A MODEL management FRAMEWORK FOR HETEROGENEOUS ALGEBRAIC MODELS - object-oriented database-management systems-APPROACH

Recently, a growing number of corporations are adopting diverse algebraic modeling languages (AMLs) to augment their productivity of developing mathematical models. As different AMLs penetrate various sections of an organization, a new challenge is faced: effective management of heterogeneous models that have been designed and developed with different modeling conventions and manipulation operations, but intended to solve similar business problems. In this paper, we propose a model management framework that can accommodate such heterogeneous algebraic models, and in so doing, can provide universal model manipulation commands. Three leading contemporary AMLs, namely, AMPL, GAMS, and SML, are employed to render a representative paradigm. The benefits of this framework are manifold, the more significant among which are the following: (1) providing a conceptual basis for uniformly incorporating dissimilar modeling conventions of different AMLs, the framework adapts the generic model concepts and provides a canonical representation for each model;(2) as the framework embodies the generic model concepts, it consolidates database, modelbase, and associated solvers in a single formalism using an object-oriented database management System (ODBMS);(3) taking advantage of the flexibility of a database query language, the framework can provide uniform model management commands to heterogeneous models represented with different AMLs, and can effectively facilitate integration of the model management system components. Also presented in this paper is a prototype model management system that has been designed following the ideas prescribed by the framework, and developed on a commercial ODBMS, objectStore, and using an object-oriented programming language, C++.

Case-based reasoning (CBR) is an Af-based technology that offers a novel problem-solving approach that relies on past situations. The basic cycle of CBR System is 'input a problem, find a relevant old situation, adapt it.' It is a rich and knowledge-intensive method that captures past experiences, enhances existing problem-solving methods, and improves the overall learning capabilities. It is also a paradigm that addresses issues of memory, learning, planning and problem-solving. It is therefore both a problem solving approach and a cognitive model of the way in which people learn and remember.

Clinical decision support systems assist in diagnosis, alert to abnormal conditions, and manage patient data. Such systems tend to emphasize one of these features at the expense of the others and tend to be developed on an ad hoc basis. In this work, a technique is developed for creating an integrated clinical decision support system wholly within a general-purpose object-oriented database management system. The diagnostic and alerting requirements are accomplished with encapsulated methods and a novel use of the object-oriented database management class-hierarchy structure. The patient data management requirement is satisfied by the normal data management capabilities of the object-oriented DBMS.

We describe the development of the data type audio in an object-oriented database management system (DBMS). The interface of the data type includes operations to store, retrieve, and manipulate audio data. Additionally, a transport protocol supports continuous recording and presentation at the users' workstations in a client-server environment. Design considerations are outlined and lead us to use no compression algorithms and to handle parametrized sample rates and sizes transparently for the user. Specific manipulation operations, such as low-pass filtering and dynamic compression, are described in detail. The implementation of an interactive audio tool shows that the data type audio can be used in the same way as conventional data types. We give an outlook on further built-in support of time-dependent media that a comprehensive multimedia DBMS should offer.

A syntax-based gateway between SQL3 and ODMG languages

object-oriented technology is an emerging information technology. object-oriented database technology represents a breakthrough from the dominant relational model. Lacking the similar popularity and acceptance of SQL. object-oriented database management systems, however, are going through a difficult period of standardization. Due the complexity of object-oriented technology and the sophistication of distributed (Internet) computing, object database systems need an efficient and effective way to tackle the issue of heterogeneity and incompatibility. In this paper, we propose a syn tax-based gateway model to bridge two key object standards of SQL3 and ODMG. The gateway model is methodological and systematic. The basic belief is that a real representation of the real world has to be discovered to resolve the middleware issue. In this method. we employ a set of general and generic components and constructs that compose a real world object system. We use the set to compare and contrast the composition of SQL3 and ODMG. We devise a limited set of conversion rules to convert the compositions one at a time. A transformation model is built. This approach is traceable and reversible because it is based on analysis/design constructs. We have implemented the gateway model. The prototype is composed of an analyzing module, lexical scanner, and grammar parser.

It is shown, in the context of an actual prototype VLSI CAD framework called Cbase, how concepts such as data abstraction, property and operation inheritance, object specialization/generalization, code reusability, and polymorphism offered by object-oriented database management systems (OODBMSs) support rapid prototyping. Parallelizing OODBMS traversals: A performance evaluation

In this paper we describe the design and implementation of ParSets, a means of exploiting parallelism in the SHORE OODBMS. We used ParSets to parallelize the graph traversal portion of the OO7 OODBMS benchmark, and present speedup and scaleup results from parallel SHORE running these traversals on a cluster of commodity workstations connected by a standard ethernet. For some OO7 traversals, SHORE achieved excellent speedup and scaleup;for other OO7 traversals, only marginal speedup and scaleup occurred. The characteristics of these traversals shed light on when the ParSet approach to parallelism can and cannot be applied to speed up an application. © Springer-Verlag 1996.

This paper describes the design and the implementation of OOPE, the graphical programming environment of the prototype version of O₂, an object-oriented database system. One of the distinguishing features of this environment is that it mixes the functionalities of programming environments, of both databases and programming languages. Thus, it facilitates and fastens not only the schema design, but also the development of application programs. Another interesting characteristic is that it is being developed using as much as possible the functionalities provided by the O₂ system, namely the programming language, the database and the graphics functionalities. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1992.

This thesis builds upon work previously done in the development of the Computer Aided Prototyping System (CAPS) and the Prototype System Language (PSDL), and presents a conceptual design for the Software Base management System (SBMS) component of CAPS. The SBMS is the most critical component of CAPS as it will coordinate the retrieval and integration of Ada software modules. A robust SBMS that enables a software system designer to successfully retrieve reusable Ada components will expedite the prototype development process and enhance designer productivity. Implementation of the conceptual design will be the basis for further work in this area. (Ada is a registered trademark of the United States Government, Ada Joint Program Office.)
