an agent framework, We utilize an object-oriented approach for implementation of the proposed framework.

This paper describes an implementation procedure of distributed control software for robot-based manufacturing systems. Robots and other devices such as conveyors and manufacturing machines are defined as object-oriented communicating sequential processes. A modular and hierarchical approach is adopted to define a set of Petri net type diagrams, which represent concurrent control processes for such devices, and asynchronous and synchronous interactions in global process interaction nets. Operational specifications are directly transformed to executable codes in a parallel programming language, such as occam. Implementations of control software on a multiprocessing environment and transputer networks are comparatively evaluated.

Although there are many commercial real-time micro-kernel available on the market today, the common prejudices against their use for implementing control algorithms are still justified. Some of them are too complex and overhead-prone while others are tiny and efficient but don't provide all those services that are actually required by real-time applications. This is especially true regarding communication support for distributed and embedded control systems. This paper focuses on a new design concept for real-time communication system (RCOS) platforms matching the quality and functional needs of a given distributed and embedded application. The approach is based on a library operating system (D reams * ) which allows for extremely fine-grained customizations to avoid systemlevel overhead. We will outline the architecture of D reams , show how customization is applied for interprocessor communication and present first results that demonstrate the impact of customization on system overhead.

The principal objective of this paper is to report on the development of a framework for intelligent modelling aimed at the formulation of models for science and engineering systems. After an introduction of the features of modelling, three aspects and three basic steps of particular relevance to the modelling framework are indicated. In particular, the knowledge structure of modelling will be considered in the context of both the modelling process and the functionality of system representation. The main body of the paper is concerned with describing the object-oriented information model for modelling which will form the heart of the knowledge-based system together with remarks on aspects of its usability.

In January 1993, Pyramid Resources began a one year project to implement a plant-wide supervisory expert control system at a large U.S. copper concentrator. The objective of this control system was and continues to be to improve plant profitability through unit operation optimization and global integration of the individual control strategies. This paper documents the key aspects of the project, including: economic and metallurgical benefits, system architecture, concepts of implementation, process control strategies, practical aspects of implementation and conclusions. The expert control system has been used over ninety-five percent of the time since its completion and the benefits are estimated to exceed $50,000 per day.

Planning and controlling of routing of intermodal transportation (e.g. continent-wide in Europe) has to consider heterogeneous restrictions prescribed by the ordering company or institution, by the involved carriers, unloaders, warehouses, authorities or receivers of the complete logistic chain. This often implies cascaded queries to and transactions through heterogeneous and geographically disclosed data bases in different countries. The logical consistency of these transactions is based on the constraint propagation and satisfaction along their implementation. An object-oriented approach for, is the concept of Aspect-orientedprogramming to inherit interfaces between objects (or object classes) through the whole transaction. This new concept is adapted to heterogeneous traffic data bases in routing tasks.
