Extending the UML concepts to transform natural language queries with fuzzy semantics into SQL

Database applications tend toward getting more versatile and broader to comply with the expansion of various organizations. However, naive users usually suffer from accessing data arbitrarily by using formal query languages. Therefore, we believe that accessing databases using natural language constructs will become a popular interface in the future. The concept of object-oriented modeling makes the real world to be well represented or expressed in some kinds of logical form. Since the class diagram in UML is used to model the static relationships of databases, in this paper, we intend to study how to extend the UML class diagram representations to capture natural language queries with fuzzy semantics. By referring to the conceptual schema throughout the class diagram representation, we propose a methodology to map natural language constructs into the corresponding class diagram and employ Structured object Model (SOM) methodology to transform the natural language queries into SQL statements for query executions. Moreover, our approach can handle queries containing vague terms specified in fuzzy modifiers, like 'good' or 'bad'. By our approach, users obtain not only the query answers but also the corresponding degree of vagueness, which can be regarded as the same way we are thinking. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Controlled vocabularies in OODBs: modeling issues and implementation

A major problem that arises in many large application domains is the discrepancy among terminologies of different information systems. The terms used by the information systems of one organization may not agree with the terms used by another organization even when they are in the same domain. Such a situation clearly impedes communication and the sharing of information, and decreases the efficiency of doing business. Problems of this nature can be overcome using a controlled vocabulary (CV), a system of concepts that consolidates and unifies the terminologies of a domain. However, CVs are large and complex and difficult to comprehend. This paper presents a methodology for representing a semantic network-based CV as an object-oriented database (OODB). We call such a representation an object-oriented Vocabulary Repository (OOVR). The methodology is based on a structural analysis and partitioning of the source CV. The representation of a CV as an OOVR offers both the level of support typical of database management systems and an abstract view which promotes comprehension of the CV's structure and content. After discussing the theoretical aspects of the methodology, we apply it to the MED and InterMED, two existing CVs from the medical field. A program, called the OOVR Generator, for automatically carrying out our methodology is described. Both the MED-OOVR and the InterMED-OOVR have been created using the OOVR Generator, and each exists on top of ONTOS, a commercial OODBMS. The OOVR derived from the InterMED is presently available on the Web.

TADEUS: Seamless development of task-based and user-oriented interfaces

Task-based and user-oriented user interfaces utilize knowledge about user tasks and end user characteristics to the utmost extent, They not only support end users throughout the work flows they are involved in their business, but need also to be constructed throughout a development process that allows to proceed without loss of application context and user feedback from requirements specification to code generation. The concepts behind the task analysis/design/end users systems (TADEUS) approach to enable seamless development based on end user tasks are a semantically rich representation scheme, a model-driven development procedure, a diagrammatic notation and unifying specification scheme. They are to be used for task analysis, design, and code generation. This way, interactive applications can be developed seamlessly, starting with task analysis, proceeding with design, and generating customized user interfaces for the actual task performers (users), Specifications comprise problem domain knowledge, work processes, user roles and personal profiles, as well as interaction modalities (required for task accomplishment). For user-interface prototyping the TADEUS environment contains a model interpreter that executes structure and behavior specifications. This way, early feedback on task-based portals can be provided by users. In this paper we detail the latest developments in the TADEUS project when implementing a work-process based usability life cycle. We review the underlying methodology and the features of the TADEUS environment, in order to demonstrate the benefits for developers and users resulting of smooth transition support for and between the different stages of development.

Organizing principles for the design of classification and coding software

This paper describes several organizing principles useful in designing classification and coding (C&C) software in a relational database management system (DBMS) environment. Specifically these software design principles include the usage of Operational Constructors, Meta Models, Dynamic Binding, and Associative Naming to aid the design of full-purpose classification and coding software that can take as input a classification model of part families. These principles aid the software development effort in the following ways. Operational Constructors are universal programming concepts that allow the programmer to take advantage of the graphical user interface (GUI) features of the DBMS, such as list boxes, scroll boxes, subforms, and the like. Meta models represent the structure of the classification model. By implementing any classification model as a meta model, it can easily be instantiated into the software without the need for custom development. Dynamic Binding provides a general mechanism to query the database for part information by dynamically stitching user selections to a general structured query language (SQL) query. Finally, Associative Naming allows the user to retrieve data in a general manner through an innovative table-naming scheme and traversal process. A case study is presented showing application of these principles in support of a C&C system for a purchasing application used for procurement of raw materials, electronic components, and consumable supplies.

