Service representation for capturing and reusing design knowledge in product and service families using object-oriented concepts and an ontology

For mass customisation, companies are increasing their efforts to reduce cost and lead time when developing new products and services while satisfying individual customer needs. By sharing and reusing assets such as components, processes, information, and knowledge across a family of products and services, companies can efficiently develop a set of differentiated economic offerings by improving flexibility and responsiveness of product and service development. Based on extending the concepts from module-based product family design, this article introduces a methodology to develop a service ontology for capturing and reusing design knowledge in a service family by integrating object-oriented concepts and ontologies. object-oriented concepts provide service analysis tools for describing a business process or a workflow process in a service. A function-process matrix is used to identify the relationships between the service functions and the service processes that are offered as part of a service. In this article, a service process model is introduced to describe a service based on a sequence using a graph model. An ontology is employed to define properties that consist of attributes and behaviours for representing a service in a service hierarchy structure. We apply the proposed methodology to develop a service ontology using a case study involving a family of banking services.

This paper deals with the development of a general methodology for designing discrete-event simulators (DES) for batch plants, using object-oriented techniques. This approach was first applied to the design of a DES model for a semiconductor facility (MELISSA) and to the extension to a fine chemistry environment (AD-HOC). It is shown that the use of an object-oriented language led to a great reduction in the rewriting cost from MELISSA to AD-HOC.

In this paper, we begin by considering object-oriented programming concepts and typical novice misconceptions as identified in the literature. We then present the results of a close examination of student programs in an objects-first CS1 course, in which we find concrete evidence of students learning these concepts while also displaying some of these misconceptions. This leads to the development of two checklists that educators can use when designing or grading student programs.

In this paper, we present an approach to multimedia scenario management in a database system that considers : object-oriented concepts for multimedia and scenario modeling;both known and unknown multimedia object playing duration;temporal specification language;Petri net automatic generation based on temporal specifications;automatic detection of user temporal specification errors and contradictions;and finally user interactions based on composite Petri net features.

Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) have received a great deal of attention over the last decade. Currently there is substantial research addressing various problems in the FMS domain, including design, planning, scheduling, and control. A number of different modeling techniques have been employed to find optimal solutions to each problem in a static environment. Differences in assumptions, constraints, and solution techniques employed when tackling individual FMS problems make integration difficult. However, for effective functioning of the overall system, it becomes necessary to view them as related problems. This paper proposes an alternative framework for modeling the FMS domain, wherein problems can be tackled in an integrated manner. A comprehensive object-oriented model for FMS that covers parts, facilities, and activities is described. Explicit capture of problem interdependencies in the model permits dynamic problem solving. Procedures for addressing different FMS problems are outlined, and a detailed specification for assignment of parts to cells is provided. The model is extensible to other FMS problems. The use of an object-oriented model permits effective monitoring of system performance, thereby providing opportunities for incremental system enhancement and learning. An object-oriented knowledge-based approach for formulating applied general equilibrium models

This paper proposes and illustrates an object-oriented, knowledge-based approach to formulate Applied General Equilibrium (AGE) models. In this framework, an AGE model is viewed as a collection of structured objects from the real world such as economic agents and prices. A frame representation of major objects in AGE models for world trade is presented. This representation can be used as the structure of a model base in a loosely coupled intelligent modeling system. In such a system, constructing an AGE model appears to be an intuitive rather than an abstract process. This intuitive process needs more understanding of substance of economics and the logic underlying the problem at hand rather than mathematical notation.

In computer science, students could benefit from exposure to critical programming concepts from multiple perspectives. Peer review is one method to allow students to experience authentic uses of the concepts in a non-programming manner. In this work, we examine the use of the peer review process in early, object-oriented, computer science courses as a way to develop the reviewers' knowledge of object-oriented programming concepts, specifically Abstraction, Decomposition, and Encapsulation. To study these ideas, we used peer review exercises in two CS2 classes at local universities over the course of a semester. Using three groups (one reviewing their peers, one reviewing the instructor, and one completing small design or coding exercises), we measured the students' conceptual understanding throughout the semester with concept maps and the reviews they completed. We found that reviewing helped students learn Decomposition, especially those reviewing the instructor's programs. Overall, peer reviews are a valuable method for teaching Decomposition to CS2 students and can be used as an alternative way to learn object-oriented programming concepts.

The object-oriented knowledge representation is considered as a natural and effective approach. Nevertheless, the use of object-oriented within complex image analysis has not undergone a rapid growth as it happened in other fields. We argue that one of the major problems comes form the difficulty of conceiving a comprehensive framework for coping with the different abstraction levels and the vision task operations. With the goal to overcome such a drawback, we present a new knowledge model for medical image content analysis based on the object-oriented paradigm. The new model abstracts common properties from different types of medical images by using three attribute parts: description, component, and semantic graph, and also specifies its actions to schedule the detection procedure, properly deform the shape of model components to match the corresponding anatomies in images, select the best match candidates, and verify combination graphs from detected candidates with the semantic graph defined in the model. The performance of the proposed model has been tested on pelvis digital radiographs. Initial experimental results are encouraging.

object-oriented (O-O) data models are known for their rich semantics and modeling power for representing complex data. It is also generally agreed that O-O models can provide more functionalities and semantic constructs for modeling data in applications of geographic information systems (GIS). However, there is a lack of a complete understanding of how to apply O-O concepts in modeling GIS data. In this paper, we propose an object-oriented data model called OMEGA which is designed especially for GIS applications. We discuss in the model the use of O-O concepts in characterizing GIS applications. This model distinguishes geographic data into three major types: geometric objects, geographic objects, and relationship objects. Each of these types of objects is modeled by distinct and proprietary type hierarchies. In the core OMEGA model, there are five semantic association types: generalization, aggregation, (spatial) relationship, geographic constituent set (GCS), and selective aggregation (SA). The major enhancements that have been added to the model include (1) separating of relationships between objects from the object class and grouping of relationships of the same type into a relationship class;these classes can have aggregation as well as generalization associations;(2) a proposed unique set construct, called a geographic constituent set (GCS), especially for modeling of GIS data;and, (3) a proposed selective aggregation (SA) construct which is used to resolve overrefinement problems in a generalization hierarchy. Properties associated with these new constructs are also presented.
