A phenomenographic study uncovers variations in the way that the subjects are aware of a phenomenon. In the categories of description that represent the variations in awareness there are features that, through their variation, define the characteristics of the categories. Teaching seeks to foster a change in the way that the learner is aware of a phenomenon through opening up a space of learning. This paper outlines the way that the outcome spaces from a phenomenographic study can be used to plan a teaching programme that utilises variations in the features. It discusses a strategy for teaching programming based on a phenomenographic study of practitioner conceptions of an object-oriented program. The strategy covers features related to the nature of an object-oriented program.

Environmental Awareness for Sensor and Emitter Employment (EASEE) is a flexible, object-oriented software design for predicting environmental effects on the performance of battlefield sensors and detectability of signal emitters. Its decision-support framework facilitates many sensor and emitter modalities and can be incorporated into battlespace command and control (C2) systems. Other potential applications include immersive simulation, force-on-force simulation, and virtual prototyping of sensor systems and signal-processing algorithms. By identifying and encoding common characteristics of Army problems involving multimodal signal transmission and sensing into a flexible software architecture in the Java programming language, EASEE seeks to provide an application interface enabling rapid integration of diverse signal-generation, propagation, and sensor models that can be implemented in many client-server environments. Its explicit probabilistic modeling of signals, systematic consideration of many complex environmental and mission-related factors affecting signal generation and propagation, and computation of statistical metrics characterizing sensor performance facilitate a highly flexible approach to signal modeling and simulation. EASEE aims to integrate many disparate statistical formulations for modeling and processing many types of signals, including infrared, acoustic, seismic, radiofrequency, and chemical/biological. EASEE includes objects for representing sensor data, inferences for target detection and/or direction, signal transmission and processing, and state information (such as time and place). Various transmission and processing objects are further grouped into platform objects, which fuse data to make various probabilistic predictions of interest. objects representing atmospheric and terrain environments with varying degrees of fidelity enable modeling of signal generation and propagation in diverse and complex environments.

Design patterns have been widely accepted as a solution for solving recurring design problems in object oriented development. Reifications of design patterns can vary from one development environment to another, and use of inappropriate reifications may impose a serious threat to quality of a software system. In this paper, we propose an approach to applying the profile mechanism in reifying a design pattern. Central to this approach are stereotypes that are defined in a profile and used to represent different roles in a design pattern. Developers can apply these stereotypes in their application model when design patterns are used. The advantage of the profile mechanism is that developers can 1) define their own reification of a pattern in a profile based on a specific software system, and 2) find errors in an application model via the conformance checking of the model against the profile. More importantly, we apply our existing tool called ICER, which is based on the profile mechanism, to provide automatic checking for the application of design patterns. To illustrate the advantage of the profile mechanism supported by ICER, we show the different reifications for the Observer pattern. Last, experimental results show that ICER does not suffer from the scalability problem as the size of an application model increases.

Numerous class cohesion metrics can be found in the literature. However, they end up capturing different aspects of cohesion. Which metric is best suited for a given situation is always a critical question. This work focuses on exploring the strengths and weaknesses of each of the selected cohesion metrics. The issues of their applicability to capture varying strengths of cohesion and ability to identify disparate classes are addressed. The metrics are classified into five categories based on their computational approaches. Diversity and similarity among these metrics are brought out. The discussion demonstrates uses of cohesion metrics with the help of typical representative situations.

Industrial automation is largely based on PLC-based control systems. PLCs are today mostly programmed in the languages of the IEC 61131 standard which are not ready to meet the new challenges of widely distributed automation systems. Currently, different solutions are available from industry and research: an extension of IEC 61131 which includes object oriented programming, the adoption of the new standard IEC 61499 or the implementation of supervisory control. All these solutions present different problems which are briefly recalled in the paper. To overcome some of these problems in this paper it is shown that a novel approach based on supervisory control and IEC 61131 can be immediately used to meet the new requirements.