Dynamic modeling and performance of the first cell of a multi-effect distillation plant

This paper describes a model to simulate the thermal transient behavior of the first cell of a solar-assisted multi-effect distillation (MED) plant. It has been designed according to the experience with an experimental solar thermal desalination system erected at CIEMAT-Plataforma Solar de Almeria (PSA). The non-linear first principles model has been developed using the object-oriented Modelica language. It includes two submodels corresponding to the effect and the preheater of the first cell of the MED plant. Both submodels have been calibrated and validated with experimental data. The numerical predictions show a good agreement with measured data. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

On the semantics of associations and association ends in UML

Association is one of the key concepts in UML that is intensively used in conceptual modeling. Unfortunately, in spite of the fact that this concept is very old and is inherited from other successful modeling techniques, a fully unambiguous understanding of it, especially in correlation with other newer concepts connected with association ends, such as uniqueness, still does not exist. This paper describes a problem with one widely assumed interpretation of the uniqueness of association ends, the restrictive interpretation, and proposes an alternative, the intentional interpretation. Instead of restricting the association from having duplicate links, uniqueness of an association end in the intentional interpretation modifies the way in which the association end maps an object of the opposite class to a collection of objects of the class at that association end. If the association end is unique, the collection is a set obtained by projecting the collection of all linked objects. In that sense, the uniqueness of an association end modifies the view to the objects at that end, but does not constrain the underlying object structure. This paper demonstrates how the intentional interpretation improves expressiveness of the modeling language and has some other interesting advantages. Finally, this paper gives a completely formal definition of the concepts of association and association ends, along with the related notions of uniqueness, ordering, and multiplicity. The semantics of the UML actions on associations are also defined formally.

Efficient creation of building performance simulators using automatic code generation

Building performance simulation environments are very complex software systems and the result of many person years of development and testing. The instantiation of a specific building requires additional work, depending on the quality of the user interface. We will show that with today's software engineering environments, the development time can be drastically reduced. Simulators for specific applications can be created in a few weeks and discarded after use. A prerequisite for our development method is the partitioning of the building and its installed systems into simple components that compute and interact at run-time autonomously, as in the real world. In contrast, classical building performance simulators are typically based on global systems of differential equations that model the physical reality and are numerically solved at run-time. Our approach is based on object-oriented modeling. All effects are modeled dynamically and are executed in real-time. New physical effects can be easily integrated. As calculations are triggered by value changes, very short real-time responses are achieved if necessary. Also, fast and accurate responses to external events can be guaranteed. These features are necessary for real-time tests of building automation systems. We will present data showing that our approach results in realistic simulations and show limits of real-time computations. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Decision support system for product configuration in mass customization environments

Mass customization (MC) is an emergent concept in industry intended to provide customized products or services through flexible process in high volumes and at reasonably low costs. Product customization is an important strategy for accomplishing customer satisfaction with exclusive products at reasonable prices. This paper proposes a decision support system for facilitating design and customer collaboration in the process of selecting product configuration in MC environments. The system integrates object-oriented programming, multiattribute decision analysis, and integer linear programming to support product/service customization where customer choice is managed by the relative relevance of a set of attributes as well as a set of component combinations offered by the company, and restrained by a set of technical, aesthetical, and financial constraints defined interactively by designers and customers. The integration of these models results in the representation of the MC business process taking into account simultaneously the technical, explicit, and objective view taken by designers and the customer's view based on intentions and perceptions. Using the system, the customer can define rules and provide information that can be used to represent tacit knowledge which is incorporated in an integer linear programming (ILP) model that optimizes the utility of a specific customer. As a result, the computer system is capable of implementing in an explicit, dynamic, and flexible way the cognitive process that characterizes the product configuration in MC strategy. The DSS can be considered as a concurrent engineering environment for MC production systems. A simple case study is presented that demonstrate how the program is utilized and the type of output it provides.

Hybrid system modeling using the SIMANLib and ARENALib Modelica libraries

The ARENALib and SIMANLib Modelica libraries replicate the basic functionality of the Arena simulation environment and the SIMAN language. These libraries facilitate describing discrete-event models using the Arena modeling methodology. ARENALib and SIMANLib models can be combined with other Modelica models in order to describe complex hybrid systems (i.e., combined continuous-time and discrete-event systems). The implementation and design of SIMANLib and ARENALib is discussed. The ARENALib components have been built in a modular fashion using SIMANLib. The SIMANLib components have been described as Parallel DEVS models and implemented using DEVSLib, a Modelica library previously developed by the authors to support the Parallel DEVS formalism. The use of Parallel DEVS as underlying mathematical formalism has facilitated the development and maintenance of SIMANLib. The modeling of two hybrid systems is discussed to illustrate the features and use of SIMANLib and ARENALib: firstly, a soaking-pit furnace;secondly, the malaria spread and an emergency hospital.
