This research aims to examine whether the use of computer program visualization software could help students to improve their performance and have long-term effects on their attitudes towards objected-oriented programming (OOP). The computer program visualization software, Jeliot3, was used in this research as a learning tool for Java programming. The experiment was conducted with 54 students, divided equally into two Sections. All of them are studying in the information technology program at a private university in Thailand. The experimental results showed that, after controlling for the demographics and backgrounds of the students, the use of Jeliot3 could help students improve their learning performance in OOP and Java programming and obtain higher scores than those who did not use Jeliot3. However, it was found that the use of Jeliot3 did not affect students' long-term attitudes toward OOP and Java programming.

Service-oriented architectures and systems designs are powerful concerning reusability of functional blocks and hiding implementation details from functional interfaces. But to compose a complete application, often central entities and engines are required for processing a specific sequence of service. In component-based designs the component itself is capable of describing both not only their offered services and interfaces but also dependencies on other services and interfaces to fulfill a complete task or application logic. This paper investigates on how to transfer and enhance exiting component-based approaches, already known from business applications, into the domain of embedded web services environments. Special focus is on the Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) technology which features service orientation also in device centric applications. This paper introduces a new approach to create applications, based on services provided by devices deployed with DPWS, in an abstract and dynamic way.

We introduce a domain specific object-oriented data model for the high-tech discrete manufacturing on the example of the semiconductor company Infineon Technologies AG. This model is needed to describe the complex supply chain of a global company in the competitive semiconductor arena with frequent product changes. However, the data model alone is not solving all problems. For this we need e. g. event-driven internet-based workflows. To get those in a structured way, we show possibilities to come from an object-oriented data model to object-oriented business processes based on existing process models. Two ways - one with SysML and one with ARIS - are shown conceptually and are discussed. An outlook is given on how this approach will provide internet-based workflows on the one hand, and it also shows up process improvement potentials on the other hand.

Environmental Awareness for Sensor and Emitter Employment (EASEE) is a flexible, object-oriented software design for predicting environmental effects on the performance of battlefield sensors and detectability of signal emitters. Its decision-support framework facilitates many sensor and emitter modalities and can be incorporated into battlespace command and control (C2) systems. Other potential applications include immersive simulation, force-on-force simulation, and virtual prototyping of sensor systems and signal-processing algorithms. By identifying and encoding common characteristics of Army problems involving multimodal signal transmission and sensing into a flexible software architecture in the Java programming language, EASEE seeks to provide an application interface enabling rapid integration of diverse signal-generation, propagation, and sensor models that can be implemented in many client-server environments. Its explicit probabilistic modeling of signals, systematic consideration of many complex environmental and mission-related factors affecting signal generation and propagation, and computation of statistical metrics characterizing sensor performance facilitate a highly flexible approach to signal modeling and simulation. EASEE aims to integrate many disparate statistical formulations for modeling and processing many types of signals, including infrared, acoustic, seismic, radiofrequency, and chemical/biological. EASEE includes objects for representing sensor data, inferences for target detection and/or direction, signal transmission and processing, and state information (such as time and place). Various transmission and processing objects are further grouped into platform objects, which fuse data to make various probabilistic predictions of interest. objects representing atmospheric and terrain environments with varying degrees of fidelity enable modeling of signal generation and propagation in diverse and complex environments.

Design patterns have been widely accepted as a solution for solving recurring design problems in object oriented development. Reifications of design patterns can vary from one development environment to another, and use of inappropriate reifications may impose a serious threat to quality of a software system. In this paper, we propose an approach to applying the profile mechanism in reifying a design pattern. Central to this approach are stereotypes that are defined in a profile and used to represent different roles in a design pattern. Developers can apply these stereotypes in their application model when design patterns are used. The advantage of the profile mechanism is that developers can 1) define their own reification of a pattern in a profile based on a specific software system, and 2) find errors in an application model via the conformance checking of the model against the profile. More importantly, we apply our existing tool called ICER, which is based on the profile mechanism, to provide automatic checking for the application of design patterns. To illustrate the advantage of the profile mechanism supported by ICER, we show the different reifications for the Observer pattern. Last, experimental results show that ICER does not suffer from the scalability problem as the size of an application model increases.

