A scenario-based object-oriented modeling method for algebraic specifications is proposed. The method is based on the integration of a new algebraic specification language, CafeOBJ, and a multiparadigm design notation, GILO-2 (Generic Interaction Language for objects). CafeOBJ is a successor of the algebraic specification language OBJ and supports object-oriented formal specifications based on hidden order sorted rewriting logic. GILO-2 provides collaborations as well as classes of objects to capture behavioral aspects of scenarios in object-oriented modeling. Given a problem description of the system to develop, the proposed method provides guidelines for decomposing the problem into executable CafeOBJ specification modules through scenario-based object-oriented design in GILO-2;the decomposition reflects the structure of the problem domain. The proposal also indicates how formal executable specification in CafeOBJ can be systematically obtained from the design in GILO-2.

This paper presents an object-oriented modeling (OOM) approach to model development of marine operation systems, specifically the hydraulic systems of marine cranes. Benefited from the rapid development of computation technology, many modeling and simulation techniques and software tools have proved to be very useful during the product and system development process. However, due to the increasing complexity of the physical systems, many challenges still exist regarding model flexibility, model integration, simulation accuracy, stability, and efficiency. The goal of introducing OOM to complex dynamic systems is to provide flexible, effective, and efficient models for different simulation applications. Previous work presented a virtual prototyping (VP) framework based on the functional mock-up interface (FMI) standard. The advantage of using FMI cosimulation is that modeling and simulation of stiff and strongly coupled systems can be distributed. As a result, the modeling tradeoffs between simulation accuracy and efficiency can be evaluated. The essential features of OOM and its application within dynamic operation system domain are highlighted through a case study. These features include model causality, model encapsulation, and inheritance that facilitate the decomposition and coupling of complex system models for co-simulation. The simulation results based on the proposed VP framework showed speedups in the computation efficiency at the cost of moderate accuracy loss.

A Reference-Based Parameterization Scheme for Equation-Based object-oriented modeling Languages

Abstract This paper presents a reference-based parameterization scheme for equation-based, object-oriented modeling languages such as Modelica. It is demonstrated, how simple language constructs can be designed that enable a general and powerful parameterization of models. Furthermore, the computational process required for this parameterization scheme is outlined. To validate our concepts, an experimental language has been developed and implemented. It is called Hornblower and it represents an attempt to embrace the core ideas of Modelica while reorganizing the higher-level modeling tasks that have evolved during time.

This paper discusses production scheduling problems on CNC-machines having a set of cutting tools in a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) to maximize the cutting tools utilization. This objective has been selected because it is frequently found that cutting tools are under-utilized as they are used far below their respective lifetime limits. We will consider the situation where several identical CNC-machines are operated in an FMS;each of which is equipped with the same cutting tool configuration. The jobs to be scheduled are machining parts, and each of the parts requires one to two stages of processes, and each of the stages consists of several sequential operations, where a specific operation requires a certain type of cutting tool. Whenever a certain cutting tool is being used, the time consumption will be accumulated to calculate its remaining lifetime. The assignment of an operation to a particular CNC-machine will be based on the sufficiency of the cutting tool remaining lifetime to complete the operation. We formulate the problem in a mathematical model and then solve it using a solution method based on the object-oriented modeling approach, where the FMS elements are grouped as classes of the objects, i.e. the CNC-machine, the cutting-tool, the product (job) and the storage classes. Numerical examples show that the proposed solution method can effectively solve the scheduling problem.

Convenient Model Inversion by means of object-oriented modeling for a Parallel Kinematic Robot

Abstract The paper presents the capability of object-oriented modeling languages to obtain inverse plant models almost automatically by means of Modelica and the simulation tool Dymola. Based on an available plant model in Modelica the construction of its inverse model is shown with focus on new blocks from the free Modelica Standard Library (Version 3.2). This method is applied to a model of a six degrees of freedom (DOF) parallel kinematic robot that should be implemented in a so called inverse disturbance observer (IDOB) control architecture.

