According to the extensive 50-year-old body of knowledge in object-oriented programming and design, good software designs are, among other characteristics, lowly coupled, highly cohesive, extensible, comprehensible, and not fragile. However, with the increased complexity and heterogeneity of contemporary software, this might not be enough. This paper discusses the practical challenges of object-oriented design in modern software development. We focus on three main challenges: (1) how technologies, frameworks, and architectures pressure developers to make design decisions that they would not take in an ideal scenario, (2) the complexity of current real-world problems require developers to devise not only a single, but several models for the same problem that live and interact together, and (3) how existing quality assessment techniques for object-oriented design should go beyond high-level metrics. Finally, we propose an agenda for future research that should be tackled by both scientists and practitioners soon. This paper is a call for arms for more reality-oriented research on the object-oriented software design field.

During maintenance, understanding the source code is required to determine the part that is relevant to the current task. Usually, software developers and engineers depend on source code comments and documentation to understand the code. Unfortunately, descriptive comments are often outdated or not exist. Summarizing the source code automatically can assist in getting over the unavailability of the manually written comments. This paper proposes a technique to automatically generate natural language summaries for software classes written in object-oriented programming languages. The technique parses the program's source code and identifies the stereotype for the target class and its corresponding methods. A set of predefined heuristics are proposed to select the methods that should be reflected in the generated summaries. A case study has been conducted to validate the proposed technique. Results indicated that the generated summaries provide concise and accurate contextual information about the class and help the developers in understanding their source code.

Learning how to design and implement a program is hard. Teaching methods and textbooks on Java programming often treat a new subject in terms of syntax and examples. Little attention is paid to systematically designing programs with these new concepts. Research has shown that such a complex task requires not only conceptual knowledge, but also explicit procedural *** this paper, we investigate the effect of combining conceptual and procedural guidance to teaching and learning concurrent programming. We build on earlier research in which we have introduced such a structured design methodology which divides the development of multi-threaded Java programs into a sequence of explicit, manageable steps: the Steps *** present our experiences with applying the Steps Plan in an introductory course on object-oriented programming, with multithreading. The main questions addressed are: "What problems did the students encounter in direct relation to the Steps Plan?", and "What general problems surfaced?"As to the first question, two important issues were that using a relatively far developed sequential solution as a stepping stone towards a multi-threaded solution wrong-footed some students, and that remedying race condition situations turned out to be supported at a too high level of *** to the second question, two notable issues were that deciding on the right amount and type of concurrency by themselves is maybe too difficult for students at this level, and that the notion of (establishing) correctness or quality of a solution is, different from the sequential case, not intuitively clear to *** these issues, the paper recommends remedies and indicates directions for future work. We discuss the consequences for education as regards teaching materials and forms of teaching.

Development of quality object-oriented software contains security as an integral aspect of that process. During that process, a ceaseless burden on the developers was posed in order to maximize the development and at the same time to reduce the expense and time invested in security. In this paper, the authors analyzed metrics for object-oriented software in order to evaluate and identify the relation between metric value and security of the software. Identification of these relations was achieved by study of software vulnerabilities with code level metrics. By using OWASP classification of vulnerabilities and experimental results, we proved that there was relation between metric values and possible security issues in software. For experimental code analysis, we have developed special software called SOFTMET.

Search in repeated contexts can lead to increased search efficiency due to contextual cueing. Contextual cueing has mainly been investigated in two-dimensional displays. However, contextual cueing is affected by depth information as well as by the “realism” of the search environment. To investigate these aspects further, we present a guide to design contextual cueing experiments in virtual three-dimensional environments. Specifically, we provide a general introduction to the Unity gaming engine and scripting in C#. We will focus on experimental workflows, but also cover topics like timing precision, how to process and handle participants’ input, or how to create visual assets and manipulate aspects like color. Ultimately, we will turn the entire project into a virtual reality experiment. less

The current Marine Corps logistics structure distributes resources from a central point commonly known as the “Iron Mountain” to combat units throughout the battlespace. The Iron Mountain presents a substantial target for adversaries with precision-guided weapons or large-scale attack capabilities. This study explores the effects of replacing the Iron Mountain with a distributed network of mobile logistics support nodes. This “Iron Network” creates a smaller unpredictable target that is harder to locate while still providing logistics support to combat units. We create a simulation model to explore the factors affecting the resupply capabilities of an Iron Network and Iron Mountain in terms of time for service, unfulfilled requests, and resource requirements. The major findings of the modeling and simulation analysis indicate that this Iron Network structure is possible, but it requires some specific enablers. Asset and supply level visibility across the network are critical for success, as is responsive global logistical support. The best response times occur when vehicle utilization remains below 40%. Given enough vehicles and an accurate picture of the network’s resources, the Iron Network proves to be 79% faster than the Iron Mountain, while using 22% less vehicles and associated fuel and leaving 94% fewer requests unfulfilled.

START: A data preparation tool for crop simulation models using web-based soil databases

Soil profile data that characterize the physical and chemical properties of a soil are among the required set of inputs for ecological, crop and other dynamic simulation models. A web-based soil information system often provides the site-specific soil data of which formats are not readily compatible to crop models. The Soil daTA Retrieval Tool (START) was developed to automate a series of procedures for preparation of soil input data that includes the retrieval of soil profile data from the information system, reorganization of data, estimation of soil parameters, and creation of input files foi simulation models. In a case study, the START was implemented to support the SoilGrids database operated by the International Soil Reference and Information Center. It took about 0.33% of time for the START to create soil input files compared with manual preparation. These results suggest that the START could provide an efficient approach for preparation of soil input files especially for sites where little soil information is available.

The large-scale computer simulation of a system of physical fields governed by partial differential equations requires some means of approximating the mathematical limit of continuity. For example, conservation laws are often treated with a 'finite-volume' approach in which space is partitioned into a large number of small 'cells,' with fluxes through cell faces providing an intuitive discretization modeled on the mathematical definition of the divergence operator. Here we describe and make available Fortran 2003 classes furnishing extensible object-oriented implementations of simple meshes and the evolution of generic conserved currents thereon, along with individual 'unit test' programs and larger example problems demonstrating their use. These classes inaugurate the Mathematics division of our developing astrophysics simulation code GENASIS (General A strophysical Simulation System), which will be expanded over time to include additional meshing options, mathematical operations, solver types, and solver variations appropriate for many multiphysics applications. The difficulties present in the teaching object-oriented programming and Intelligent Tutoring Systems are exposed in this article. The usefulness of Intelligent Tutoring Systems taking into account technical data mining, among which include artificial neural networks, is explained. The author proposes a model, using data mining techniques, to extract and to analyze information from student interactions inside the platform in the teaching-learning process. The model takes into account the predominant types of intelligence in each student, in order to achieve more individualized solutions. An experiment was employed in order to measure system effectiveness, considering decrease in wrong attempts doing an exercise as a success criterion. The results show a positive impact in solving problems, improving the learning process.

Parallel and Distributed Computing (PDC) was traditionally viewed as an advanced subject reserved for elective graduate courses. The last decade has seen two areas with rapid growth, whose synergy is demanding new skills for software engineers in a modem multi-core world. The first has been society's increasing demand for software engineering solutions, evident in the integral role that software plays in daily life. Unlike traditional PDC applications in the scientific and engineering domains, modem software applications are interacting directly with millions of users on mainstream laptops, smartphones and tablets. The second trend is that of multi-core processors powering such devices, which is further fueling the potential of software applications. This paper proposes a Modern Parallel programming Framework that recognizes that successful software engineering in this domain involves a combination of hard skills and soft skills.