Educators recommend that students become acquainted with different programming paradigms in order to acquire alternative ways of computational thinking [3] and various approaches for problem solving [2]. Since students, learning different paradigms show both, positive and negative transfer effects, instructors should address it directly in the study track by relating to the characteristics of each paradigm, and specifically to the differences and similarities between them. In this poster, we investigate two programming paradigms- object-oriented programming and logic programming in the context of using inheritance for knowledge representation and problem solving.

Migrating legacy object-oriented system functionalities to SOA environment is a important problem that frequently arises in many system maintenance and integration tasks. A service is often implemented by complex collaborations of many objects in an object-oriented system. Such complexity brings impedance mismatch between service and object. Moreover, the delocalized nature of object-oriented system, where the code associated with a service is distributed across many interrelated objects, make this problem even more challenging. This paper presents a four-staged approach that extracts services from legacy object-oriented systems with source code and documents. In the first stage source code of legacy system is loaded and preprocessed to form different modules according to the explicit dependencies among classes. While preprocessing, some aspect code is also embedded to intercept and log execution traces of system as well as to store states of involved objects. In the second stage, services, which represent system-level business functionalities, are modeled with use cases. Useful test cases are in turn generated from these use cases to identify services. In the third stage, the modularized and intercepted system is executed driven by generated test cases and the execution logs and object states are recorded. In the last stage, services are located and extracted by analyzing the execution logs and restoring the object states. The approach is supported by an integrated tool and the evaluation on five open-source systems yields encouraging result and demonstrates the practical applicability of the approach.

During execution, an objected-oriented program typically creates a large number of objects. This research considers the distribution of those objects that share a common superclass. If this distribution is uniform then all subclasses are equally likely to be instantiated. However, if not, then the lack of uniformity can be exploited by giving preferential treatment to the dominant class (or classes). For example, a tester might spend greater testing resources on the dominant class while an engineer refactoring the code might begin with a more dominant class. An experiment designed to investigate the distribution of subclass instantiations was performed using eight Java programs containing almost half a million lines of code and just over three thousand classes. The results show that outside a few infrequent instances, most distributions are heavily skewed.

Interoperability of constituent systems is the primary challenge for a large-scale distributed Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) simulation activity. The grand challenge is to integrate, for the first time, all aspects of interoperability necessary not only to enable but to ensure interoperability throughout an large-scale LVC system. Previously, a handful of these aspects of interoperability have been partially addressed in isolation. Only an integrated solution of all aspects of interoperability into a computer-enforceable architecture will make possible attaining the goal of ensuring interoperability throughout a large-scale LVC activity. The enforceable nature of the LVC activity models implies that the models accurately reflect the "reality" of the LVC activity. Without enforcement, the complex nature of the myriads of components would tend to introduce inaccuracies into models, ultimately rendering those models useless. Actual enforcement of the models elevates the LVC software systems' usefulness to a level that would otherwise be unattainable in practice. Preparing for an LVC activity involves answering deceptively simple questions such as, "Will an individual piece of software work during this LVC activity?" At present, reliably answering such questions is impossible, because no detailed, precise, and accurate descriptions of the software or the LVC event exist. Other simple questions such as, "Which data collection systems are suitable for use in this LVC activity?" are equally difficult to answer reliably. This paper discusses the need for computer-enforceable models of individual software components as well as entire LVC activities, along with creating new extensions to the existing TENA object modeling language and to the TENA Middleware itself.

Industrial automation is largely based on PLC-based control systems. PLCs are today mostly programmed in the languages of the IEC 61131 standard which are not ready to meet the new challenges of widely distributed automation systems. Currently, different solutions are available from industry and research: an extension of IEC 61131 which includes object oriented programming, the adoption of the new standard IEC 61499 or the implementation of supervisory control. All these solutions present different problems which are briefly recalled in the paper. To overcome some of these problems in this paper it is shown that a novel approach based on supervisory control and IEC 61131 can be immediately used to meet the new requirements.