This contribution presents a finite element based computational framework and the related algorithms for the virtual design and simulation of controlled smart lightweight membrane structures. Form finding is used to determine the optimal structural shape of tensile structures from an inverse formulation of equilibrium. Also the cutting pattern generation of membranes is integrated in the design process in order to consider fabrication effects already in the earliest possible stage. Active control is adopted for vibration suppression under external loads like e.g. wind. Controller design is based on a state space model that is derived from the finite element model and that preserves the geometrically nonlinear equilibrium state and the prestress effects of the membrane. Discrete time control via an optimal linearquadratic- Gaussian (LQG) regulator is applied. The presented methods and algorithms of all simulation and design steps are illustrated and verified at the example of a controlled 4-point tent.

The expression of reactive behaviour is a significant and important requirement in robotic software engineering, since robots must cope with a wide range of unpredictable events and environments. However it is important that the semantics for reactive expression can be used across different architectures and languages. The RADAR robot programming language provides architecture- and language-independent semantics for managing the reactive parts of robot software together with the deliberative parts, allowing greater interaction between the two. We evaluate the architecture-independence of RADAR, as an example, by implementing its reactive semantics using the OpenRTM-aist component-based, distributed architecture. Our goal is to evaluate what limitations the choice of implementation environment may place on the capabilities of such an architecture-independent semantics. In our implementation, we aimed to produce a standard OpenRTM-aist system using the RADAR semantics. We have found that the architecture-independent semantics concept works well in the case of RADAR, although some specific improvements are needed for full interaction between deliberative and reactive sections of robotic software.

In the last years many standards have been created for the industrial control domain. Some have found wide adoption in the industiy, while others seem to never leave the stage of a promising technology. An example of the first type is ISA 88, that defines an architectural design for control applications for the batch process industiy. The author is of the opinion that IEC 61499 is an example of the latter. In this paper the author analyzes how the design architecture defined in ISA 88 may be implemented using the programming framework defined in IEC 61499. Even though ISA 88 and IEC 61499 both follow an event based and object-oriented approach, the author uncovers a fundamental constraint of the IEC 61499 related to the dynamic invocation of services from distinct object instances. Without tiying to extend the IEC 61499 standard, two approaches are presented to work around this constraint.

Aspect oriented programming (AOP) aims at addressing the problem of the crosscutting concerns (e. g. logging, validation, transaction etc.), those functionalities that are scattered among several modules in a given system. Aspects can be defined to modularize such concerns. In this work, we focus on the most popular MVC pattern in software architecture pattern, and introduce the aspect-oriented programming ideas into the MVC model with Unified Modeling Language (UML), also we propose a model of aspectoriented MVC pattern, which extracts crosscutting concerns of going through the system to form an aspect layer and uses the configuration file to statement the point of weaving. To assess the effects of the idea on MVC pattern, an actual system is carried out. In the end, we report the results of the pattern of the feasibility and superiority.

Most of the current state of the art motion planning software libraries are not easily interchangeable, because core concepts are represented with different data structures, application programming interfaces (API) are not compatible, or algorithms are encapsulated in modules organized in mutually exclusive abstraction hierarchies. These problems limit the possibility to reuse different libraries in the same application interchangeably and to compare their quality attributes (performance, completeness, etc.). An approach to overcome these shortcomings is refactoring, a technique that aims to restructure a set of existing software libraries without affecting their external behavior in order to harmonize their architecture, data structures, and APIs. This paper presents a component-based refactoring approach that has allowed the transition from motion planning libraries, taking the object-oriented framework CoPP as basis, to a component-based system. In particular we describe a four-step application of well-known architecture refactoring patterns that redistributes the responsibilities among the classes, harmonizes the common data structures and reduces the coupling degree. The obtained system represents a composition of reusable components that are easy to customize and offer different algorithms to resolve the same problem. In this way the user could quickly compile a new motion planning application by simply choosing which algorithm to use for each functionality.
