Although the use of deltas in relational environments is fairly well established, the use of deltas in an object-oriented database (OODB) environment has not yet been fully explored. As OODB's continue to expand in functionality to include the use of active rules and integrity constraints, the need for object deltas becomes more apparent. This is especially true for active, object-oriented environments that also include deductive or declarative capabilities that are typically associated with relational systems. In this paper we present an object delta structure as an integral part of the architecture of an active database system. The object delta structure represents deltas as a natural extension to database objects through object-oriented concepts such as inheritance, encapsulation and abstraction. object deltas are first-class objects that may be manipulated through a given set of behavior. The structure proposed goes beyond previous object delta definitions by representing incremental changes to arbitrarily complex data structures as part of the delta object. object deltas are represented at different levels of granularity to better support the needs of different active system functions. We describe examples of using object deltas for condition monitoring and also for effective support of run-time testing and debugging tools. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

We describe the design, implementation and user evaluation of QUIVER, a graph-based visual query language for object databases. The design goals of QUIVER include compliance to standards, comprehensive representational power, and consistency of visual representation. Compliance to standards is achieved through QUIVER queries being translated to OQL, the standard query language proposed by the object Data Management Group (ODMG). Comprehensive representational power is gained by QUIVER supporting a significant number of object database constructs, including objects, literals, attributes, relationships, structures, collections, operations, (aggregate) functions, and subqueries. Consistency of visual representation is pursued by assigning similar visual representations to constructs with similar functionality, as well as by minimising the use of text in QUIVER queries. The language is implemented as a visual front-end to the O2 object database system. Results of a user evaluation suggest that users find it easier to formulate correct queries in QUIVER than in OQL.

This paper discusses a realization of object persistence in a CORBA-based distributed system. In our approach, persistence of CORBA objects is accomplished by the integration of the ORB with an ODBMS. This approach is not limited to pure object-oriented database systems, as the ODBMS may be a combination of a relational DBMS and an object-relational mapper. The design and implementation of an object Database Adapter that integrates an ORB and an ODBMS with C++ bindings is presented. The ODA uses delegation (rather than inheritance) to connect user-provided implementation classes and IDL-generated classes. Only the user-defined parts of CORBA objects are actually stored in a database. Their IDL-generated parts are dynamically instantiated, in transient memory, by the ODA. Persistent relationships between CORBA objects within a server are not realized at the CORBA level, but at the level of implementation objects. Database traversals and queries can therefore be executed at ODBMS speeds. The paper discusses in some detail a number of implementation issues, such as caching. ODA support to local transactions, ODA interfaces, and CORBA server organization are also examined. © COOTS *** right reserved.

Engineering design is a collaborative and evolutionary process, involving designers from many disciplines. It is traditionally performed as a series of consecutive tasks, with any failures causing control to be passed back to the preceding task. If some or all of the design phases are able to be executed concurrently instead of sequentially, major improvements can be achieved. This approach is called Concurrent Engineering. This paper defines an object Versioning System to Support Collaborative Design within a Concurrent Engineering context. An initial model of this system based on a three-level hierarchical partition of the engineering database and five different version states of design artefact, was tested in a collaborative bridge design experiment. The results of the experiment showed that this model was useful, but several improvements were needed. The presented version of this system is the initial model augmented with extra functionality identified by the experiment. The implementation of this system in an OODBMS is discussed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

An active database is a database in which some operations are automatically executed when specified events happen and particular conditions are met. Several systems which support active rules in an object-oriented data model have been proposed. However, many issues related to the integration of triggers with object-oriented modeling concepts have been devoted so far limited attention and still need investigation. In this paper, we discuss the problems related to trigger inheritance and refinement in the context of the Chimera active object-oriented data model. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

The concept lattice is a conceptual model firstly introduced by Wille in formal concept analysis, a theory of concept formation derived from lattice and order theory. Various concept lattice based applications have been reported in several domains such as conceptual clustering, conceptual knowledge representation and acquisition, and information retrieval. In this paper, we propose an object database approach for managing concept lattices in these applications. The goal of our work is two-fold. First, we extend the concept lattice model by basic operations supporting concept analysis. These operations allow to search and discover data directly from the concept lattice. Then, we present an approach for modeling and querying concept lattices within an object database framework. © 1997, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.

Rule-based query optimizers are recognized as particularly valuable for extensible and object-oriented database management systems by providing a high flexibility in adapting query optimization strategies to nonstandard application needs. On the other hand rule-based optimizers are problematic with regard to run-time behavior for more complex queries as the generation of query, plans based on a declarative rule base tends to be difficult to control. In this paper we show that this is not a fundamental problem of rule-based optimizers, but rather a question of careful design of the rule system. We exemplify this for one fundamental optimization problem, namely join enumeration for linear queries. There, a rule-based optimization strategy can achieve the theoretically optimal complexity. The design principles used to achieve this have been derived from and are used in the design of the VODAK query optimizer developed at GMD-IPSI. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

We have developed a knowledge-based system which models the side chain conformations of residues in the variable domains of antibody Fv fragments. The system is written in Prolog and uses an object-oriented database of aligned antibody structures in conjunction with a side chain rotamer library. The antibody database provides 3-dimensional clusters of side chain conformations which can be copied en masse into the model structure. The object-oriented database architecture facilitates a navigational style of database access, necessary to assemble side chains clusters. Around 60% of the model is built using side chain clusters and this eliminates much of the combinatorial complexity associated with many other side chain placement Eilgorithms. Construction and placement of side chain clusters is guided by a heuristic cost function based on a simple model of side chain packing interactions. Even with a simple model, we find that a large proportion of side chain conformations are modelled accurately. We expect our approach could be used with other homologous protein families, in addition to antibodies, both to improve the quality of model structures and to give a "smart stau-t" to the side chain placement problem. Inheritance is the main theme of schema design for the object-oriented software and objectoriented database [10]. It supports class hierarchy design and capture the is-a relationship between a class and its superclass. Obviously, the designer needs tools to assist him to define his conceptual schema. However, very few approaches attempt to provide methods and tools for designing inheritance graph in object databases [29], and object software [1]. In this paper, we propose a semi-antomatic method for generating inheritance graph hierarchy. This method is semi-automatic because it takes into account the feedback of the designer based on his expertise. It has a sound mathematical foundation and allows us to obtain a number of classes less than methods which uses Gaiois Lattice as a support to generate class hierarchy. Steps of our method are : (i) From a binary relation which represents the links between classes and their properties and methods, some heuristics generate a set of Optimal Rectangles (OR: group of classes which share the same properties and methods). (ii) The set of OR is organised by a partial order relation into a Brut Inheritance Graph (BIG). (iii) BIG is simplified and shown to the designer. (iv) The designer can modify, add or remove classes, attributes or methods in the binary relation and activates steps (ii) and (iii) until he obtains a proper class hierarchy or an Optimal Inheritance Graph. © 1997, Springer Verlag. The issues of schema evolution and temporal object models are generally considered to be orthogonal and are handled independently. This is unrealistic because to properly model applications that need incremental design and experimentation (such as CAD, software design process), the evolutionary histories of the schema objects should be traceable. In this paper we propose a method for managing schema changes by exploiting the functionality of a temporal object model. The result is a uniform treatment of schema evolution and temporal support for many object database management systems applications that require both. © 1997, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.
