This paper proposes a method, called iO2, for building the inheritance graph of an 02 database schema. The iO2 method is based on the Galois lattice data structure. It encompasses three steps: a (first) construction step, a (second) optimization step, and a (final) generation step. This paper focuses on the two first steps. The construction step builds the Galois graph of the finite binary relation associating properties to entity and relationship types. A new algorithm is proposed for this first step. The optimization step builds the Galois inheritance graph from the Galois graph. A new algorithm is proposed for this second step in order to eliminate the redundancies. The generation step yields the 02 inheritance graph from the Galois inheritance graph. The transformation principles underlying this third step are given. The detailed generation algorithm is presented in [Yah96a].

Future telecommunication services will extensively exploit database technology. The persistent and temporal information needed in operations and management of the telecommunication networks and services will be in databases. The current Intelligent Network (IN) Recommendations of ITU-T imply that real-time transaction processing capabilities should be provided. Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) and Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture (TINA) are objectoriented. Current and future mobile telephone systems have their own requirements for database services. An ideal database system supporting various telecommunications applications should be a fault-tolerant distributed real-time object-oriented database system. In the research project Rodain the ultimate objective is to design and to specify a real-time object-oriented database architecture for telecommunications applications and to implement a prototype based on that architecture. The design and specification take place in 1996 while the prototype will be implemented in 1997. Copyright 1997 ACM.

Feature technique and expert system are two popular research fields in mechanical design and CAD. This paper elucidates how to adapt artificial intelligence and object-oriented thoughts to develop an information system of product design and CAD. For this purpose, it is analyzed how to build a feature library that can be called for functional modeling design of the parts and a knowledge base that is an object-oriented knowledge structure. We present a framework for making a specialized genome database interoperable with a public database. Specifically, we study how to grant users of the E. Coli genome database EcoSeq to access data remotely available from GenInfo. We extended the object Loader software tool developed by NCBI to translate ASN.1 instances to and from C++ data structures. In our prototype system, EcoSeq and GenInfo are stored in two heterogeneous object-oriented DBMS, Ontos and object/DB, respectively, each of which is designed to support persistency of C++ objects. The two databases run on different hardware platforms, one on a SUN SPARCstation and the other on a DEC workstation. Characteristics of the proposed framework are illustrated by using examples of the types of interoperation that are currently possible between the two databases. Further research issues related to enhancing the interoperation are identified.< >

In the paper, the authors attempt to extend the query model of ORION. The extension is based on adding two new features. First, is to extend relational algebra operations and set-theoretic operations to the world of classes. Second, to allow new classes to be created as a result of applying these operations on classes along the lines of relational databases. The extended query model allows a query against multiple target classes, i.e., a query that corresponds to relational join and set operations. It also enables the authors to retrieve complex objects and extracts attributes from component-type hierarchy equivalent to relational select and project operations respectively.

This Paper outlines the use of Prolog for implementing object-oriented databases (OODBs), to indicate both the benefits and costs associated with Prolog as an implementation platform. The different roles which Prolog can play in the implementation of an OODB are illustrated hy reference to example systems which, although they use Prolog as an implementation language, have significantly different architectures. These architectures are compared and assessed, both in terms of the functionality provided to users, and performance.