Graphical variant modeling refers to a novel approach to object-oriented modeling whereby a class overrides behavior inherited from a parent class by specifying variations in the graphical description of that behavior. This approach differs from conventional approaches wherein object behavior is overridden by replacing the entire description. This paper outlines the potential benefits of graphical variant modeling. It provides a detailed description of an experimental modeler, based on a declarative block diagram language, developed as a test bench for prototyping graphical variant modeling tools and verifying the benefits of the approach in industrial modeling applications. The paper ends with some preliminary conclusions about the potential benefits of graphical variant modeling based on the development and initial usage of the experimental modeler.

The integration of absorption refrigeration equipment into Cooling, Heating and Power systems must guarantee economic viability, operability and reliability. Accurate control design is mandatory to fulfill such requirements, and make system design successful. The use of model-based control techniques and the introduction of controls testing via numerical simulation rely on the availability of accurate, robust and flexible dynamic models. In this paper, a model library of absorption systems with different working mediums and cycle configurations is presented. Library flexibility and extensibility is achieved through the adoption of object-oriented modeling techniques, allowing considerable reduction of the development time through model reuse. The library has been used to simulate the transient behavior, including startup and shutdown, of several systems. Validation against experimental data has proven the accuracy of modeling assumption. Are differential-algebraic equations the right tool for the object-oriented modeling of physical systems? One may say yes, given all the empirical evidence. However, this paper offers a brief reasoning from a fundamental information-oriented perspective. The findings suggest that there are inherent flaws concerning the computational realization of DAEs in implicit form and that extensions are needed or alternatives should be investigated.

A case study on the object-oriented framework for modeling product families with the dominant variation of the topology in the one-of-a-kind production

Traditional configuration-based product family modeling techniques do not yield favorable solutions for modeling the product families with the dominant product topology variations. This paper presents the case study for the modeling of variations of the product configuration, parameters, and topologies in mass production of custom windows and doors in a one-of-a-kind production (OKP) company. The case study is based on the object-oriented product family modeling framework we developed for OKP which is characterized by the dominant product variation by topology. The problem of variation in topology in our framework is solved by the manual model transformation in the computer-aided design module which creates a new metamodel of products with the desired topology and which is the basis for a further, automatic model transformation. Usage of our framework has a positive effect on the level of the product customizations and shortening of the leading time which helps OKP companies in obtaining a better position at the market. Our software solution for the designing and manufacturing of custom windows and doors based on our framework is implemented in more than 300 mostly small- and medium-sized enterprises. It proves our concept which can be used for the realization of the information systems for computer-aided one-of-a-kind production in the companies with a different production plan.

PestTox: An object oriented model for modeling fate and transport of pesticides in the environment and their effects on population dynamics of non-target organisms

Pesticides are toxic chemicals/products that are widely used for pest control. The most widely used type of pesticides is insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. Their continued use has been associated with undesired effects to non-target organisms thus raising environmental concerns worldwide. The problem however, is complex to integrate as there are number of processes that could contribute to the undesired effects. One of the problems is the lack of object-oriented and open source ecological tools that could be used to model the complex interaction of pesticides in the environment and their effects to non-target organisms e.g., frogs. Ecological models could save time as they could be used for management of complex interaction in the environment. The aim of the present study was therefore to add to the available literature, an ecological modeling tool that could be used to model this complex interaction of pesticides and the environment either for research or registration purposes. In this view, PestTox, which is an object-oriented and open-source model, was developed. The model is written in standard C + + language to model this complex interaction. PestTox adopted PestLCI model so that sub-models (objects) could be integrated to it. New equations for modeling washoff, photo-degradation, and pesticide-induced mortality rates were added to PestTox. The model runs on Linux, OS X, and Windows operating systems. It utilizes open source programs;Universal simulator, R, and Notepad, as such it remains open source. This model could be of interest to those involved in ecological modeling, modeling fate and transport of pesticides, data science, and management framework to evaluate potential effects of using pesticides in agricultural settings.
